James, I have questions about the clockwork template appearing in the Bestiary 3. How powerful will it be? Will it be able to be applied to animals? If it can be applied to animals, would a druid archetype that gets a clockwork animal companion be feasible from a balance point of view? For my homebrew campaign setting a clockwork druid archetype would be a thematically perfect fit, and a clockwork animal companion would round it out oh so nicely. Please tell me I'll be able to give it one and have the archetype be balanced. I want a druid with a steampunk wolf so badly you can not imagine.
There are no clockwork templates appearing in Bestiary 3. Clockworks are a whole category of monster, like "golem" or "demon." Bestiary 3 has 5 clockworks in it—one CR 1/2, one CR 2, one CR 6, one CR 12, and one CR 19. And as with golems and demons and the like... we'll do more of them periodically.

Well, you will have all the rules for the clockwork type so I can make my own clockwork animals, right?
The actual rules for clockworks are are already in print. They're on page 256 of the Inner Sea World Guide. Basically, it's a creature subtype that you can place on any construct that gives them a bunch of specific traits shared by all clockworks. It's not something that a player can really do without using the Craft Construct feat and GM permission, though... and since all clockworks are constructs, they're not animals and thus druids won't be able to gain them as companions unless you have GM approval. In fact, clockworks, being creations of synthesized technology and magic, are kind of as oppositional in my opinion as you can get from animals and natural world elements that druids are all about. A class with a clockwork companion is certainly a cool idea, though, but it'd probably be best handled as a brand new class. Or perhaps as a summoner archetype/variant that has a construct eidolon instead of an outsider eidolon. Of course... since summoner eidolons can look however you want, you can easily just build an eidolon and have it look like a clockwork wolf.

Let's keep real-world religion out of the thread, please. Especially snarky comments about it.
Sincere apologies. For what it's worth, I believe even Pope John Paul II admitted that the interpretations were a bit weird in that period, so I thought it was not controversial. It was just fresh in mind from a history course, not an attempt to start a debate.
On that note, and to make my comment less non sequitor, why is the Mendevian Crusade called a crusade? Is there any remission of sins and protection of property who those who take up the (pseudo)cross? Sins are obviously very real things in Golarion, and with the Low Templar PrC I would imagine that this kind of thing goes on... Hell is also quite objectively real, so the churches could recruit very powerful individuals who feared for their souls.
Is there a "Temple" from which the Low Templar draws its name? Perhaps a holy site consumed by the worldwound that would be of particular shame to the Crusaders?

It's called a crusade because it's a religious war against demons—an organized military campaign orchestrated by a religion (in this case, the church of Iomedae). The church needs a LOT of soldiers to fight off the demons and defeat the Worldwound, more than they have in their church, and so they do offer incentives to non-believers as a way to encourage them to help. In some cases, that would indeed include promises of pardoning sins and crimes, which a lot of not-so-scrupulous folks use as a "shield" against retaliation for some pretty reprehensible actions.
There isn't a specific temple that the low templar derives its name from—it's more a figurative temple of Iomedae that the prestige class refers to.

The idea of the archetype is a sect of druids in a high tech steampunk world who believe that technology and nature need not be opposed forces. Though they are against technology that causes too much harm to the environment, they seek to solve the issue by helping to create greener technologies, not by opposing technology in it's entirety. Due to this generally pro-technology belief, they have a mixture of technology and nature magic. The ability to summon either a normal animal companion or a clockwork animal companion (which is treated as a more powerful companion, and therefore requires a higher level druid) is part of that. If I can figure out some way to balance it, clockwork shape would be oh so awesome. Since they are druids, all this clockwork stuff is green technology :D
I think that druids who want to make technology safer for the environment instead of opposing it is an awesome idea. Of course, the good old tech hating druids still exist, but this could be a nice alternative to that.

I think people miss seeing adventures written by him.
By affording him the chance to address things in his own time without hounding him for content or taking on a weird sense of entitlement that he "owes" the information to you.
I agree that folks miss seeing adventures written by him. I certainly do. But being a publisher takes an AWFUL lot of time and energy—such that there's not a lot left over to devote to things like writing adventures. Being a Creative Director does the same, but to a lesser extent. We really do love writing content for Paizo, but doing all the other things that helps keep Paizo running on a day to day basis HAS to take priority.

That's cool. I hope I didn't come across as 'entitled', that was not my intention at all.
Will we see many dragons along with the dungeons in Shattered Star?
You didn't come across as entitled at all, but it's not a hard line to cross. The best example is how riled-up and angry fans of George R. R. Martin get at how long it takes him to release a new book—I can't help but wonder if the sense of entitlement a lot of his fans have are one of the main reasons WHY he takes so long to finish books, to be honest. Fans can often be their own worst enemies in this way.
There will be dragons in Shattered Star.

They wouldn't work. NPC classes have no class abilities to swap out, and therefore can't have archetypes.
For player characters, maybe. But for GMs, i don´t think so. They don´t need to be as big as the players archetypes, and they can change things like skills, weapon proficiences and spell lists as fit for GMs imagination.
Failed Apprentice (Adept Archetype)
Spells: Failed Apprentice casts arcane spells, even if he is unarmored he has to check a spell failure chance as if he is wearing leather armor all the time. If he got 95 or higher in the spell failure check, he gets a string of wild magic and casts his Failed Apprentice spells with +1 caster level.
Spoiled Princess (Aristocrat Archetype)
Class Skills: The Spoiled Princess loses Craft and Survival skills, but gets Stealth as class skill.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Only simples weapons, and light armor.
Royal Grace: At 5th level Spoiled princess put her cha bonus in saving and as a luck bonus do AC.
Waitress (Commoner Archetype)
Class Skills: Appraise, Escape Artist, Heal, Linguistics, Sense Motive and Perception.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: None, but recieve Catch Off-Guard as a bonus feat at 2nd level.
Magismith (Expert Archetype)
Class Skills: Appraise, Craft, Disable Device, Knowledge (Arcana, Engineering), Profession, Sense Motive, Spellcraft, Use Magic Device
Skill ranks per level 4 + int
Mastersmith Spell List: Starting at 2nd level and at even magismith level, the magismith adds a spell from this list to his Magismith class spell list (Magismith don´t learn to cast spells): Align Weapon, Bless Weapon, Chill Metal, Heat Metal, Identify, Mending, Magic Weapon, etc...
Militia (Warrior Archetype)
Alignment: Lawful only.
Class Skills: Climb , Craft , Handle Animal , Intimidate , Perception, Profession , Ride , Sense Motive, and Swim.
Skill Ranks per Level: 2 + Int modifier.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Militia is proficient in the use of all simple and martial weapons and with light armor and shields.
Defender´s Morale: Every time a militia gains a morale bonus to attack or to damage while defending their home community, he gains a +1 bonus to attack and to damage.

Will we ever see a Paizo book all about creating monsters and setting CRs? I will pay exorbitant prices.
Will we ever see rules for playing in higher or lower magic settings, such as how to adjust CRs? I will again pay exorbitant prices.
We did that. It's Appendix 1 in the Bestiary. Those are the precise rules and guidelines we follow for creating monsters and setting CRs. I even have table 1-1 from that appendix taped to my computer monitor's frame so it's always right there... I use that table THAT much.
Playing in high- or lower-magic settings would be really cool, but to a certain extent that would require a pretty significant redesign of the entire rule set. Not sure that's something we'd have the capacity to do without sacrificing a significant amount of support for the (highly successful) game we already have.

![]() |

Thanks for the answers James. I'm sorry if this is getting annoying. I've just been trying to find a way to get the game I've always wanted out of a setting that I otherwise love.
There ARE some non-evil orcs out there, but they are a distinct and significant minority—enough of one that we haven't yet said much about them because of the simple fact that we haven't said much about orcs at all.
I really, really hope we can hear more about these guys when more details about orcs are released.
Golarion is a lot... but it simply cannot be everything. And one of the things it can't be is a world where orcs are misunderstood but not evil noble savages. That's WAY too much of Warcraft's thing to poach upon, in my opinion.
Like many of Golarion's gods and faiths, Sarenrae is not a simple, one-color, one-note faith. She's the goddess of healing and redemption, yes, but she's not a goddess of peace.
Just to make sure there isn't any misunderstanding, I've never really wanted all orcs in Golarion to be misunderstood noble savage-types. Just some, so that those of us that want those orcs would have a place for them without having to go play videogames for them.
(Skryim is fun for what it is, but it's a very hollow experience if you want to actually roleplay a heroic orc, especially with a group. And WoW...could never get into the gameplay....)And I didn't mean to imply that Sarenraens should only try peaceful approaches to redemption. The way Belkzen's been set up, I'd honestly expect redemption for orcs to sadly usually start by conquering individual tribes first rather than sending missionaries on suicide missions. At least they'd be speaking a language the Belkzen orcs understood, strength and fury.

The thing is, Golarion's a big place. There's plenty of room to add new stuff in if you want. But we can't put everything into the setting. I've said this before, but you can define a setting as much as by what you DON'T do with a setting as you can by what you DO with the setting. And one way we're defining Golarion is that orcs are one of many bad guy races.
If you'd rather have good or neutral orcs in your game... that's fine. It's not something we'll really be providing is all.

Anyway, this is a bit more of a complex question, I think, but I am willing to throw it here anyway. Assuming there is a near-human race (as in, their ancestry is human) that used to worship Aroden (I like this homebrew race too much it seems) and wanted to integrate itself to all the human cultures (at least in Avistan and Casmaron), would it be right to assume the Keleshites and other more proud ethnic groups (Taldans) would simultaneously find it nice that these beings want to emulate them, but also find it bothersome when they fail to match the human "skills" in certain areas of their culture, not to mention the fact that these horned "demi-humans" are rumoured to be cursed? (Tracing back to Lamashtu and the original minotaurs from which this race "evolved")

I was just catching up on this thread and while reading a bit back about the Art Books and their not selling; I had an idea.
Say for instance you were to publish a 96 page book featuring full page art from various Paizo/Pathfinder sources, do you think it would sell better if perhaps you were to give Pathfinder stats for the focus of the picture itself, maybe on the facing page?
For instance: If one of the plates was Karzoug from the cover of the GMG, the facing page might have his stat-up as an NPC, or some detail about that blue dragon, or even just a bit about a handful of the magic items in the pic.
Whaddya think?

One more question: is it possible for someone who isn't a Paizo staffer, or personally acquainted with a Paizo staffer or with Nicholas Logue, to get hold of a digital copy of the unexpurgated "Hook Mountain Massacre?" Other posters (notably Gorbacz, IIRC) have alluded to having and even running it, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere on-line.

Having just read that whole nice reply about the Queen of Kyonin and Edasseril - were the elves spread across the whole Inner Sea Region? Any other continents?
Did they have about the same number of realms as the humans do today, or were they a more unified (as the whole evacuation before Starfall could suggest)?

HalfOrcHeavyMetal |

Actually, that's an interesting thought. A member of the direct Royal Elven Family who chose to enter a deep magical sleep in a protected vault, awakening due to adventurers meddling as the Resident Powers-That-Be of that particular region find and unearth the buried vault/ruin.
A sudden power-struggle between the 'Old Bloods' and the current rulers of Kyonin might be an interesting setting for a campaign, the blatantly anti-Human factions of Kyonin flocking around this 'Living Relic' while the current Queen tries to keep what remains of her Kingdom and people from splintering further.
And something I have been wondering, do Dragons in Golarion play their version of 'The Great Game' with/amongst Mortals, or do they prefer to stay away from the 'Lesser Races', and thus keep the thieving little rats away from their Hoards?

1)Is it safe to assume that the know direction spell would be useless in the first world?
2)I read that it is hard to get to the first world with magic so does that mean plane shift spell wouldn't work?
3)What are the plnar traits of the first world?
4)So the first world is as big as the prime material plane correct?
5)Does the First world have any planar effects that a human would need protection from, other then the changing environments?

Another magic question, if you please: Can an undead creature be (temporarily) turned into a living creature with a Polymorph Any Object spell? If so, and the now-living creature is subsequently killed, will the spell break and the end result be the undead creature, now destroyed, or will the end result be the previously living creature, now dead? How good of a diguise could this provide, for example, for a lich?

Majority OR Minority, non evil orcs isn't a direction we're really interested in taking orcs. That direction is for half-orcs, after all.
As for the other question... You could argue for or against it either way. Pick what works best for your game. If you're asking what I think is best, I've already more or less said—a non-human race regarding Aroden as their primary deity is, to me, pretty weird.
