Episode 006: Council of Thieves Vol 1: The Bastards of Erebus - with Sean K Reynolds

This episode begins our coverage of the Council of Thieves Adventure Path with our review of Part 1 – The Bastards of Erebus featuring an interview with Paizo developer and Bastards of Erebus author Sean K Reynolds. We discuss objectivity and the review process and launch a salvo in the Great Edition War. Our Character Concept is a movement and area control specialist, dubbed the Lansing Linebacker. The Monster Mash delivers conversions of the Hook Horror and the Ephemeral Swarm. We conclude the podcast, as always, with an interview with the module author and break down The Bastards of Erebus in spoilerific fashion.

Dark Archive

Nice, going to listen to it now.

Love these, your review of "Crypt of the Everflame" convinced me to pick this up and incorporate it into my campaign. Nice job!

The 'casts are getting better & better! Gotta go back and listen to the first couple but liked 006...

Just an aside though, why is it I always seem to run a type of campaign and when it ends or just doesn't pan out the little tid-bit of advice I needed pops into my world. Was running an evil campaign and it just flopped. Though listening to CoT broken down and analyzed I may just have to revisit that again.

Thanks. We're starting to find our rythym - though I think it will be another half-dozen episodes until we can shift into fourth gear and open it up to roll on down the highway...

It's like anything else in life and comes down to experience. Any podcast just takes a while to find itself.

All by way of saying, another couple of months and we'll ding fifth level :)

I hear that. Evil campaigns are really hard to do successfully, no doubt about it. I'm not even sure that Council of Thieves is the optimal choice for an "ideal" evil campaign. There are elements of it that can work, sure, but ideal? No.

I'm not sure the tag "evil" necessarily fits, but if I had to point to two analogs to a successful "evil campaign" in popular culture, I think that HBO's Sopranos and FX's Sons of Anarchy would come closest. Both are cable television series about organized crime told from the criminals' perspective (the Mafia and Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, respectively) where the "heroes" of the series are thugs and murderers when you get right down to it. Still, the shows don't completely devolve into the "party" killing one another because of their loyalty to the group and, in the case of the Sons of Anarchy, an almost pathological devotion to personal honour.

When the players can have that sense of honour and loyalty to something bigger than their own greed - it can work. Whatever the case, there needs to be some sort of shared "higher cause" involved.

Not impossible, but not easy to do. At all.

Oooh, I can't wait to pick this one up. I'm still listening to 005 (man, that's a big one!)

I've been enjoying these podcasts. They've been been very informative and insightful, both on the rules of the game and the published adventures. I know that I'll be heeding some of the advice I heard when I'll be running Crypt of the Everflame soon. I also think it's great that you've been able to get some of the Paizo staff on the cast so we can hear their insights on their own work.

It appears that itunes has a problem with the word 'bastards' and the auto-censorship that followed has prevented subscriptions from seamlessly downloading. We've tried to neuter the listing to get it moving forward, but unfortunately, itune subscribers will need to d/l manually.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah - this whole iTunes coughing a furball over the words "Bastards" in the podcast title is very annoying.

If you go to the link here for iTunes, you can trigger a manual download so that Tunes updates properly.

Sovereign Court

Good news, the iTunes link is working now!

I think you guys have officially converted me to "Fan."

Given our sound quality problems with Episode #006, I'll take that a high compliment, thank-you.

I do hope you listened to Episode #007, as the interview with Erik Mona on the Companion side of the podcast is my favorite so far.

But if you liked Council of Thieves1? You'll LOVE Episode #008. We start production on it tomorrow. ETA: Friday September 24, 2010 for Episode 008: Kingmaker 1: Stolen Land with Tim Hitchcock.

Everyone on the podcast has sunk over two months in preparation for Episode #008. I expect it will be a very long discussion on the Chronicles side of the podcast as every host on the podcast has either played Kingmaker: Stolen Land or has GM'd it. There will be no shortage of dicussions and multiple viewpoints next episode!
