Super Genius Games to manage and run subscription based website Dungeonaday.com
August 06, 2010 (SAN DIEGO, CA and MILWAUKEE, WI) – Super Genius Games announced today that it has signed an agreement with Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition designer, Monte Cook, to manage and further develop the ground breaking web portal Dungeonaday.com. Starting September 1, 2010, Super Genius Games will handle the day to day design and management of the content on the site, using plans developed by Monte Cook, and updating the content to be compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game published by Paizo Publishing.
“When Monte approached us with the offer it was initially daunting, but after talking to the other Geniuses, we knew this was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” said Stan!, Creative Director for Super Genius Games.
Monte Cook said “When it time came to step back from Dungeonaday.com I knew I needed the right partner to step in and take over. After giving it a lot of thought the Geniuses were at the top of my list.”
“Dungeonaday.com is a unique and exciting gaming product.” said Super Genius Pathfinder Development Manager Owen K.C. Stephens. “It combines outstanding traditional game content with the richness of the Web, creating an entirely new way to use a product as big and complex as the Dragon’s Delve mega-dungeon.”
Released in spring 2009, the ENnie nominated Dungeonaday.com offers a new dungeon encounter for members every weekday, building a whole dungeon campaign one day at a time. The dungeon encounters are usable in any campaign setting, and GMs can pick and choose encounters from the daily updates to use in their own dungeons or use them together with all the other information available on the site to create a massive dungeon-based campaign called Dragon's Delve. Although it may appear to start out like a fairly conventional dungeon, as you get deeper the full scope of the adventure and the unique challenges become more and more apparent. Discover the Aberrant Laboratory, the Sprawl of the Demon Liege, the Prison of the Red Saint, the Secret City, and the Court of the Dragon Prince!

Wait. Won't this arrangement have an impact (ala delay) on future SGG products (e.g, Archetypes, etc.) and any future Pathfinder Modern game?

It shouldn't impact our weekly releases, P20 Modern though... that's a maybe. Depends on what happens with stage 2.

hmmm...I'm really not sure how I feel about this. I think the world of Super Genius (I've got everything they've published except for two of their one night stands) so this is not a slam against them in any way. But Dungeon A Day is a big deal to me. I can't play right now so I get my gaming fix by reading DAD every morning - it's like an adrenalin shot to my imagination to fire up my day! While I expect the SGG guys can live up to Monte's standard (and they are some of the very few I think can) I'm still taken back a bit by Monte leaving...I guess I hope he can spend the time coming up with the Next Big Thing.

Wow, this is bittersweet news. I'm cautiously optimistic. Monte's done such a great job on DaD, that any change from him not being as involved is a negative, but if this had to pass, then SGG is a great choice, and I'm looking forward to the completion of DaD with great stewardship from the Geniuses.
Now I need to hop over to DaD and see what additional news is there.

update:
1. Yes, I (Monte) will still be involved in the site.
2. Yes, the site will continue pretty much as it has up to now. Except that it will probably get even better.
3. Yes, the content plan Monte has set out from the beginning will still be followed.

From the announcement it sounds like SGG will be converting all of the content to PRPG.
Does that refer to all of the current content? Or simply the content going forward? If the former, where will you start (e.g. the first content going forwards, or the current content going backwards)?
In other words, what is the plan for conversion?
Thanks!

What's stage two? *bites nails*

What is Monte's reason for stepping away from dungeon a day?
I think it is less of a "stepping away" and more of a "growing the site beyond a one man operation."
Monte doesn't have time to convert the existing levels to Pathfinder. SGG can step in and provide Pathfinder stats (without taking away our existing 3.5 stats).
Monte doesn't have time to chase every little typo. SGG can step in and keep the site's quality high.
Monte doesn't have time to do the boring website maintenance stuff. SGG can assist in the administrative duties.
This leaves Monte more free time to write amazing encounters and develop other projects.
I see it as a win for everyone. Hopefully the PDF compilations will start coming out more often.

Actually, whenever a member catches a typo, from grammatical to game mechanics, he updates the relevant encounter within a day or two. He does an awesome job with that!

The plan is to provide pathfinder conversions for everything, eventually. We're going to start by having both 3.5 and Pathfinder versions of all new content. I also plan to go back to the beginning of the dungeon, and provide Pathfinder content for everything, as time allows.

Honestly, we're not sure yet. We're very focused on stage 1, which is to make sure things go forward smoothly with the content already planned out. We have lots of ideas for stage 2, but we need to make this current arrangement functional before we look to add anything.

One of the things Monte showed us when we were in talks to come aboard was how easy it is to fix mistakes on the site. And as much as I'd like to claim otherwise, I'm sure we'll make some mistakes. But DaD is even easier to fix than a pdf, and we have access to all the tools needed to do that. We actually found a typo while we were first talking to Monte, and he corrected it then-and-there, which was kind of cool.

Yes, I know he has done a wonderful job on the site (I'm a charter member). I'm just saying that correcting mistakes pointed on the board could easily be done by another staffer, leaving him more free time to work on creative portions of the site.

I'm not really super familiar with Dungeon a Day (although I certainly am aware of it!) but this is starting to sound cooler and cooler!
If you like dungeons or any adventure Monte Cook has ever written, it is great. Well worth checking out. You could run a campaign for years on the material already written. It's also modular enough to easily steal ideas and encounters from.

Chicken. :P
I see your tongue planted firmly in your cheek, Steve. :D
But in all seriousness, of COURSE I hesitate to adapt ANYTHING of Monte's, regardless of size or scope. I've sat next to the man, I know how good he is, and I am aware of the faith and interest people have in products just because he worked on them. Anyone who doesn't hesitate to take on his legacy in any game-related department isn't taking that legacy seriously enough.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't DO a conversion of Ptolus, if Monte asked me to. But honestly, there's no reason he would. The genius of that book transcends game system. It's greatest contribution is to a GM's house of ideas, and for that 90% of it is fine as is, and 90% of Ptolus is a lot of pages of useful stuff!

Owen, I already have respect in you for the work you have done, but what you just said increases that respect at least twofold.
