Why Would You EVER Take Sharp Senses?

Sharp Senses (from the new APG) requires you to be a member of a very narrow range of races. It gives you +2 Perception and nothing else.

Skill Focus (Perception) is a better feat in every way, and is available to anyone.

Alertness is a better feat in every way, and is available to anyone.

Even Additional Traits will almost be a better feat in every way, for many characters.

Who is this feat designed for? I don't get it. Was this just filler material?

Is it a pre-req for other better feats?

Uh sharp sences gives you a +4 bonus to perception checks

Edit ah I see what you mean now

Sharp Senses
Your senses are especially sharp, even for your kind.
Prerequisite: Keen senses racial trait.
Benefit: You receive a +4 racial bonus on Perception
skill checks. This replaces the normal bonus from the
keen senses racial trait.
Normal: The keen senses trait normally grants a +2
racial bonus on Perception skill checks.

Personally I think it would make more sense if it stacked with the trait

Not that I've seen, but the only thing I could really see this feat for is squeezing an extra +2 into your Perception skill, above and beyond the feats already available.

Perhaps having a high Perception is part of the character concept a player is shooting for. Also, it stacks with Skill Focus (Perception) and Alertness.

Is there anything that prevents it from stacking with the other mentioned feats?

It's a racial bonus and thus doesn't stack with its pre-requisite +2 racial bonus to perception.

The only point of this feat is if you're playing a truly perception-obsessed character, though it would make a nice pre-requisite for better feats based on perception (like a 5-10ft blindsense).

I don't think so. Sharp Senses confers a racial bonus, while SF(Perception) and Alertness are both untyped. It should all stack nicely.

Yup. The reason to take it is you already have the two other feats and want more. Makes the races with sharp senses have the option of being 4 points better in total then any other normal race.

If you want to go feat crazy it would look like this for a level 10 character. I could see a half elf rogue going for this as they would only have to pay two of the feats.

Perception
10 Ranks
+4 Alertness
+6 Skill Focus
+4 Sharp Senses
+? Wis Mod

So that would be D20+24+Wis Mod. A pretty safe bet you would not miss much. Throw in trapfinding for a rogue and you have a very good chance to never miss a trap again.

You forgot the "class skill" bonus and a trait bonus (I presume there's a trait that gives a +1 and makes it a class skill, there is for most/all of the skills).

That puts it to D20 + 28 + Wis Mod. This makes it impossible to miss most (non-magical) traps, and very difficult to miss the rest. By 20th level you have D20+38+Wis Mod. Make that a casting cleric or a monk and you have someone that never fails a perception check. They could notice an invisible stealthing panther while asleep. Hell, they probably gain scent 5-15ft just from their perception mod.

Hmmm... while I like versatility (read: roleplaying/flavour traits and feats), this *is* actually an inferior choice and I wonder why it was included in the book.

I wish most alternative racial traits and feats would have worked along the lines of "You can reroll X once per day, and receive +1/+2 to this roll" (e.g. 'Elven Accuracy', although you don't get a bonus for that). However, I'll reserve my final judgement on traits and feats until I've got and read the book (by next monday, if my FLGS receives the shipment on time).
