You're right about corn. If 'corn' is listed as one of the top three items when you're buying dog food for your canine, put the thing back down. Pricey are the options remaining, but you'll be doing by your pet better for its healthy and quality consumption. My lil woman has gotten me on that kick recently.

It may have the Rachael Ray name attached to it, but Nourish is worth checking out.

I know these are fighting words, but the Carl's Jr/Hardees' Monster Burger is tastier.

Don't have any in the area, otherwise I'd give them a shot. Which reminds me, I've been meaning to check out Five Guys now that they have a couple of them recently pop up in my neck of the woods.

I remember when I had an IQ of 271. Of course I remember it really, really well, too, cuz I'm so damn smart.

Corn isn't just in 'way too many products', it is in virtually ALL processed foods (like of 99% of them) because virtually all food additives and preservatives are derived from corn.

I'm allergic to corn. As far as my immune system is concerned, 99% of the food in an American supermarket is toxic to me.

yellowdingo wrote:

If you think rice doesn't make people fat you need to come up here 'dango, and check the BFI of modern Chinese. It ain't what it used to be here.

Wow...another place thousands of miles away to have wrong opinions about.

I was at the beach yesterday.

Wow. I've been in Weihai, Shandong for 8 years and in that time the people have literally ballooned. It's crazy. Rice, fatty pork, massive amounts of peanut oil in everything... yikes.

+1. I find the broad support for farm subsidies baffling, especially given all of our free market talk.

Its all a plot I say...McDonalds wants you to believe there is enough beef.

Heck, Derek, you can throw a rock with your eyes closed and hit a Texas BBQ place. When that's the case, why would you EVER eat at McDonalds?

Chances are everyone could chunk a rock at a better source of food (grocery store + own kitchen, local restaurant, backyard). Folks not wanting to is just a cultural trend.

I can recommend Newman's Own dry cat food too. I started my cat on it when I first thought she had corn allergies (she didn't). The only problem was that as a Main Coon (a large breed), the nuggets were small enough she could swallow them whole without chewing. It didn't seem to bother her though.

Because it doesn't use corn as a filler, she usually ate less, which meant less to clean out of the litter box. And corn is tougher on certain breeds' digestive organs (like Maine Coons). /tangent continued

Well, yeah. Especially as blessed as we are down here in Texas. Plenty of all kinds of bad ass stuff to eat.

Oh, have you been to Madras Pavilion on Kirby yet? Awesome vegetarian South Indian food. Next time you make it down this way we have to go, if you haven't been yet.

Good restaurants always have cool anecdotes about the founder/owner. Get on those lightning bolts and whales! We must conquer the world with sweet brisket!

I miss Texas BBQ. I like Diane's Florida style sauce on pork, but I miss that slow smoked Texas beef brisket and beef ribs.

I'm glad I'm a vegetarian.

Dueling pianos still seem to be popular (aren't they? I don't get out much.)... maybe a restaurant with dueling BBQ?

I do not have an issue with many subsidies. I have a problem with most beef subsidies. I live in a state where people would go hungry and loose homes with out some subsidies.

MMMM BBQ brisket. Here in Central PA, our local cuisine consists of saurkraut and pierogies.

It probably has more to do with the increase of fried food and sugar intake than on rice itself.

Maybe outside of the states, I am less inclined to buy American Beef after reading the article.

This is also true.

We (Americans) do need to nudge our agriculture industry back toward healthier and more humane practices.

Well then we need to stop subsidizing them, unless the choose healthy practices and do it over the course of a few years. Say 5. that way they have a chance to change and know that it is hinged on them doing the right thing. Of course if it was all up to me, the subsidies would stop in about 10 years.
Not just that though. The American consumer would need to get used to the idea that the price he/she pays for meat would double (or more).

Which would probably be good for most of us. We eat far to much meat in general.

I think it all of the above. Meat, sugar, rice (& other carbs, they've got more and more bread here... it's just energy), and oil. They're quickly getting richer and fatter.

Consider than corn subsidy IS a beef subsidy. Why do you think most American beef is corn fed? (& profoundly f#%!ed up because the bovine digestive tract is not designed for it)
