As a gay man there's a particular rumor I've heard about the navy and I'm wondering if you can confirm it? :PI'm beginning to get the feeling that talking too much on Facebook (or anywhere else online) about politics/religion/other "controversial" topic lessens my enjoyment of the site involved? I know and actually like so many people with different social viewpoints, but it's frustrating to see so many of them spouting off.
I suppose I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't a blatant reminder that, were it not for a common interest in RPGs or some other connection, I probably would not be friends with them.
Of course, I usually feel this way when I see them involved in heated posts on something about which they know very little or are badly misinformed, at the very least...just because you're smart, it doesn't mean you have all the facts. (And if you argue vehemently without a firm grasp of the facts, you're essentially arguing from a faith-based position...boy, wouldn't that idea make some people mad?)
Anyway...it just makes me sad to see so many of my friends on both ends of the spectrum going off like that. It really makes me worry about the world my children will grow up to be part of. There is no world in which a single person or ideology is totally right. Failure to admit that another person's viewpoint may have some merit is the ultimate in hubris.
How can I teach my children to listen, think, and act with kindness, generosity, and compassion when such behavior begins to fade in even the closest of circles?
