From the description:

"The attacking creature can only push the opponent in a straight line, and the opponent can't move closer to the attacking creature than the square it started in."

What does that part about the opponent being unable to move closer mean exactly?

It means the creature that is making the Awesome Blow attack chooses a straight line that starts in the opponent's square and can go in any direction UNLESS the direction chosen moves the victim closer to the attacker.

In other words, he is hitting his target so hard that the target goes stumbling/staggering/flying/reeling away from the impact - that can be sideways, straight back, or somewhere in between, but he can't hit the creature on its "opposite" side to knock that creature toward him.

It's one of my favorite tricks, but damnably, I still have't found the way to use Awesome Blow to flick those yummy humans into my armored maw. However, I am working on teaching myself a new feat to use my tail to swat tasty morsels into the air where I can gulp them down. Maybe one day I'll perfect it; since we Tarrasques live forever, we gotta find something to entertain us...

This means that you cannot "pull" someone towards yourself with the attack. It is especially necessary for those of large size or with reach weapons.
