Commune- how to best use

situation was we have dream. i do divination and find greatest threat is" beast". than pay for commune and ask if B is outsider, elemental. aberation(yes). than drop the ball, because cant think where to go next. So wanting to know how others handle this spell and others like divanation to get the most out of? both sides of screen would be helpful for our game since dont think gm has used much either and i plan on using alot of them.


First of all, I do limit those spells to limited use, once per month typically, though I also allow commune to be used as an identify spell.

As a DM I prepare for it, preparing cryptic hints or yes / no / maybe answers, sometimes riddles, or visions, allowing for more research.. typically it is an aid to guide them to the next step of the adventure, realize that you are bothering higher powers (the GM) so it should prolly be a last resort.

im in 2 adventure paths LOF and COT and got tpked out of RORL early. and from what i can tell they dont seem to take that much time, so a month per AP book.

was just looking at oracle(lore and heavenly) inwhich get power of once a day. would you change this in your game than to once a month?


As a group, formulate a series of questions ahead of time that function as boolean logic, so depending on the answer if the first question, you'll have two different questions to ask next, etc.

Also, keep the questions broad enough to allow for multiple scenarios (not "Is NPC going to steal the sword" but "Is NPC going to betray the group", but also specific enough, for example NPC A, not any NPC.
