I do a lot of research, and often I'll read thousands and thousands of words just for a few sentences worth of valuable information. Over the years I've become quite good at skimming text and finding the relevant bits without really focusing on the "noise". I do the same thing here, so I guess I have an internal, real-time ignore function in my brain.

Edit: If the desire for an ignore function is driven for the ease of finding relevant information and not for some spiteful "idon'twannaseethatguy" reasons, I suggest we institute a non-wall of text function. Or at least force people to break their posts up into paragraphs and use punctuation, because that kinda thing slows me down more than anything when I'm trying to find useful information on the threads. :)

You ignored it! and without a button!

I'm so proud.

You are officially my new pal.

Yes. But....

Actually, maybe 99% true.

Here's why.

I've noticed that pretty much damn near most all the time, the guy you need the ingore function for?
He'll be gone in 6 months or less.

Hmmm......wonder why that is?

Ok, first some one tell Mr. Fishy is Troll score...

Second if the people on the internet offend you you then maybe you shouldn't be here. Mr. Fishy is a CARTOON FISH that speaks in the third person, if he does some thimg to upset you you have two choices.

1. GET THE HELL OVER IT, you got your dander up over a cartoon fish. What are you three, GROW UP.

2. Ignore Mr. Fishy's post by...this is going to blow your mind...not reading it. If you read Mr. Fishy post you are pay him homage if you respond you are glorifing him.

If you hate some thing kill it or ignore it to do otherwise is to glorify it.

Mr. Fishy would prefer a summary feature for very long post. You know who you are. As for the silly post and Avatars Mr. Fishy can only say.

TIER FISHY AIR BREATHERS!!!

Yeah he's part of your set, its already been established that you have your camp and Teter does nothing to dissuade the derails you guys laugh about in FAWTL ....

But I don't care what Spanky is doing - what he said was true, hence the "this" part.

Keep up the insults though, I think it helps build a good rep for this company and how they run their boards.

You're really bad at this ignore thing, aren't you? No wonder you want a button.

Look, it's cute that you've got a bad case of sour grapes about not being part of the in-crowd. Really, I like the bitterness, and think it adds a level of persuasiveness to posts that might otherwise come off as whiney and pathetic. But it's not like the in-crowd is an exclusive affair. Just get off your high horse and come have a virtual drink with us.

Or, you can keep crying about how there are people here who are friends and make jokes and they should stop that because you're not part of the group. I'm sure these forums would be a better place if only the Paizo staff would help you stomp all the fun out of us.

Also, a disclaimer for any centaurs that might be reading the boards:

Edit: Oooh, and Smurfette ftw.

Why did I bail off of all those forums that didn't get me and my antics?
Why didn't I just....insist that they changed their ways? They all were wrong. Not me. I'm such a loser.

Glorious Troll Nation has recorded a score of 437.6 Troll Points for Mr. Fishy. This score awards the rank of Demigod of Trolldom. Points break down as follows:

3 points = Content of posts
.6 points = Cartoon Fish Avatar
434 points = Unfailing reference to self in third person

Obvious Troll boasts a Troll Score of 250, and Obvious Troll is a freaking TROLL, to give Mr. Fishy some type of frame of reference.

Smurfing has never really made me unable to pick out useful information (although, at the point a thread is smurfed, there is likely no useful information) or the ongoing debate (often just two groups of people yelling at each other and not making any headway).

I would attribute part of this to the fact that a typical "smurfing" post is very brief while a "on-topic" post are many times larger, packed with words, and hard to read through. I might take a minute to read the ten smurf posts on a page, but two minutes to read the on topic post.

=

As for an ignore function, it isn't really come as useful for myself. I have used ignore functions in the past. Whenever I did it, ignoring someone was less to not have to read their posts, because I could do that already by scrolling, and more to have some sort of irrefutable victory over them.

Posting incessant, insane complaining about a company's product? IGNORED! On several occasions describe some group of gamers as idiots/sheep/etc for following some company? IGNORED!

With an ignore fuction I felt like I was more in control of moderation of the forums rather than just flagging something and wondering why a moderator didn't do something about it.

But it was never a way to keep a thread clear of "junk," because that poster still was posting and other posters keep responding to him/her leaving me with the same problem as before, that I have to scroll past junk that I don't want to read. That, or I just ignore that poster and everyone that talks/argues with them, which I believe would be more likely to get rid of all the posts in a forum than it is to present you with just the good information and reasonable discussion.

I believe that, rather than ignoring, it is better to just learn how to scroll past posts that you know you don't want to read along with flagging posters that are being inappropriate instead of getting one's self drawn into an firey arguement with them.

I'm not sure if the fact that I just minimized the Off-Topic forum to remove a single thread* from my view hinders my argument or not.

*Although there are certainly more threads there that I don't care for.

Not to mention that bitterness, when properly harvested, is an excellent ingredient in cooking. I like to put some in my milk at night - helps me sleep.

So aside from the fact that Paizo doesn't want to alienate the large number (not as a percentage mind you) of marginally literate folks who buy their product this is likely to alienate the English as a second language folks. I often find myself wondering "Is this guy a foreigner or just someone who is too lazy to post intelligently?" I love the fact that this is an international community and wouldn't want to see the folks who struggle with English driven off.

Then there is the fact that Paizo staffers likely get entirely too many posts flagged with my name on them already.

And I know your post was in jest...

I find that the ESL (or ETL, EFL...) people here have no trouble with English.

It's the ones with it as their first language who do.... ;)

(In seriousness though, I don't think I've ever found a post from someone from a non-English speaking country to be unclear. And ESL speakers tend to avoid common "textspeak" and leetspeak abbreviations, which is what I find makes posts most illegible.)

@another_mage: I didn't know what you meant about the code lagging a page load or two behind but I get it now. Upon refresh it works :)

Great stuff, now to see about getting past that "bug". If it helps any, we have a few scripts in the collaborator forum on the site with similar functionality (and which may have clues to getting past the refresh/reload issue)

I just generated a full blown topic map (1400+), and the browser comes back with the unresponsive script dialog.

Looks like I need to throw in an optimization or two. I think pre-qualifing the search terms on a per-post basis should work.

Well, like I said, not sure if there's anything usable or not but we have a couple Greasemonkey scripts on the collab boards you could look at. Maybe there's something plunder-able, who knows?
