Still, I wouldn't mind the ability to ignore at least the blue people posts. In some threads, that would clear up half or more of the replies.

Okay, that last post makes me think that, for all my posting about the word "S----," I didn't know what I was talking about. I just looked up "S----ing" in the wikipedia, and read three definitions of it, and none of those definitions fit. What does it mean here?

Also, I'm aware that what I'm about to say runs counter to the point I've been trying to make on this thread, but...

Are you sure that's a good idea? There are only so many avatars, and they're all used by multiple people.

For instance, there was once a user here - I won't mention the name - who, well-educated though he was, was infamous for trolling. That user eventually left, but every time I see someone, such as zylphryx, post here using that avatar, I instinctively think "Oh no, not HIM again!" I immediately realize that it's NOT him, of course, but I've been conditioned. Maybe training yourself by avatar might not be such a good idea.

Yeah, it's a little more difficult to train yourself to skip names, but it can be done. So the real problem is, why aren't you reading the messageboard more often to fine hone these skills, Jreyst? You should start with my meditations on Gygaxian Naturalism, and choose one of my respondents* to practice ignoring as you read through the thread.

*Just kidding, respondents. You had some great (wrong) replies.

Someone mentioned previously the idea of creating a Greasemonkey script to do this. Does anyone know enough about GM to attempt something like that? I'd even throw some $ into a Paypal account if someone were to develop such a script. I have another script I'd like developed that I'd also pay $ for if anyone were so inclined.

I guess I've been lucky here. The two or three posters I ignore here have avvies that seem to be infrequently used. I'm only aware of one person I want to read who shares an avatar with one of these people, and that's why after training myself by image, I started to add the name in to see if I could train myself to do that quickly.

I'm not ignoring you, but every time I read your avatar name, it registers as "Dr. Double D's". Then, I see the bearded dude avatar and feel ripped off.

to SMURF, v. trans. & intrans.

21st Century.

The purposeful activation of the Smurf code on the Paizo messageboard by many posters for multiple posts for either benevolent social control or mutual goofy amusement. Especially the persistent and programmatic action of the same. Back-formation of the noun, smurf, from the eponymous children's cartoon.

Perfect example of what we were discussing. Imagine this being an on topic post with useful information. If you are able to pick it out, in the two pages of crap that you had to go to then you have more time and patience then me. I am posting this as an example, mostly I would have just moved on no matter what the original thread was or how interested in the topic I may have been.

For people who are worried that a feature may allow me to ignore thier posts, well, the kind of posting seen here would have made me ignore all of the posts in the thread, if this wasn't a good place to make a point. If anyone actually reads this in the mess.

Ya know, I rarely, if ever, play any type of seniority card because, well, it's pretty stupid and meaningless and there is no correlation between the value of what someone has to say and how long they've been posting here at Paizo.

But, when it comes to whinging about off-topic posts, and smfing, and the general silliness of the Paizo regulars, all I've got to say is we were here first, we established a culture we liked, and that's the way it currently is.

Good luck changing it by trying to get the mods to crack down on us. I suspect they like the silliness we cultivate at its present (fairly reasonable) levels. Yes, it may deny you the chance to have that oh-so-important 10 page thread about why killing puppies is not a lawful good act or why we should kill whales for jesus, but somehow I suspect you will survive.

And, if not, I'd like to note that there are literally millions of other online communities out there, maybe one of which you may find more to your taste.

Me? I like Paizo the way it is. I like the smfs, I like the silly asides and funny avatars, I like coming to this virtual Cheers and having a good time with my drinking buddies. You're more than welcome to pull up a stool, but don't expect us to change to accomodate whatever you think is appropriate and proper in an online community.

Berate me if you like, gang, but I don't see anything wrong with an ignore function. It won't be terribly effective on individual posters because of quote inclusions and because some people alternate between dead serious and utterly goofy posts, but that choice would be up to the ignorers. Is it worth the effort? That's for Gary to say. <shrug>

I'd like one too, frankly.

I asted for one, though, a while ago, and Gary or Vic or somebody said, "survey says......."X" JUST like famly fude.
So,.......
ask again, so he can go survey says,......"XX."
Then maybe your crazy Uncle Floyd who hears pretty well but just doesn't interact with the rest of us can ask for one.

"X." "X." "X."
No new car.
No trip to the Bikiny Islands.
Just
"X." "X." "X."

I agree, I usually like it too. The silliness is not so bad as the three poople arguing over who can twist the same sentence the best to show it represent thier view, but there is also a time when a thread has a good and valid discussion going and it gets crapped in by people just looking to get attention for themselves. There is a time for silliness and a time for real talk, and yea, I may not have been here as long, but I should get to decide when I want to have a real discussion. Again, no one is asking anyone to change. The whole point of this thread is to allow a person to pick what he reads. If someone ignores you, you can still be silly with your friends and no one gets hurt.

It's the Internet. One skill I've learned (offline, sitting through conference calls) is how to selectively block out or skim through the "noise" to get through to the nuggets of useful info. Does anyone really have that much trouble quickly skipping over the non-useful stuff in a thread? Even in threads that manage to stay ontopic, not every single post is golden; I'm sure people just skip past the ones that aren't helpful.

And sometimes we all (myself definitely included) can take our own opinions on a topic or ourselves too seriously. It's nice to be able to defuse the situation with a little humor; if two disagreeing people can find common ground in a joke, it reminds them they have more in common than not.

Edit: and Smurf!
