Caster ’s Shield
Aura moderate abjuration; CL 6th
Slot shield; Price 3,153 gp (plus the value of the scroll spell if one is currently scribed); Weight 5 lbs.
Description
This +1 light wooden shield has a leather strip on the back on which a
spellcaster can scribe a single spell as on a scroll. A spell so scribed requires half the normal cost in raw materials. The strip cannot accommodate spells of higher than 3rd level. The strip is reusable.
A random caster’s shield has a 50% chance of having a single
medium scroll spell on it. The spell is divine (01–80 on d%) or arcane
(81–100). A caster’s shield has a 5% arcane spell failure chance.
Construction
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Scribe Scroll, creator
must be at least 6th level; Cost 1,653 gp

Since Scribe Scroll isn't available to PFS characters, does that mean any Caster's Shields found are one-use only (for the scroll part, obviously)? Or should it be treated like a Spell Storing weapon, somewhat?

Have you seen this in a scenario?

Well, no, I haven't. But isn't it available once you have enough PA to afford the 3,153gp?

Liberty's Edge 1/5

I don't see why it wouldn't be, it's in the Core Rulebook, right?

There is no scribe scroll feat for Pathfinder Society, so this item is effectively not legal for play.

I was afraid of that. Perhaps this item needs to be explicitly excluded in the Guide then?

I'll call it out in v2.3.

Can't it just be left in as a really over priced one-time spell +1 shield? (Which is what it effectively is in OP.)

You'd be much better off buying a +1 shield and about 75 1st level scrolls :)

It wouldn't be a one time use as the user has to scribe a scroll on the shield.

Just like Spell Storing weapons, some Caster's Shields come with a spell already scribed, so it'd be an overpriced one-shot.

It has a chance of having up to a 3rd level spell already scribed on it when found, and as Josh has said, these won't be found in a PFS game. However, when bought in a store you would know in advance whether it had a spell already on it or not. Buying one with a 1st level spell on it would only raise the price a little, but adding the cost of either a 2nd or 3rd level spell to it would make the shield not worth the cost, especially since there are much better things to buy with the limited gold you get in PFS.

Edit: I just decided to look at prices and remembered wrong on the costs for 2nd and 3rd level scrolls, but still is a shield with a one-shot fireball scribed on it worth 3500 gold in the PFS economy?

Its on the cert for a mod I played.

Necro!

Is there any chance of getting a clarification on how this shield works in PFS?

I'd really like to have a usable Breath of Life scroll (by having the greater shield in hand,) even if I have to pay full price for the scroll.

Caster's Shield

Caster's Shield, Greater

It's just a shield with a scroll stapled to the back. You pay 3,153 gp (or 10,153 gp for the Greater version) plus the cost of the scroll you want to add (1,125 gp for a scroll of Breath of Life).

Judging by the cost breakdown, these shields are otherwise normal, save for a 1,000gp markup for having brackets on the backside.
