Starting LoF with mid-level PCs?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I'm running a Mystara-based PFRPG campaign and the PCs are roughly 9th level. I've been reading the Sagiro Story Hour over at EN World and I love the alternate-Prime Material Plane story arc and I thought of bringing it to my campaign. This, when coupled with one of my player's great love of all things Egyptian/Arabian, makes me wonder about running the PCs through Legacy of Fire. I understand that the AP is supposed to start with 1st level PCs, and that the higher level PCs are going to breeze through the early stuff. But I'm a firm believer that sometimes it can be fun to annihilate the low-CR fodder. After all, what is the point of being high-level if you always face level-appropriate challenges?

What do you think? Should I scale up the encounters? Should I let the AP ride as it is written?

From the parts I ave played...I just hit 9th level and the 3rd or 4th book.

The adventures have been great, but some..maybe most of the encounters will not convert to higher level adventures very well. I would choose a couple encounters from each book...likely the BBEGs...bump them up in level and then skip to the latter books.

I am currently running LOF and just started the 3rd mod - Jackals price which takes the PCs from levels 7-9.

Level 9 characters will have a cake walk through most of the first three mods.

I am running 5 characters with an animal companion and have had to scale up the combats to keep them challenging.

adventure spoiler:

If would recommend scaling up the combats to make some kind of challenge, possibly doubling the number of guys and giving them the advanced template. A few fireballs will still be really deadly though. You pcs should be able to clear the gnolls out Kelmarane pretty quickly, The House of the Beast encounters will also need to be scaled as well, more gnolls. One main issue is with the 3rd mod as the pcs can circumvent many encounters and much of the story if they have teleport capability.

A lot of it depends on whether your pcs are ok with some cake walk encounters. you could probably fast forward through the first couple of mods by just having one of two big combats for Kelmarane, ( I would have the pugwanpis from the monastery join the gnolls to make things a bit harder for the pcs and give the pcs an appreciation of the pugwampis). You could then have a few encounters at the House of the beast, to set up the AP story and background but not have the pcs spend too much time cake walking.

To make the 3rd mod work you could add some special rule to the scroll to prevent it from travelling via teleport, a side effect of it being damaged, or possibly theft prevention created by Nex.

Once you get to the 4th you should be in line with level appropriate encounters.

One issue is how many levels will the PCs gain before reaching the appropriately leveled mod- #4 is levels 9-11.

I think it would be doable, but would need a fair bit of customization by you.

Good luck, tells us how it works.

Let it ride as written, maybe bump up a few encounters to make them feel threatened, but if your party doesn't mind slaughtering low CRs then go for it.
