Animal would be a creature's type, not subtype. In the case of the giant crab, it is a vermin type creature with the aquatic subtype, so while it would be considered a member of the animal kingdom in the real world, it is not considered an animal for the purposes of game rules.

Yes, vermin aren't animals. They're disgusting, well, vermin, and need to be obliterated. Except butterflies, maybe. Don't want to get on Desna's bad side. And wasps can stay to, because I definitely don't want to get on Calistria's bad side (although I would if you alter the last couple of words in that sentence, mostly in spelling, as the pronunciation is pretty much right already).
