D&D is a threat to the wellbeing of the State

If D&D represents a place for the mind, assailed on all sides by the wolves of the uncivilized world, to retreat, and encase itself in a shield of distracting, pleasant things, then is it not a fantasy, that must be fought against, for it is irresponsible to consider retreat in the face of the wolves who can only ravage the state in our foolish absence, and to encourage retreat tantamount to treason?

Silver Crusade

You tell me. You're on an RPG forum, after all.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, YD, I'm pretty bored right now, too.

If this is so, are not ...

  • Alcohol? (or Cigarettes/Drugs)
  • Sports? (Not Fitness, but Sports as entertainment).
  • Theatre? (or Movies/Television)

... also treason in the same manner. All of them allow for a more of mental retreat from the world into a shield of distracting, pleasent things.

  • Wow. You make D&D sound really sweet. I'll have it in PRPG flavor.

  • Or religion, the "opiate of the masses" (according to Karl Marx)? :-)

Not really. Religion is a tool for social control, so it is beneficial to the state.

  • Actually from some of his past posts, I believe that YellowDingo does believe that they are treason.

Some of those I can see:

  • Role-Playing Game: (at its best) Encourages creative thinking.
  • Theatre: (at its best) A tool for provoking thought and spreading "truth".
I can definitely see where both of these would be problems for a well-ordered society.

  • What if we're all on a giant 20 sided dice rolling on a huge table in a basement in another unimaginable huge universe? Wow, man . . .

Yeah, and confound that devilish rock & roll too! And tell those kids to GET OFF MY YARD!

Let's just childproof children and lock them away until adulthood while we are at it.

    There is no crit.

... patiently waits for Dingo to mention string theory, and claim it supercedes the state, and religion, and all gaming...

I was studying string theory, but then my wife clipped the string off my shirt. :)

    meh.....bread and circuses.

It seems to me that your question assumes that D&D players are somehow more inherently able to deal with the aforementioned wolves than others. Given that metaphorical wolves are in a habit of tearing to pieces anything that they come across irrespective of private pastimes, I return to you the questions:

    1) Is it treasonous to not fight a battle that it is only possible to lose:
    a) If someone with authority has ordered you to fight that battle?
    b) If nobody with authority has ordered you to fight that battle?
For the sake of simplicity, let us assume that oaths sworn or legal contracts signed which might require such action are implicitly accepting orders and authority of another to carry out such actions.

What? In an economy like this?

Hmm, better to duck out, lay low, keep your head down and survive. Go to one of those taverns and have a beer behind one of those tiny points of light called a candle. Don't worry about the horrible nasties outside eating school children, you never had a chance to fend those attacks off anyway.

If you are lucky, you might get to see the great extinction of your own kind.

    Dude...

Well, since the trolls are coming out to play, I guess I should make an appearance too.

    YOU'RE ALL GOING TO HELL!!!!

    Pass me the cheetos.

    Nuh.

"The People" are The State, so if they all want to kick back and watch the Superbowl or go fishing then all is good. Welcome to Democracy.

Of course, any time you want to point out where the Wolves are at, or where this Uncivilised Society is lurking, I'd be keen to see it - because its all sunshine, rainbows, and lollipops round here.

The key 'big issues' are what beach to go to.

YD has made D&D so deliciously subversive for me.

I find that bubble wrap and duct tape work for me...

I figure that my gaming conversations are the reason the FBI/CIA/Insert Black Agency Here/Neighbors tap my phones and monitor all my Email and calls... I'm doing my part to keep the informants employed in this economy!
