Some people have made statements about the Reagan years that are just not true. It took me a little while to pull together the information to refute the misstatements, but I finally did. My sources are the Census Bureau, the Congressional Budget Office, The Treasury Department, and the Internal Revenue Service.
- Average real family income rose by over 15% fron 1982 to 1989.
- The lowest 1/5th of Americans saw their real income increse by 12%
- Families earning more that $50,000 went from less than 25% of families to 31% between 1982 and 1990.
- 65% of people in the lowest 1/5 of income brackets moved up at least two brackets. More people moved from the bottome fifth to the top fifth between 1982 and 1989 then stayed in the bottem fifth.
- Individuals were five times more likely to have their income increase than decrease.
- The percentage of taxes paid by the top 1% of wage earners grew by 40% to 25%. The percentage of taxes paid by the bottom 60% of wage earners decreased 20%.
- The total population living below the poverty level decreased by 3.8 million people.
- Funding for social welfare sevice grew at an annual rate of 3% between 1980 and 1990, twice as much as between 1970 and 1980.
- From 1987-1989 the budget deficet decreased by $150 billion, despite tax cuts and unchecked government spending.

Forgive me but could we have the same timeframe on all the stats? One goes from 82-89, one goes from 87-90 and one goes 82-90. None of those correspond with Ronald Reagan's time in power, which was 1981-88. It's quite hard to take those at face value when they don't actually correspond with the time he was in office.EDIT: Thank you for digging them up, though.

The differing time frames have to do with how the various agencies gather information. Most of them gather them over three, five, or ten year incraments, which just don't fit neatly in the boxes of 8 year presidential terms.
I don't think it was deliberate. I just have an uncanny habit of going off topic on sidebar conversations. It's like mingling at a wine tasting. :POh so it's your fault.

yeah!!!!! though i didn't know anything about him at the time, i was born in 1980, looking back Ronald Reagan was one of the best!

What's the secret? I have four cats and it's a constant struggle. Doesn't the litter get expensive after awhile?
I had spoken to Bruce one time and he brought up the PFS event, but I think the schedule being pitched didn't work out well for a schedule that would be possible with my existing schedule.
We scoop twice day and change the litter every two weeks. The litter is insanely expensive and it is likely the largest expense in the house. Our litter boxes are huge and we fill them pretty high when they are changed. If they need to be "topped off" we have an extra tub of litter for that purpose. We also utilize odor reducing powders that help keep the smell out of the air and out of my nose. It is a pain but I do love the cats. The 5th addition to the house was....an accident. So it has made things a bit more difficult.
Food is the next largest expense. Part of that has to do with our 25 pound cat. At least I am pretty sure it is a housecat and not a lynx or some such thing. :)
Our current PFS schedule is every other Tuesday, beginning January 5th, at 6:00 pm. Stop by sometime if you can. We have a pretty active group. Actually two groups, but I only run one of them. No worries if you can't. I understand schedule issues. I wish mine wasn't so open right now. :)

Because if I can get along with a couple of local Hippy Dippy tree huggers like Allen and and Urizen, it's kind of pointless? ;-)
Hmmmm....I have been known to hug the occasional tree, especially during those crazy Midsummer Rites. And I have been friends with my fair share of hippies (and goths, rivetheads, and what not). Finally, I believe I am getting pretty dippy as time goes on. Not sure where my mind has gone. It didn't leave a forwarding address.
So, I think the term fits. :)
But I am not a very effective environmentalist. I am way too lazy and way too much of a fan of the history/benefits of the industrial revolution. Those Victorians knew how to party. ;)
I imagine getting along with Matt might be the sign of the upcoming apocalypse.
