"Dawn watch for me then"

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

First Watch, approx. 7:00 to 10:00 -- Alia and Swiftpaws (scent), Gurg (low-light vision, likely murderous tendencies)

High Watch, 10:00 - 1:00 -- Richard (spells prepared, if left undisturbed), Rasina (low-light vision)

Deep Watch, 1:00 - 4:00 -- Artimus, Montegue

Dawn Watch, 4:00 - 7:00 -- Mikka (low-light vision, spells prepared if left undisturbed), Nadeq (spells prepared if left undisturbed), Durnast (spells prepared, if left undisturbed).

Still to be determined: where are you camping -- rope trick or on the ground; with a fire or not? Where are you patrolling (other than Montegue on the dome)?

No fire as it would be too visible and will not deter anything living here. We will camp close to the building at the top of the rise.

Alia and Swiftpaws will patrol around the building, looking at anything that could climb there while Gurg stays put.

Male Human Diviner 7 (favored class)

No fire: check. Dawn watch for Durnast sounds fine...
Cam can help out for High watch and Deep watch with his Darkvision.

Durnast will cast Rope Trick to sleep in (up to 8 'creatures' can fit inside, so anybody who wants to can),
since it lasts only 7 hours I will say he rests an hour outside first.

Probably we should stake the horses close-ish (~20'?) to the building by one of the buttresses?
If people on watch spread out to cover different approaches, any outdoor sleepers (?) would probably be between the horses and those on watch...?
Durnast would locate the rope trick similarly, but ~20' away from anybody/thing else. The new PRPG version of Rope Trick doesn't let you pull the rope up completely, but I figure I can loop the rope in a slip knot so it is looped in a small bundle hanging just under the portal... located, say, 15' up.

We might want to switch Richard/Rasina/Nadeq and Artimus/Montague's shift around so there is somebody on both High/Deep watch that can cast Light...?

Given the trials we've already gone thru together, Durnast thinks it's a good idea to share some of the gear we got earlier at the Inn (a Small-Sized poison-spiked +1 leather armor set would be good for Nadeq, also a +1 dagger if anybody wants it (if not, I'll carry it), a potion of hiding, MW lockpicks and MW weapons/armor). Because it's useful for my scribing costs, Durnast would have wanted to split up the gold earlier in town with the 4 of us at the Inn.

So until I copy the Jebli Brother's spellbook spells into my own spellbook(s), I can't memorize them, right? If I have some time later (on my dawn shift, say) I may want to do some scroll scribing if possible.

Rasina can cast Light. During her watch, she would patrol the area around the building, and stay in the Rope Trick off watch.

She would not mind the Lockpicks, the potion or the dagger, but won't fight for them. She will pass on the armor.

All options sound fine too me. Like I said, I only need 2h of rest to be fully rested.
And I have no need of the items either.
I also want to update my spells, so I'd like to know how many (lesser) restoration and cure diseases I need for the party :)

I will need at least 2 Lesser restore spells, and Mikka is still diseased.

Alia will need one lesser restoration

Wow Richard is like Walgreens. You just turn in your prescription, and it's ready the next day ;-}.

First Watch, approx. 7:00 to 10:00 -- Alia and Swiftpaws (scent) patrolling, Gurg (low-light vision, near-certain murderous tendencies) standing watch. Everybody else wakes and assembles up in a rope trick at 8:00. No fire.

High Watch, 10:00 - 1:00 -- Richard (spells prepared, if Richard's "spell refreshment" has happened; I presume you cast all the cure disease and lesser restoration spells at that point?), Rasina (low-light vision)

How are the two of you standing watch?

Deep Watch, 1:00 - 4:00 -- Artimus (patrolling around the grounds), Montegue (on the dome top)

Dawn Watch, 4:00 - 7:00 -- Rope trick ends; everybody resting is on the ground. Mikka (low-light vision, spells prepared at dawn), Nadeq (spells prepared if left undisturbed), Durnast (spells prepared if left undisturbed) and Cam.

How are the four of you standing watch?

Durnast wrote:

That's correct. "Copying the spells" involves a careful analysis and unlocking of their secrets, as you recast the glyphs and triggers into your own vocabulary. Until that time, you can't prepare them.

GM Chris Mortika wrote:

Rasina will be patrolling the grounds, in opposite circles from Richard. Since there is some moonlight, she will not cast Light, unless it becomes necessary, he he.

Cam was going to help on High and Deep Watch, using his darkvision and flight.

I suggested having 1 Caster of light on both High/Deep Watch,
so perhaps Montague or Artimus could switch with Rasina?

I would be OK with switching watches.

Sure. Artimus will switch with Rasina. It'll give him time to chat with Richard.

First Watch -- Alia and Swiftpaws (scent) patrolling, Gurg (low-light vision, near-certain murderous tendencies) standing watch. Everybody else wakes and assembles up in a rope trick at 8:00. No fire.

High Watch -- Richard (spells granted, if Richard's "spell refreshment" has happened; I presume you cast all the cure disease and lesser restoration spells at that point?), Artimus (patrolling around the grounds)

Richard, neither of you can see well in the dark. Do you want to light torches, or rely on the natural moonlight?

Deep Watch -- Montegue (on the dome top), Rasina (low-light vision, patrolling around the building)

Dawn Watch -- Rope trick ends; everybody resting is on the ground. Mikka (low-light vision, spells granted at dawn), Nadeq (spells prepared if left undisturbed), Durnast (spells prepared if left undisturbed) and Cam.

m Halfling Rogue 3 / Transmuter 3 / Shadow dancer 1

Nadeq patrols with stealth on the ground
stealth 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (8) + 24 = 32
Perception 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20

Rasina takes up her patrol silently and watchful.

Stealth 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (18) + 16 = 34
Perception 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague takes time walking the dome during his watch. Trying to determine if anything might be spotted at a distance.

1d20 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 26 Perception

Montegue, as you're looking out in the distance, you hear a hissing sound, close by. You see in the dim moonlight, some sort of steam or smoke escaping through the crack. It seems to move on its own accord, independent of the light breeze. Did you want to make a Stealth check?

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Seeing the strange cloud of mist, Montague flattens himself against the dome, trying to observe without being noticed.

1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23 Stealth

The mist solidifies. It first forms the head of an enormous yellow-and-brown spider (wearing a metallic headband), then two emaciated human arms (both of which wear elaborate rings) then a spiders thorax and distended abdomen, covered in a dozen or so polyps, and finally the arachnid legs. It looks like it's the size of Swiftpaws, with a legspan of 15feet if they were stretched out. Around its neck you see a necklace with a couple of sparkling red gemstones.

Rasina, you see this, too.

What in all the holy gods name is that? Rasina thinks as she flattens herself against the building. Knowing the horses present a tempting target for the creature, she tries to hide from it as best she can. Stealth 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32

Chris, how far is she from the Rope Trick entrance?

Let's put the rope trick entrance 30' to the north of the north-west corner of the building. The horses are tethered off to the north-east of the building, maybe 40' away from the nearest edge. (This puts them about 50' away from the edge of the mesa.)

Rasina is moving around the building, and, letting north be 12, south be 6, she's at 1d12 ⇒ 12 o'clock. So she's not far away from the rope at all. If she moves to it, though, she'll be out in the open, and Stealth will be much harder.

The spider sees the horses tethered off there, and hisses "Kej nephoat. Yaj'cuv vajg joaghinn?"
Montegue:

Spoiler:
That's infernal for: "Those are mounts! What in the deep hells are they doing here?"

Male Human Cleric / 7

Yes, I cast the three lesser restorations and one remove disease.

Lesser Restoration 1(Rasina): 1d4 ⇒ 4
Lesser Restoration 2(Rasina): 1d4 ⇒ 3

Lesser Restoration 3(Alia): 1d4 ⇒ 2

Remove Disease (Mikka): DC 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

And spells are updates in Richard's profile.

Richard, should we assume, then, that you receive your spells at dawn?

Male Human Cleric / 7

Nope, after my 2 hours of rest I pray for my new spells.

Cure the ones that need curing ... and see if I can be of any assistance.

I don't need 8h of sleep with my shiny ring :)

Now that I think of it .. I'll be at every watch .. after my 2h sleep ..

Richard Trannyth wrote:

Richard, you don't need 8 hours of rest, but the neither do any clerics, in terms of spells. Your spell slots refresh automatically at some point during the day, typically dawn.

Richard Trannyth wrote:

That might help. Since you're up, Richard, make your Stealth check.

Male Human Cleric / 7

Unfortunately, I don't think it will help when I do my stealth fail ;)
Stealth: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (13) - 4 = 9

"What in Thyr's name is ... that !??!?"

Any knowledge checks I can make to ID it ?

Richard sees Rasina and Montague flatten themselves against the dome, Richard attempts to move silently to the dome. Hoping his armor doesn't make too much noise.

Profile updated.

Rasina winces as she watches Richard vainly try to hide from the creature. He is not really suited for that kind of work, he is more of a challenging type, and I would not have it any other way.

She carefully watches the creatures reactions, waiting for the best time to strike...

The knowledge skill to familiarize yourself with this monster is arcana.

Richard moves to the (1d12 ⇒ 12 o'clock) north face of the building, right next to Rasina, stumbling over the buttress in the center of the wall.

The creature turns its head in that direction, and maks a great leap up and off the building, landing 40' north of Richard and Rasina. (The entrance to the rope trick is 15' south and 25' west of the creature.)

Montegue, you're pretty sure it isn't aware of you yet.

"Kuv schar (*)og dass'hidu" it says, matter-of-factly (where (*) is a glottal clicking sound, and the apostrophe marks an unvoiced release of air, like a quick sigh). Although neither Richard nor Rasina speak it, they both recognize the language as one spoken by demons in the Tomb.

Montegue:

Spoiler:
That's Infernal for: "It appears we have thieves."

"Richard, we need to keep it distracted, so it doesn't notice..."

Rasina watches the creature carefully, not drawing her weapon, for the moment. She decides to buy Montague some time, in order for him to warn the rest of the sleeping companions.

"So, you are an Infernal realms dweller. Do you spoeak our tongue?" She articulates in Common.

Ready action to cast Protection vs. Evil on myself should the creature move towards us.

If you want to pass Richard a hidden message, that would be a Bluff check, DC 15. Your result sets the DC of the creature's Sense Motive check to understand it, too.

If you just want to talk quietly, set a Perception DC for Richard, and we'll give the creature a -4 penalty to its Perception check as well.

If you want to alert the people sleeping in the rope trick, I'm not sure what Montegue could do, hiding on the dome, that you couldn't. For that matter, just igniting a sunrod would probably do the job.

Rasina wrote:
"So, you are an Infernal realms dweller. Do you speak our tongue?"

"I dwell here. This is my home, and you are trespassers and thieves. From your corpses, I shall fashion a warning."

Lets do a Bluff check then, 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Rasina replies to it, Always a pleasure talking with such scum, right Richard?"

Cast Light on the square beneath the Rope Trick.

Edit: Or we could do what the spell actually says it does, he he. Change to cast Light on a rock and throw it to the square underneath the Rope Trick

That'll trigger combat. (Reminder: Richard does not have his spells back yet; no attribute damage or diseases have been healed.)

The battlefield:

The building is square, occupying C10 (northwest corner), K10 (northeast corner), C18 (southwest corner), K18 (southeast corner). There are buttresses coming out of the centers of each wall: from G10 to G8, from K14 to M14, from G18 to G20, and from C14 to A14. The eight bas relief sculptures protrude out enough that someone in C10 would have partial cover from someone in F10, etc.

The portal to Durnast's extradimensional space is in A4.

The creature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Montegue: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Rasina: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Richard: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6

24 - Montegue -- on the dome (anywhere from F13, F15, H15, H13) --
22 - Rasina -- in E8 --
17 - The creature -- in E1 --
6 - Richard -- in F8 --

If anyone else would like to awaken, that's a DC 25 Will or Reflex save, whichever is better for you. If Rasina casts light, or somebody makes a lot of noise, you get a +4 situation bonus. Once both happen, you have a +8 bonus.

Rasina prepares a simple cantrip of light, throwing it on one of her iron bits she recieved in the Camp. may as well get some use out of these things. She holds it up high in one hand, letting it illuminate the darkness, while drawing her rapier in the other.

Chris, does the light need to be directly under the portal in A4 in order to be seen?

No. People in the rope trick can see out, as if looking out a bay window.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

"Not so fast Misty one" Montague speaks in Infernal. Then he shoots at the beast with his light crossbow. (Not really expecting it to be effective, but maybe distracting). Montague intends to move, about, taunt the creature and make it chase him in order to allow the remainder of the party to prepare

Crossbow (Higher ground) (1d20+8=11)

it's amazing how some characters consistently roll high, and some consistently low using the same program

Male Human Diviner 7 (favored class)

Durnast wakes up with the sudden illumination 1d20 + 9 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 9 + 4 = 32,
to find Cam dozing nearby instead of on watch as he was instructed. 1d20 + 10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 10 + 4 = 19

Durnast's Init: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Can he see the monster from inside the rope trick (which is 15' up & 20' away from the thing)?
(If so, Know:Arcana to ID the monster and it's disposition/abilities: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35)
I'll wait for others to post, if they don't wake, I'll probably wake them somehow.
Since my Init is after Rasina's, I guess I would act now after her... Do I have a full action, or what?

Here is a map (lo-rez style!) of the set-up so far. UPDATE:Richard now really is in F8!
I placed Monty @G13 b/c Scran didn't specify where on the dome, of course he can update that however...

Durnast Kal wrote:

Rasina and Richard are next to one another, he is in F8. Probably want to update the map soon, you almost caught something naughty happening, he he

Montegue, the bolt lands in the silt next to the creature. "Ah!" it calls, "scariol whik-rujack ternass dass'hidu, leh scariol nehn. Cachya doo ri?"

Durnast, you are barely aware of a discussion in Infernal being carried on out there, but you're too sleepy to make out the words.

Montegue:

Spoiler:
"Ah! I thought the number of thieves was too few for the number of horses. Is that all of you?"

Rasina casts her spell and makes her throw. It lands 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 right where she intended, casting a shadow of the rope up onto the ceiling of the extradimensional space.

Durnast, you're waking this round, and can make a move action. Next round, you'll be able to act fully on your initiative.

Durnast:

Spoiler:
This looks like it might be the full-spider form of a arachnid lycanthrope known as an aranea. (You were just finishing your apprenticeship when you met one, but she kept to her human and hybrid forms.) The one you met was emotionally cold and obsessed with minutae, which you understand to be typical of the race.

She was also a powerful sorcerer. Your skills, these days, probably rival hers, then. But even aranea children naturally gather some arcane powers. There's apparently a hierarchy of powers, a guild ranking system, indicated by the number of gold bands on the forearms, from 1 to 10. The more bands, the larger the threat.

Oh, and in their full-spider forms, their brains are in their bodies, not their heads.

The spider sees the light, and the rope hanging down from mid-air, and responds. "And your last two members are hiding, then. Let's keep them there, for the time being." It shifts form, becoming a short, dwarf-like creature, wearing yellow robes, with six gold bands running down his left arm. (Disturbingly, when he shifts form, his spider head folds down into his chest, and a large hump on his back becomes his dwarven head.) He casts stinking cloud, and roiling green vapors billow up from the sands, surrounding the space outside the rope trick. Everyone inside the space is safe, but leaving will subject you to the full force of the spell. And vision to the rest of the fight is obscured.

Richard, you're up.

And I'm leaving a comment on the Discussion Thread.

Updated map with Stinking Cloud Effect...

Wake-up rolls:
Alia: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19; not yet
Swiftpaws: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19; not yet
Artimus: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20; not yet
Gurg: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24; awakened by the light.

Gurg turns his enormous head from the light, squints, and rumbles, " Who's that guy?" When the green cloud appears, he begins waking the others.

"Looks like you have trouble."

Next round, everyone can act.
Alia: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Artimus:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Chamomile: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Durnast: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17; before the aranea.
Gurg: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13
Mikka: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Nadeq: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Swiftpaws: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Male Human Diviner 7 (favored class)

Grimacing, Durnast responds "Does that look anything like those creatures who attacked you earlier?" (to Gurg)

Figuring he can help the others awake, he also raises his voice to announce in a terrified voice "Oh no! There's some sort of monster outside!" (since sound apparently passes thru the portal)

If possible (and if necessary, given his shouting giving a bonus to wake up), Durnast will use his Move Action to step over and wake Alia, shaking her awake.
(I figure it's better if she can already stand up this round)
Otherwise, he will draw a Scroll of Greater Invisibility.

Shaking folks awake is what Gurg was doing.

"No," he says with some disgust. "Those things were just, like, spider-crab things."

Male Human Cleric / 7

Please DM PC my character. I only have GPRS here ... and the connection speed sucks ... I'll be back on monday.

Richard looks shocked at the pillar of green mist that surrounds the rope. "An example, you say? Well, indeed: an example of what happens when we resist creatures like you, befouling the sacred sepulcher!" He charges forward and attacks.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15; misses, even with the bonus for charging.

Round Two

24 - Montegue -- in F14 --
22 - Rasina -- in E8 --

17 - Durnast --

17 - The Aranea -- in E1

14 - Nadeq --

6 - Richard -- in E2
5 - Chamomile --

Montague uses this round to move closer to the beast. (Run down one of the buttresses, and jump to the ground, then move to within charging round for next round)

Acrobatics (1d20+14=25)

Rasina cautiously advances towards the creature, drawing her magical dagger, while murmering a protective spell on herself. Move 30' north to square E2, and Cast Protection vs. Evil on herself, +2 deflection bonus to AC, AC currently 23, and +2 resist bonus to all saves.

The Save bonus doesn't stack with Cloak of Resistance, but if Monty wants to extend that movement (which he didn't specify the square) to stun/grapple the Aranea, Rasina could possibly get Flanking to Sneak Attack instead.
