Round 4
3- Montegue moves forward, from L31 to L13, right next to one of the Dire Ghoul Wolves. (This was a full-round action; spending a ki point wouldn't have allowed you to close the distance and still allow for an attack.)

Round 5
21-
Swiftpaws -- maintains his guard. So long as Alia and her monkey friends keep killing the undead so quickly, the horses are likely to stay safe.

21- A Ghoul Wolf -- stumbles out of the sleet storm into K14, orients itself, and attacks Artimus' mount. (Not the best choice, but it's following orders.) (1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25; it hits, and does 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 points of damage.)

The horse (fortitude saving throw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20) is not paralyzed by the ghoul wolf's bite. The bite might cause the horse to fall, however. The wolf's trip attack (1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12) does not overcome the horse's CMD of 23.

21- Mikka -- you're hopelessly surrounded. What will you do?

21- Durnast -- uses his pearl of power 2 to reprepare scorching ray.

19- Alia -- Flat out runs to K18. This puts her 20' away from the ghoul wolf that just sank its teeth into Artimus' horse. There's an enormous ghoul wolf 10 feet further away, focused on Mikka.

19- Windrazor --

17- Chamomile --

5- The big Ghoul Wolves --

5- Nadeq --

17- Rasina -- double move forward to L20.

4- Artimus --
3- Montegue --
1- Richard --

Female Human Mooncaller Druid 4

Seeing herself surrounded, Mikka's flame form begins to move, carrying out intricate patterned movements.

Natural spell to cast in elemental form. Concentration check to meet DC 19 for casting defensively. 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 No AoO for wolves.

A three foot long blade of white hot flame springs from her fiery hand, curved like a scimitar, the crackle of the flame ominous as she begins to twirl the blade around her.

Casts flame blade

Durnast plans what to do after we defeat these monstrosities...
(I'm back!)

Round 4
3- Montegue -- moves forward.

Round 5
21-
Swiftpaws -- maintains his guard.
21- A Ghoul Wolf -- attacks Artimus' mount.

21- Mikka -- conjures up a flaming scimitar.

21- Durnast -- uses his pearl of power 2 to reprepare scorching ray.

19- Alia -- Flat out runs to K18.

19- Windrazor -- would he swoop down in a fly-by attack, or do something else?

17- Chamomile --
5- The big Ghoul Wolves --
5- Nadeq --
17- Rasina -- double move forward to L20.
4- Artimus --
3- Montegue --
1- Richard --

Male Human Cleric / 7

If all goes horribly wrong with Mikka, I will run forward and attempt a Turn Undead.

For now I hold my ground.

Windrazor will attempt another flyby on one of the big wolves

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Earlier today, I had presumed that Windrazor would have done something like that. I rolled through the encounter, and, well, set that aside and decided to make sure that I wasn't placing Windrazor in peril on my own.

Windrazor doesn't have the Spring Attack feat, so the Ghoul Wolf will get an Attack of Opportunity against the bird as it moves off. (attack: 1d20+17 = 20+17 = 37; confirm critical: 1d20+17 = 9 + 17 = 26; critical confirmed) (damage: 2d6+14 = 3+6+14 = 23 doubled, or 46 points of damage) (paralysis and tripping seem irrelevant). Additionally, the fall, which he's no longer pulling out of, delivers 1d6 ⇒ 5 points of damage. Windrazor is down and bleeding out his last seconds of life in the bleached white sands.) [/spoiler]

If you can demonstrate any way that Windrazor isn't subject to an AoO, I'd be open to that.

17- Chamomile -- holds actions.

5 The big wolves -- both attack Mikka. (west wolf: attack 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (2) + 17 = 19; misses ) (east wolf, the one with feathers in his teeth: attack 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (8) + 17 = 25; hits. damage: 2d6 + 14 ⇒ (3, 5) + 14 = 22 can't paralyze an elemental. Free trip attack: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (15) + 24 = 39, which beats Mikka's CMD. ) The east wolf is subject to burning. It takes 1d6 ⇒ 5 points of damage and (saving throw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17) avoids catching on fire.

Nadeq, you're up.

Male Human Diviner 7 (favored class)

Ugh. I was going to suggest this before Chris' post but thought it wasn't my business...
It seems reasonable that anything at all familiar with fighting Large-sized beasts like these Zombie-Worgs (or whatever)
would realize that defensive precautions like Tumbling while passing thru their Reach increase the chances of not getting hit,
and it doesn't really impose any action limitations to pull off (other than 1/2 speed thru Threatened area to get the best DC).
EDIT: I guess WR doesn't even have Acrobatics... Are WR's skills updated for it's Companion Level or not?

I actually thought that on his turn Durnast could pull out his oil lantern with his Move Action, and hand it off to Cam.

I'm not sure how it would work, but Cam could possibly disassemble it to extract the oil flask (which he could throw/drop on a Zombie Wolf),
or throw/drop the whole contraption doing blunt damage and hopefully breaking/spilling the oil flask in the process...? (for me to light up the oil ASAP)

Female Human Ranger 7

Once in position, Alia will concentrate her shots on the Big wolf in K-L 11-12 hoping to distract it from Mikka

1st Attack with deadly aim, point blank shot manyshot and rapid shot
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29, damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17 + damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
2nd Attack with deadly aim, point blank shot and rapid shot 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15, damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19
3rd Attack with deadly aim, point blank shot 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27, damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21

Edit the third one is a critical: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 to confirm, damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14, damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19

Female Human Mooncaller Druid 4

Uhm...wow...damn. Dow to -13 so he's pretty much dead. There's really nothing to be done for it. As much as it sucks. Mikka's about to go berzerk

Durnast wrote:

An oil lamp pretty much works as an oil flask with expensive additional equipment around it. But the reservoir doesn't really detach. It's throwable as is. Camomile flies down to just above the western wolf's reach and drops the lantern. (attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 --oh, excellent!) The lamp breaks over the wolf, doing 1d6 ⇒ 2 points of damage.

The eastern wolf sees what's happened, glances down to the fire elemental about to enter a furious rage, and smiles. "Oh, it appears they're going to set you on fire."

"Then I shall roll around over your corpse after they kill you and we'll all have a fine barbeque," retorts the oil-covered ghoul wolf.

Probably. He'll get down to -14 (negative CON) on his turn next round. He's (1d8 ⇒ 1, due north of the giant ghoul wolf, 1d8 ⇒ 8, 40 feet, which puts him somewhere inside the stinking cloud.

Question, would using my Heavenly Fire ray have any effect on WR? Or is WR considered a Neutral creature?

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

(Wow. What a poorly-worded ability! As a note, you can target any character with heavenly fire, not just foes!) Windrazor is Neutral. And he's also inside a noxious cloud of magically nauseating vapors. You'd need to get pretty close to him to even see him to target him with the effect, and at that point you might as well just kneel down next to him and try to stabilize him.

Ok, who wants to lodge the formal complaint to James or Jason about this? Not me, he he.

Rasina sees the loyal and steadfast hawk swatted out of the sky like it was just a sack of wet feathers.

She yells at Mikka, "I will help Windrazor!", and she will run into the cloud to reach the fallen hawk.

Just so you guys know, I believe Paizo's in the process right now of writing up a signifigant Errata/ Update for the next printing. I'm sure they already have alot of changes, but if you could whip up a possible re-wording that was TIGHT (and preferably shorter), they probably won't turn it down. Just say "This section is hella hard to read, and it doesn't need to be" and offer what you came up with. (in the Rules Forum, i guess)

Rereading the ability, it clearly says foe, but it is implied you can target anyone with it. SO I would say adding the words 'friend or foe' instead of just 'foe' would clear it up. I never had any real trouble figuring that out.

Round 4

3- Montegue -- moves forward.

Round 5
21-
Swiftpaws -- maintains his guard.
21- A Ghoul Wolf -- attacks Artimus' mount.

21- Mikka -- conjures up a flaming scimitar.

21- Durnast -- uses his pearl of power 2 to reprepare scorching ray, and hands the lantern to Chamomile.

19- Alia -- Flat out runs to K18.

19- Windrazor -- swoops down, gets bitten, and tumbles deep within the stinking cloud greviously wounded.

17- Chamomile -- flies down and drops the oil lamp on the wolf in K11-L12.

5- The big Ghoul Wolves -- Both attack Mikka. The wolf in P10-Q11 manages to bite her and pull her to her hands and knees.

5- Nadeq -- holding his action.

17- Rasina -- begins in L30

Rasina, if you drop all your defenses and just run like the dickens, you would pass straight through the fight between Mikka and the two large ghoul wolves, and end up in the stinking cloud, maybe close to Windrazor. But you won't have a standard action left to stabilize the bird, even so. Is that what you want to do?

4- Artimus -- draws his +1 undead bane longsword and swings at the normal-sized ghoul wolf in K14, that tried to kill his mount. (First attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14; hits, doing 1d8 + 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + (4, 1) + 3 = 9 damage.) Artimus catches it a glancing blow across its shoulders. (second attack roll: : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26; critical confirmation: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10; hits, but misses being a lucky shot, doing 1d8 + 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (8) + (4, 1) + 3 = 16 damage.) Artimus' return swing is better, but the ghoul wolf is still up.

Artimus' warhorse rears up and attempt to stomp on the wolf as well. (attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16). That's a hit, and the horse does 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 points of damage, killing the blasphemous thing.

3- Montegue --

1- Richard -- holding his ground.

I think an awful lot of these guys are Flanked somehow or another, if anybody with Sneak Attack can get to them, possibly with a Touch Attack...

Montegue is at L13; if someone else could get to K10, they would flank the giant ghoul wolf at K11-L12.

The only other opponent right now is the giant ghoul wolf in P10-Q11. (Artimus and his warhorse just killed a regular ghoul wolf, and by Durnast's count there should still be another one around, somewhere, but he's either in the sleet storm, in the stinking cloud with Windrazor, or invisible on the battlefield.)

Mikka is close, prone in N11, but she needs to make a 5' step to threaten either foe. Artimus and his warhorse are at L14-M15. Alia has run up to point-blank range on one of the beasts at K18. I'm still waiting for clarification on Rasina's position. Nobody else is currently very close to the battle.

Montague attacks with flurry of blows.

Flurry of blows (1d20+8=24, 1d20+8=9, 1d20+3=21)

Damage (1d8+3=10, 1d8+3=9) (NOTE: Attacks count as magical)

He will also spend a Ki point for defense, which should raise his AC to 33 when combined with the existing shield spell.

Montegue, two strikes hit, an elbow to the creature's muzzle and a kick to its throat, each one sending a cloud of silt and sand billowing off its fur. If its properly executed, that last blow always causes a spasm, but this creature isn't alive, and the lack of reaction is eerie. It turns its gaze away from Mikka, the dry eyeballs scraping quietly in their sockets as they focus on you. A voice comes from it, despite its inhuman tongue and lips, despite its lack of breath. "Show patience, man. We shall kill you soon enough."

The other wolf yips. "Your nose is worse than Merikrel's soul eaters. That's not a human; it's an elf."

"Doesn't smell like an elf from here. Smells mannish."

"Maybe it's one of those blended creatures, an elf-man."

"We should examine it once it stops struggling."

Waiting for Nadeq and confirmation from Rasina.

Even though it is a futile gesture, she will do it anyway. She does have a healing potion, can she feed it to WR next round?

All right.

Round Five, continued

4- Rasina sees Windrazor go down in the cloud of noxious fumes, almost certainly injured unto death, and abandons all efforts to engage in the battle, just flat out running to save the bird's life.

Artimus' mount is in her way, and she shoves it aside. She's barely cognizant that her path takes her through the battle between Mikka and the giant ghoul wolves until, as she's taking a leap over Mikka's prone form, one of the wolves (but not both) bites at her. (attack: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27, hits. damage: 2d6 + 14 ⇒ (2, 6) + 14 = 22 points of damage.) The wolf's jaws close in on Rasina's left leg, bite down hard, and attempt to flip her onto her back. (CMB roll: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (2) + 24 = 26 , which overcomes her CMD.) Rasina lands, prone, in N10, next to Mikka.

Rasina, please make a Fortitude save to avoid being paralyzed.

4- Artimus -- kills the regular ghoul wolf.

3- Montegue -- punches and kicks at the giant ghoul wolf that laid Rasina low (the one with unlit oil covering its fur).

1- Richard -- holding his consecrated ground.

Round Six

Held actions - Nadeq and Richard can act at any time.
21- Swiftpaws --
21- Any active normal-sized Ghoul Wolves --
21- Mikka, prone --

19- Windrazor --
17- Chamomile --
5- The big Ghoul Wolves --
4- Rasina, prone --
4- Artimus --
4- Montegue --

btw, I personally don't have anything like a square-by-square grasp on the battle-field, though it hasn't been directly necessary for Durnast so far.

Female Human Mooncaller Druid 4

Round Six

Held actions - Nadeq can act at any time.
22- Richard starts the round off by taking decisive action. To turn undead, he needs to be within 30' of the unholy creatures, and he's currently back at M27. He spends his full turn moving forward, to get within range, and ends his turn at N17. In Round 7, he'll be able to take a 5'-step and catch both dire ghoul wolves in his channeling radius.

21- Swiftpaws -- stands his guard over the horses in G19.

21- A Ghoul Wolf -- comes up around the western edge of the sleet storm, making its way to your mounts. It sees Swiftpaws there and holds its ground at D12. The two wolves, one loyal to Alia, and the other trapped in a mockery of life, growl at one another this round, both getting ready to pounce.

21- Mikka, prone -- Your turn. You'll need to move 5' in either direction to engage one of the dire ghoul wolves in melee. The one to the west is already covered with lamp oil, is already injured a little, and just tripped Rasina. The one to the east is the one who laid you low, after killing Windrazor.

21- Durnast -- What's probably most worth noting is that the giant wolf with the lamp oil is 90' away, factoring in vertical distance. The eastern creature is 100' distant. And there's now a normal-sized ghoul wolf off to the northwest, also 100' away. If you wanted to do something about Windrazor, your best guess is that the bird is 125' away.

19- Alia -- shoots at the nearest dire ghoul wolf.
19- Windrazor --
17- Chamomile --
5- The big Ghoul Wolves --
4- Rasina, prone and paralyzed.
4- Artimus --
4- Montegue --

Thanking Cam for his accurate work with the lantern,
Durnast swoops towards the fracas (60' movement, descending to 35')
and intoning ancient words of power, glowing sparks grow from his palm, brighter and brighter until they shoot out in a flaming arc towards the oil-drenched wolf closest to Mikka: (2 scorching rays)
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 144d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 1) = 111d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 134d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 2) = 14
(with +1 to-hit for higher ground, I assume since Mikka isn't adjacent to them it isn't 'in melee')
I assume that lights the oil on fire if it hits, so 1d3 ⇒ 2 for it's first round.

I don't know if it's possible, but I'd like Cam to Aid Another to help Swiftpaws' AC against the ghoul wolf he's facing.

That puts you in K16, above and a little left of Artimus' horse. The enormous wolf is 20 feet to the north and at 35' in the air, you think you're probably safe if it decides to leap for you.

It is in melee, with both Mikka and Montegue. (Mikka is currently a fire elemental, so that's moot. But Montegue will need to make a DC 15 Reflex saving throw to avoid catching on fire.)

Durnast wrote:

Not necessarily, but we'll give it a -4 circumstance penalty to its saving throw. 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14. (How do you make a ghoul wolf sound like a puppy dog? Light him on fire, and he goes "whoof.")

the eastern giant ghoul wolf looks at its partner and says, "See? I told you they were going to set you on fire."

21 - Mikka -- gets to her feet, which provides the great beasts an opportunity to attack her, as she's momentarily distracted. The western wolf, the one who's on fire, has already used its attack of opportunity, when it took down Rasina. The eastern wolf, the one that killed Windrazor, was waiting for this opportunity, and tries to bite Mikka's flaming form, before she can get to her feet. (attack 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (14) + 17 = 31; Mikka's armor class is 26 - 4 for being prone.) The creature hits, doing 2d6 + 14 ⇒ (5, 6) + 14 = 25 points of damage. But Mikka is immune to paralysis, and she can't be tripped, because she's already prone. The wolf might catch on fire (reflex saving throw: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25) but doesn't, taking only 1d6 ⇒ 1 point of fire damage to its jaws. It's tongue is smoldering now, but it seems immune to the pain.

19- Alia -- stops, draws, and fires point-blank at the nearest ghoul wolf. As three of the four arrows hit home, the ranger speaks in some unholy tongue. The wolf turns, confused, as the last arrow strikes it through the eyes, and it collapses in a loud, billowed lump of rapidly rotting meat.

"I'm afraid you have us confused with those demon-wolves over in the boneyards," replies the one still standing. "All pretentious, they are. We have no business learning the tongues of the masters. But speaking of tongues, doesn't that hurt yours? After I kill you, I'll want to look it over for blisters. Blisters are delicious."

19- Windrazor -- dies.

17- Chamomile -- flies off to assist Swiftpaws.

5- The remaining great ghoul wolf -- locks eyes on Alia momentarily. "You're the threat here, antlered-woman. Stand still just a moment longer, while I make my way towards you."

It moves away from Mikka, whom it no longer considers a threat, and attacks Artimus. (attack: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (14) + 17 = 31, which I believe is a hit). Damage: 2d6 + 14 ⇒ (6, 3) + 14 = 23 points of damage. Artimus (Fortitude save of 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30) is not paralyzed. But the attack (CMB: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (9) + 24 = 33 beats the paladin's CMD) picks Artimus out of his saddle and drops him, prone, to the ground.

"Beg, little paladin, and I will spare your life. I might even let you bury the remains of your companions."

4- Rasina -- struggles to rise, but her body won't respond this round.

4- Artimus -- laughs. "The only begging I'll do is beg pardon from my friends who would want to dismantle you themselves." He channels positive energy, a supernatural action which does not provide the monster with an opportunity to attack, as rising to his feet or casting a spell would. 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1, 2) = 13 points of damage, from which the undead dire wolf takes (Will save: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25) half.

4- Montegue-- The large wolf is 10 feet away from you. You can close to attack, but merely stepping forward would provoke an attack of opportunity. There's also the smaller ghoul wolf off to the west, getting ready to throw down with Swiftpaws.

Who is threatened by the big wolf now? Is it within range of Richard's consecration?

And technically, doesn't Windrazor get a stabilization check before losing the 1 hp and dies?
The penalty from it's negative HPs probably mean only a Nat 20 works, but we can cross our fingers...?

BTW, I was looking for a previous post, and I realized, this Chris fellow really knows his foreshadowing:

Male Wolf Animal Compagnon 4

Head low on the ground, Swiftpaws trots to the dead wolf (move to E13). Used to fighting walking dead, he feints an attack to the throat and bites one of the forelegs of the monstrosity to hamper its movement and send it to the ground.

attack wolf in D12 1d20 + 5 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 4 = 17, damage 1d6 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 4 = 11

trip attack 1d20 + 5 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 5 + 4 = 28

Alia takes at step back to J19 and knowing the Giant Wolf can reach her fire four more arrows to the beast head.

1st Attack with deadly aim, point blank shot manyshot and rapid shot
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20, damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16 damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
2nd Attack with deadly aim, point blank shot and rapid shot 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16, damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16
3rd Attack with deadly aim, point blank shot 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10, damage 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

Good enough. That's a solid whack to the collarbone.

The enormous undead is in O13-P14. Montegue (in N13) and Artimus (prone in N14) are right next to it. Mikka is in N11, wounded, afire, and in full defensive mode. Rasina is in N10, prone and paralyzed. Richard is in N17. (You're all lined up. Where's a wizard with a lightning bolt when you need one?) Durnast is floating above K16. Alia is in K18. Nadeq is way down in N30.

Richard's consecrated ground only extends up to about N24. You've killed all the ghoul wolves before they had a chance to get close to it.

Quandary wrote:

Indeed. (check:1d20 ⇒ 11) Sorry; this just wasn't Windrazor's day.

Good to hear!! Do what you can, and we'll see you when your problems clear up. (The same for Artimus, of course. I'm always happy to see people's activity level return, although if Jylan shows up, we'll have awkward news.)

Round Seven

22- Richard -- also uses his connection to the celestial realms to open a channel to the positive material plane, the source of all life, and lets it rain down on all undead within 30 feet. The dire ghoul wolf (Will save: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17 takes full damage.

Now, that's interesting. In the areas around Artimus and Richard, there are scorch marks in the sand. Where the two channelling bursts overlap, the desert looks almost crispy.

Swiftpaws wrote:

21- The ghoul wolf had readied an attack in case any foe got within twenty feet, and interrupts Swiftpaw's approach with a lightning-fast strike. (He's in E15. Swiftpaws is in F16.) Both attacks will go through, simultaneously.

The ghoul wolf's attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21) He hits, and does 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 points of damage. (Swiftpaws' Fortitude save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13, which is enough to avoid paralysis.) The ghoul wolf tries to trip Swiftpaws (1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28, and Swiftpaws goes down.)

Swiftpaws wrote:

That's enough to hit. It takes damage, but is still on its feet. (Out of curiosity, what kind of bonus is the +4?)

Swiftpaws wrote:

That's more than enough to pull it prone. Both wolves are on the ground.

21- Mikka. The creature that killed Windrazor has walked away from you, contemptuous. You're standing there, and a 5'-step will take you close enough to hit. Or you could move (over to Q12) and flank it with Artimus.

21- Durnast --

19- Alia -- warns people away from the beast and showers it with shafts of undead-killing accuracy.

That's Alia favored ennemy bonus against undead. It also applies to animal companions.
