Edit PDF Bookmarks / Links?

Product Discussion

Dear Paizo,

I love your PDF products very much.
They're very convenient and they make my life much easier.

That being said, I would LOVE the ability to edit the bookmarks and links.
It would be awesome if we had some extra customization options to make referencing things a little bit quicker/easier.

For example, it would be very convenient to be able to create bookmark folders for each PC/NPC that contained the pages pertaining directly to them. Imagine being able to create a customized list of spells or abilities. It would be a huge time saver.

I know that you need some level of security protection for the PDFs and I agree with that, but would it be possible to give us the necessary permissions just to edit the bookmarks and links?

I believe with PDFs, edit permissions are an all or nothing affair. aside from adding notes and markups.

Being able to add notes and markup would be cool also.

I know it's important for Paizo to be able to watermark the pages to prevent piracy.
Is there any way we can keep the watermark intact but give people more control of the PDF?

I wonder if their system has a way of flattening the watermark against the background so that it's no longer an editable layer. If the background and "watermark" were fused into one image, that would prevent people from taking advantage of the permissions and removing the watermark.

Is the watermark the main security feature or are there other features that I'm unaware of that would be compromised by giving people permission to edit the PDF?

I'm not 100% sure why we don't allow folks to edit bookmarks, but I suspect it's because of anti-piracy measures.

Pretty much. We allow everything we *can* allow that won't *also* allow you to easily remove the watermarks.

That would be awesome, but no, there's no reasonable way to do that.

That's a bummer, but I understand the need for security.

Maybe new options will open up as PDF software technology evolves.

An option you may consider is the Turbo-PRD(PDF).zip I put together. It is a zipped PDF copy of the existing PRD website but in a PDF format. You can download it here.

The PDF is completely open. You can add or remove bookmarks, move pages around, do whatever you want.

I haven't added the monsters in yet though so its basically everything minus monsters at the moment.

Use a Firefox plugin that let's you mark up a web page -- without actually changing the page itself. It's very cool if you upload your snippets to the web and let others share them. ;)

That might work for the PRD website but I think the OP was talking about the PDF.

If I remember, there's a way to bookmark pages from within Acrobat (even with the Reader only version) that doesn't affect the document per se, it stores the information in Acrobat, so it's totally legal.

Get the javascript plugin (yes, Acrobat uses javascript plugins) here :

http://www.pdfhacks.com/bookmark_page/

Installation instructions are here (don't bother with the download link on that page, it's for a simpler plugin):

Hope it works out!

Hello posters. I'm trying to get set up to table top projected maps like this:

http://www.d20srd.org/extras/tabletop_projection/

You seem like you know your stuff about PDF's on the whole. I have a few questions with regards to PDF's and editing them. So as to not thread jack I would like to point your attention to:

oh and if anyone cares to explain how to make the cool little linky things instead of a big ole URL to copy paste, I'm all ears. :-)
