Okay my party has just taken down Eel's end in a fairly spectacular fight. They now have some downtime before the shingles starts. Now instead of running the grave warrens, I'll probably be running the six trials of larazod from CoT. My party consists of two half-elves and an elf who want to travel to the mieriani forest. The wizard to learn some magic, the ranger to find his father and the druid to connect with nature again. What sort of interests would the elves have in Korvosa, i'd like to task them with missions to try and keep them focused.

The Dead Warrens becomes important later. Not necessarily the challenge itself, but specifically the act of gaining the trust (or at least thanks) of the Shoanti involved. It can make life in History of Ashes easier if things start to get tough for the PCs.
If you skip it, you may want to think of some other way of the PCs interacting with and gaining the trust of the Shoanti mentioned there during the first three urban modules. That still gives you the DM flexibility of pulling in Shoanti contacts later if you need them.

Since i don't have any shoanti in this group, i might change any shoanti references to elven ones, hmmm.
That will be a lot of work given you'll have to rewrite the entirety of A History of Ashes. I would run the Dead Warrens. The Vampire Spawn or the wererats encounter would be better ones to replace.

I agree with Paul.. also it gives you an NPC that you can play around with later for a side quest (Rolth) that has no further baring on the story, and the PCs detest.

Hmm, in that case I'll have to stretch out the XP progression running both Dead Warrens and Six Trials of Larazod. Still getting the Elf characters focused on the city is going to prove a bit of a pain, there just isn't enough to the city for me to entice a druid to care. The elf wizard is rather haughty, but after being kicked from the Academae (and had a rejected application from the Theumanexus Academy) he's done with human magic.

At some point...
The plague will start. Just have them find one of the boxes or contract it through their purchases, that'll give them some motivation. (Though you may wantto slow the progression down depending on their level and wealth.) As for the Druid, you could have the animals in the city also start falling ill... not just the strays, but Sable Company Hippogrifs, HellKnight Steeds, etc. Then have Cressida send the party, druid in tow, allow Heal checks and Knowledge:Nature in place of Remove Disease on the animals... who may just be carriers. *shrug*
I just went through this part for the 2nd time and we are honestly just too busy being "heroes" to even consider any personal goals.
I've seen a few others on the boards having similar problems with characters uninterested in the city, despite that being the whole point of the AP. Unless you're willing to abandon the campaign and have them roam where ever, it might be time for them to "Hero-up".

Take the background they write and figure out how Lamm's business effects them -
Maybe he poured some shiver in the lake nearby and the wildlife are being affected.
Both of these also lead into Eel's End with the tie-ins with the drugs
after this they should have some sort of comradeship, and some NPCs that they like and want to protect.

Just played tonight, decided to have a party at Carowyn manor. The elf wizard was tasked with convincing a powerful elven mage to stay in the city and take the reigns of the theumanexus college. The druid is staying around because he's looking for his parents (both elven and human) so I'll have to find some interesting options there. The entire party have been given the deed to eel's end, they have two months to turn a profit before the arkonas begin collecting. Fun times ahead.

Like the Shackled City Campaign, it is imperative that from PC Character background development forward the DM creates a strong connection between the PC's and some facet of the city of Korvosa. This tie can be family, lovers, a business or simple empathy for the citizens.
