Alright, I'm going to try this one more time. My last play-by-post was actually quite awesome, with some great players, but unfortunately I had made it too open ended, and I kind of painted myself into a corner, and without advancing the plot, everyone started to drift off a bit.
So this time around, I'm hoping to stay more focused by setting a few rules upfront and by using an Adventure Path to keep me on the straight and narrow.
With all of that firmly in place, let me tell you what I'm looking for:
1. I need four players, and we'll have a total of five (I already have a friend ready to play in this to begin with).
2. I need people that will check in probably at least once every three days so that we make sure to keep everything moving.
If you think the above is acceptable, phase two are the campaign standards (click to view):
Character Creation
All characters will be created with the “high fantasy” (20 point)purchase method (page 16 of the Core Rulebook).
Races
All of the races in the core rulebook are allowed for play. There can be no more than two characters of the same race in the party, with the exception of humans.
Classes
All of the classes in the core rules are allowed in the campaign. There can be no more than two characters of the same class in the party.
Characters will start with the average starting gold for their character class according to the chart on page 140 of the Core Rulebook.
Players may purchase equipment from any Pathfinder source, with the approval of the GM (for example, some items may be rare in the Varisia region, and thus restricted initially).
No characters in the campaign can start the campaign with an evil alignment.
Characters start at the maximum starting age for the class and race.
Traits are used in the campaign. Characters generated for a campaign using an adventure path that has campaign traits should use one of their traits to take a campaign trait. If you do not have the Second Darkness Player's Guide, leave one trait free, and we'll discuss the appropriate trait for your character.
Third Party Sources
While most third party sources are only allowed rarely, the Priest and Swashbuckler classes from the Tome of Secrets are both allowed, as is the variant non-spellcasting ranger from Kobold Quarterly 11.
"Table" Rules
If a character has not taken an action in three day's time, and the character is in a situation where all characters need to take an action for the story to progress (for example, combat, though not limited to combat), that character reverts to the GM's control until the player's next post.
In combat a GM controlled PC is invulnerable to damage, though they die if the rest of the party dies. The only actions a GM controlled character will take will be to move and to provide an "aid another" check for other characters.
Still with me? Good. Two more points before we get going here. First, when we do need to roll initiative, we'll roll initiative by "sides," meaning that I'll take all of one side's initiative bonuses and average them, and take all of the other side's initiative bonus and average them, and roll initiative.
The GM rolls all initiative rolls, and once its your "side's" turn, you can act in any order, which helps to keep combat moving fairly quickly. If Xnog the rogue posts first when its his side's turn, Xnog goes first, but if Vlog posts first next round, he goes first, so long as its his side's turn.
If you need to "pass a note," either to the GM or another character, use the spoiler tag, addressed to the party you want to read it. For example:
For the GM:
Try to keep in character comments and descriptions of actions in normal font, and use the [ ooc ] brackets for "game" actions, for example:
Vlog attacks with his longsword.
Vlog uses his standard action to attack with his longsword.
Player's should use the Paizo dice roller code for all dice rolls.
Finally, and this is really important for how I GM these thing, I need you to make up a separate message board alias with the name of your character, and I need you to fill out the profile with all of the information that you would normally have on a standard Pathfinder RPG character sheet.
Before you make up your character, however, post in this thread, and give me a character concept. I don't need pages, but I would like to have a character and not just a build to work with. Once the character sounds good, I'll give you the thumbs up, and once the character is made up and has its own profile, you're good to go.
One last thing . . . any feats for class features that use the Harrow deck and have the option of using dice instead of Harrow cards will use the dice instead, since its obvious to see what happens with the roll.

Heya KnightErrantJr. My last second darkness game died many moons ago and i'd like a shot at it again. We got through part of the first book, but not enough to seriously get me in trouble with plot knowledge. If you're happy enough for me to have some player knowledge for the first bit then I'd like to try this one out.
I'm keen for a wizard or sorceror, a young man cast adrift in the city when his mentor disapeared or died unexpectedly. He's desperate to keep himself afloat in this place of vice and corruption, and has managed so far but his luck is running out (not to mention his funds).
He's competent and has toughened up a little in the alst few weeks as a consequence of the situation, but still quite naive about the majority of the city and how it works.
I have a wizard already made up, but I'll need to convert across to Pathfinder rules (from beta).
DO you have any prefernce for type of arcansit? How do you feel about familiars, or would prefer arcane bond?
Cheers

Sounds like a good place to start. If you'd like to write him up and post him in an alternate profile, I'll take a look at him. Play what you wish to play, I've got no preference in that regard, except that people enjoy their character.

I am new here, but not to PbP, I am very interested if you still have room.
Well, nothing is set in stone until I approve final characters, so go ahead and pitch a character. If you are unfamiliar with making an alternate profile, let me know and I'll try to help walk you through it.

What about an elven fighter whose family owes a debt to one of the crimelords in the city? He's working it off through guard jobs and the like and hoping against hope that he doesn't wind up getting an assignment of murder...
The background sounds like a good start for a character, and fighter is definitely a good fit for the group. Go ahead and write up the alternate profile and we'll see how this looks.

Nani Silentfoot(Human Rogue)
Nani always strives to be the best, she is strong willed, thickheaded and good at what she does. A simple cutpurse? Never her. Her ultimate goal is to lead the thieves guild, but she knows she has much to accomplish, skills to hone...and people to off on her way to the top. Trained by the best to be the best, she started her career early in life, her girlish charms paying dividends in some of the most uncertain circumstances because people trust her face, the face of an angel. Who suspects a 16 year old girl with blue eyes and blonde hair is going to steal their gold, or slit their throats? A lot more people do now than a year ago, but not enough as should.

Good start. Dark side to her, which is good, just don't make her too dark (non-evil and all). If you wish to do so, go ahead and write her up an an alternate profile, and we'll take a look at her.

If you still have room i could make a half-elf bard.
It looks like the current que is full, pending everyone getting characters made up on alternate profiles. If something happens between this stage and that, you'll be the first alternate to pitch a character.
Thanks to everyone so far for the interest.

Greetings, I am the friend mentioned in the first post.
Here's my concept:
Tsadok Duskwalker, 1/2 Orc Monk of Irori.
A child of the temple that primarily worked as an apprentice to the clergy in helping bandage the wounded. Not at all wise in the ways of the outside world, but has been charged with finding out about the world at large outside of the temple.
>serious query: Any chance a bonus skill point feat would be available? I know Open-Minded from complete adventurer opened that up, but it's not a PFRPG feat. Any chance something similar is available?<
KnightErrantJR |
Question, do clerics get their diety's favored weapon as a free proficiency? I plan on using the starknife so I need to know whether I'll need to spend my feat on it.
Looking good, we'll lock in Tippello as a character, and I'll try to get the "discussion" thread up soon so we can get going on where everyone is and how they know one another, etc.

I don't want to make things too complicated with outside sources, but, and I know its not much, you can always take your "favored class" benefit as a skill point instead of a hit point.
Concept is good to go when you are ready to flesh him out. Thanks.

Hi just want to throw my name in here as a possible alternative if you happen to need an extra player at some point (Since far as I can tell your full right now)
So far we're full, at least in concept, but you're #2 on the list if anything happens and we have an opening. Thanks for the interest.

I was in a PRPG Second Darkness game that died due to RL issues. The character therein was another half-orc monk -- I'd love to bring him back to life if you ever get to #3 on the alternates list.
I haven't touched his sheet since the game ended, so this is still beta-based: Jagor Bonebreaker

Hey, Catman, if you are still following this, you were first on the list of alternates, so if you want to drop a concept in with some details, we can see that that will work out. If I don't hear from you over the weekend, I'll have to drop it to the next alternate.
Thanks!

You'll be on the alternate list after Kevin Mack. Thanks for your interest.

I really like this concept, but I'm hoping to have some contact with a further update by the end of the weekend, or I may have to move to an alternate. Thanks again for you interest and the concept.

i have a bad cold so i wiil be indespoed in tull mon. so you might want to go with #2
That's not a problem. I just wanted to hear from you to make sure you were still interested. If you can get it up and going by Wednesday, we should be fine, and if anything else comes up, let me know. Thanks.

You don't need to have a character ready to go, but I'd like to at least hear from you before I get off work tomorrow (4 pm Central Time), or I may have to move on to the next alternate. I just want to make sure you are still interested and are going to be able to check in fairly frequently once the campaign is going on.

Kevin, if you are still following this thread, go ahead and pitch your character concept, I'm bumping you up the list. Thanks.
