Pathfinder PbP Expedition to Demonweb Pits Campaign

I don't like Drow. However, with the PFRPG, there are some interesting things going on that make this personally reviled race something I'm interested in running. So, based on that, I have converted of the Expedition to the Demonweb Pits to PF, and I'm looking for players, four to eight, to be exact.

Rules are simple:
Start at level 9
PFRPG 25-point buy,
2 free traits (this represents the myriad of regional feats)
Fast XP Chart
Good or Neutral with good tendencies for the alignments (no EVIL alignments)
Let me know of any non-PF prestige classes you would like to convert (if any), we'll work on those together via email so as to not violate any OGL issues with the site, but posting the idea out there won't hurt anything (just the conversion itself).

Hero Points:
You gain a number "lucky" dice that allow you to do some special things. (essentially ripped right out of FantasyCraft here)
You can do the following:
Boost any d20 die roll by the amount you roll
Boost any damage roll
Boost your armor class by +2 (considered a dodge bonus/luck bonus, stacks with everything)
Heal your character of a small amount of damage (the die roll)
Obtain a Hint at where you are to go next (although I can spend a hero point to deny this request, but usually will not, unless it spoils the tension).

Characters obtain these during each of the "phases" of the adventure, and I'll also be handing these out. Remember, I get to have these as well (I gain them differently than you, but suffice to say I start at the next step higher than your characters).
Each character starts with 4d6 worth of hero points (a.k.a. 4 hero points) at level 9 and 10, and this amount will increase to 5d8 at levels 11-15, increasing to the final amount of 6d10 at levels 16-20.

A couple of feats related to this:

Spoiler:

The following feats are adapted from FantasyCraft (in order, Black Cat is B's Blessing, Fortune favors the bold becomes Lucky Hero, Lucky Break becomes Tymora's Luck. These have been tweaked from their original versions, and the rules are similar, but not exactly the same.

Beshaba's Blessing
You may spend one hero point to raise an opponent's fumble range on a weapon by the amount you roll for the remainder of your current combat. (no, this does not allow a save).
Note: You may not possess this feat and Tymora's Luck.

Lucky Hero (not the regional feat)
When you spend a hero point to boost a die roll, the roll you make is increased by the number of remaining hero points you have +1 (obviously, minimum +1).

Tymora's Luck
When an attack hits you and succeeds by hitting your exact AC or your AC+1, you may spend a hero point immediately to negate the damage.
Note: You may not possess this feat and Beshaba's Blessing.

The world will be the Forgotten Realms.
I'll allow the following extra races: 1/2 Drow (swapping low-light vision for 60 feet of darkvision, otherwise the same as a half-elf), any Genasi, Aasimar, or Tiefling as they are written, but I'll be lowering all of their ECL's by 1, making them ECL 0. No subraces further than that (as in all dwarves, regardless of subrace, are just pathfinder vanilla dwarves, there aren't 50 different species of elf, etc. This is to accelerate the character generation, not hinder creativity, as I'm personally fond of the extra subraces, but want to make this easy on everyone (especially ME). You can call yourself whatever kind of elf, dwarf, or gnome you want, but it's all the same to me.

The year will be 1371 (meaning that neither the Shades nor Bane have returned). If there is interest past the Expedition, I will run the City of the Spider Queen at the end, as an add on to the campaign (I find level 12 to be MUCH more appropriate for the start of CotSQ).

As to posting (and posting etiquette). I will be posting for sure every Sunday night and Thursday evening/Friday Morning (Central United States time). I hope this allows everyone a chance to post between those days, and will not allow the game to lag. If something comes up in a spoiler, I will try to reply to it within a day.

If you do not post for two consecutive posts of mine, I will take temporary control of the character to not allow lag. This will be done quicker if there is a combat involved.

Please create an alias to place your character into. I'll be using an alias (DM_Darkmeer) to post all of the campaign information.
Dice will be rolled using Invisible Castle (I like that dice roller, and it's in the top of the above alias profile).

I hope to have the game started on Sunday, September 20. Character recruitment stays open until then.

Hot Damn! Ninth Level! I'm so INterested!

Playing an Evoker.

Welcome Radavel!

I almost forgot. The initial starting location will be Tilverton. Yes, that Tilverton. Your characters will be working with a local merchant having some issues along the mountain pass into Daggerdale. From there... we'll just say the adventure begins ;)

Dark Archive

Tilverton, Cormyr, I guess that rules out me being a Red Wizard then. How about a War Wizard?

Sovereign Court

I have a hankering to play a paladin in this..time for a good smiting..But I'll have to brush up on my realms lore which I havent used in years.

Radavel:
War wizard would be fine... And I don't believe any major conversion is necessary other than the skill list, which would be virtually the same as for a Wizard.
Skill List:
Appraise (Int), Craft (Int), Fly(Dex), Knowledge (all) (Int), Linguistics (Int), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (wis), and Spellcraft (Int)

Looks like the requirements would be:
4th level spells, Spellcraft 7 ranks, via the conversion document.

Wellard:
Most important would be choosing your paladin's deity. There's lots of fun things to do, but I'd say any member of the Triad, Red Knight, or Helm would be appropriate in this case. Other than that, you could just choose to be a part of the Cormyrean army or something of that nature.

Welcome both of you to the game :)

Sovereign Court

I'd love to play in this. Any chance I could play a tiefling paladin(possibly with levels of rogue)?

Argh. Looks like you beat me to the punch on the paladin. I wonder if that's like two bards showing up for the same quest...

Are you thinking a Grey Guard type of Paladin, or more of a reformed rogue?

Either way, I would say yes if, and only if, you spend a feat on Devoted Inquisitor from Complete Adventurer. This isn't terribly powerful on a PF scale, and it will allow you to do some interesting things.

Although odd, I wouldn't be surprised in Cormyr to see this happen. Thus my previous post.

Oh gosh oh gosh oh gosh. I want to be a part of this!

Definitely yes to the feat. Now I have to figure out which is more interesting--trying to put his rogue skills to good use or put it behind him...maybe a little of both.

I'm working on a wizard now. He's going to be an elf from Evereska.

Thumpy, I have other character options if you have set your heart to playing a wizard.

EDIT: Fellow players, can we make characters who already know each other? A strike team under orders from Azoun sounds very good to me right now....

It would go a long way to explaining more than one paladin in the group. Perhaps the other paladin is a mentor to my devoted inquisitor, leading him toward the light he desperately yearns to be worthy of?

Radavel wrote:

Oh, hi Rad! You can be a wizard if you want. I'll probably go with being a monk.

A dwarf monk .. yeah !

Sovereign Court

I'll be going with a paladin of Tyr..and an inquisitor would certainly fit into that structure.

I'd like to play a dwarf fighter, one who is on the small side but dumps all his points into strength (unnaturally strong for his size). I have a 1st level version here. I'd be interested in mixing in one or more levels of rogue, ranger, or bard to improve skills when I boost him to level 9, as long as his axe-wielding doesn't suffer too much.

EDIT: If there's too much overlap with other people's choices, I could also level up one of my other characters, provided that a female character will not be awkward to play in this group. I have two: a fighter and a bard (both human). Either could multiclass to mix in skills or magic.

A party of six to eight Paladins would be hilarious...

The Realms has like 15 LG gods alone (although 11 of them are Egyptian, Dwarvish, Gnomish or Halfling!).

With the grappler PRC from complete warrior?

That would be cool ... but I think the party really needs a cleric. Maybe a priest of Tyr or Tempus, who would fit in with a very warrior-oriented group.

A rogue would also be nice, but of course we cannot discount the sheer lethality of area effect spells.

I would rather like to join and would be quite happy as the party cleric. I haven't had a chance to play a PFRPG cleric yet, so it should be good.

A CG Human Cleric of Tempus sounds like he'd fit right in.

OK, since grmnbln wants to be a cleric too, I'll switch to a bard / loremaster. He'll be able to guide the party through the Underdark using his uber-knowledge skills (making knowledge checks untrained!)

Dark Archive

Wellard - Paladin
Warforged Gardener - Paladin/Rogue?
JZ - Bard/Loremaster
Minkscooter - Fighter/Bard?
grmnbln - Cleric
Radavel - Evoker

An additional Cleric, Rogue, Ranger or Sorcerer should round out our little strike team.

Could you use a ranger?

Greene Tanache, devoted inquisitor, is done except for background. Let me know if he's acceptable so far. Once he's done, I'll add all of his information to the alias profile.

Are hit points rolled or are they a set number(1/2+1 looks like what Pathfinder Society uses)? Probably should have asked that before.

Liberty's Edge

If there is still room. I'd like to play a Ranger/Windwalker of Shaunakul. Shocking I know, considering my user name.

Dark Archive

Are we allowed to take the Leadership Feat?

Threadjack: Anyone here read Order of the Stick?

I follow the Order of the Stick.

Wow. This is a lot of folks here, so we'll go by slots so far:

1: Radavel: Likely Evoker Wizard
2: JZ: Bard Loremaster
3: Wellard: Human Paladin
4: Miniscooter: Dwarf Fighter
5: Grmnbln: Cleric of Tempus
6: Finrod: Ranger
7: Warforged Gardener: Rogue Paladin (literally)
8: Shaundakul: Ranger of Shaundakul.

Wow. Very warrior heavy. I've not seen a warrior heavy group like this. I'm surprised, actually. Not unpleasantly, just surprised.

As to hit points... I completely forgot about them. I like the PFS 1/2 HD+1 method. I think it will make it more fair, and prevent anyone getting stuck with a bunch of ones for HP's, especially the wizards.

At this point we are full, folks. I'm surprised how fast this filled up. I'll be looking at Wellard and Warforged Gardener's characters, and likely approving them (with caveats for HP's, if necessary). One thing of note, and it's not a problem at all, but I was surprised nobody above took rogue as their only class. This grouping should prove interesting for the adventure.

Radavel: I am okay with the leadership feat... although if you just want a lackey... err cohort... You may take a feat "Personal Attendant" and use your leadership score for just the attendant, rather than have all the flunkies.

Please everyone have your characters ready by Thursday for approval.
Also: Please keep your character information in your profile (sorry Warforged Gardener). I really would prefer to keep this all together on the Paizo site for simplicity's sake (excluding the dice roller, of course).

Answering Threadjack: I like the OotS.

I'm surprised it took this long. I think traffic has been light this weekend. :)

I fiddled around with some Realms dieties, to see what Domains they'd end up with if 'normalized' for Golarion (only five Domains), but didn't get around to hammering down a single concept I wanted to play. (Instead of, yanno, *eight.* Would it be the Lantanese gunfighter of Gond? The Mulhorandi Aasimar-Cleric of Anhur, with a MW Falchion shaped like a lightning bolt? The Chessentan wrestler / warrior / monk, specialized in Pankration? The schmoozing Red Wizard of Thay Enchantress? The Zakharan genie-binding sorcerer, headed into Bonded Summoner? The setting bleeds with potential.)

Not a problem. I just didn't have time to type it up yet. The meat and potatoes is done, I should have my profile finished tomorrow.

Sovereign Court

I've been with the OotS since about strip 75..so I guess we all know how NOT to play a paladin

Dark Archive

Well I will be presenting an evoker that breaks the stereotype.

Alright I'm making my last (and final, I swear) class change: a dwarf bard / wizard diviner. I want to serve the party as a one-man intelligence agency. He'll have ranks in linguistics, knowledge on top of untrained knowledge checks from the bardic knowledge ability. As an eighth-level diviner he has detect scrying as a permanent ability.

Here's his wizard spell list. I'm looking for suggestions on how to improve my choices:

Level 1
Burning Hands, Comprehend Languages, Detect Secret Doors, Detect Undead
Hold Portal, Identify, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Obscuring Mist

Level 2
Detect Thoughts, Knock, Locate Object, See Invisibility

Level 3
Arcane Sight, Clairaudience/Clairvoyance, Lightning Bolt, Tongues

Level 4
Arcane Eye, Geas Lesser, Locate Creature, Scrying

And here's his bard spell list:

Cantrips

Flare, Know Direction, Message, Mage Hand

Level 1

Erase
Feather Fall

I know you mentioned that this was full but if a space does become available I would be willing to play a halfling rogue?

Hey, it's Dr. Dark! He's an awesome DM, and I know he'll play a great rogue (we need a full rogue, anyways.)

JZ wrote:

Thanks for the praise JZ. It means a lot.

Dr. Dark! wrote:

Alright, since we need a rogue... I'll stretch two more slots here.

Dr. Dark gets a slot, and if you can get what concept you want ready by the end of the week, so does Set.

We are at 10 characters people. I'll be adjusting the adventure accordingly.

/d

I'm almost done with my dwarf fighter. I gave him 1 level of rogue and skill focus (disable device), hoping to make up somewhat for the lack of a real rogue. Now that we have a rogue, I may keep it anyway, since I kind of like how it's turning out.

I assumed 46,000 starting gold and freedom to purchase magic items from the PRPG. I'll fix that if you had something else in mind.

DM Darkmeer, can I take Knowledge-Nature and Knowledge-Geography skills specifically for the Underdark?

Can someone explain to me the PFS 1/2 HD+1 method for HP?

JZ wrote:

d6=4 hp

d8=5 hp
d10=6 hp
d12=7 hp

Once you see it like that, it's easy to figure out. Instead of rolling for hit points, you just take a standard amount each level(except, presumably, first level).

I suspect with so many combat-heavy characters, we were already stretching the challenge rating boundaries a bit.

I'm reading up on Forgotten Realms right now so I can have my background up tonight.

Gotcha, thanks Greene.

Liberty's Edge

It may take me a day or two to get mine done, but by Thursday should be no problem. I'm still trying to decide between Human and Half-elf and tinkering with the idea of an Air Genasi.

Nearly done, but I have a question. For an Aasimar is the favoured class fixed to paladin or is it a choice like the core races?
