Mundane equipment questions

Rules Questions

Hey everyone,

First off all thank you very much to the entire Pathfinder team for making such a great product :) Pathfinder is awesome and every time I read it I love it more.

I have a few questions about mundane equipment.

1. How long does it take to scatter caltrops on the ground? A Standard action? A Move? Do you think caltrops can only be placed in an adjacent square, or is it realistic that they could be tossed 5 ft away and still spread effectively?

2. Pitons - trying to be inventive here, do you think pitons could be used to jam a door and make it harder to open? I'm not sure if spiking a piton at the bottom of the door would do much but maybe if you stick it in the hinge-side (assuming the door opens towards you)? Do you think it would be reasonable to grant, say, a +2 DC to opening a door?

3. Jammed locks. The Disable Device skill description says you can jam a lock with a DC 10 skill check. Is there any indication of what jamming a lock does? Does it have any hard rules effects, or is it up to DM interpretation? For example, could you treat a jammed door as being locked or stuck if someone tries to open it? Does it make the door any harder to open by adding to the opening DC?

4. Flasks of Oil. The rules cover situation where oil is used as a flammable weapon - "You can pour a pint of oil on the ground to cover an area 5 feet square, provided that the surface is smooth. If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 1d3 points of fire damage to each creature in the area". Do you think oil could also be used to trip people or make things slippery, almost like a mundane 'grease' spell? A pint of oil seems a bit too small for this effect, but the item description does say that 1 pint will cover a 5x5 space. Maybe if you had 4-5 pints?

Also, how long does it take to pour the oil on the ground? A standard action? Move? Free?

Anyway, if you have thoughts I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

my understanding is as follow(though I am no expert):

1-caltrops are a standard action, and can only be used adjacent to you.

2-pitons can be used to make a 'stuck' door with a dc 13 strength check to open.

3-jamming a lock closed forces the door to be broken rather than opened, and use the appropriate break dc found here:

4-any kind of oil acts as the spell grease, but only covering the area listen in their description.(1 sqare rather than 4 for flask of oil) and is also a standard action.

hope this helps
