I was wondering if, by RAW, you could charge up to these hapless guys and make a vital strike and a cleave in the same round, maybe sprinkle it with a touch of Power Attack? Sort of a thing you'd like your average barbarian or fighter to do, once in a little while...
Jason I believe answered in a different thread that as vital and cleave take standard action to initiate you therefore cannot combine with cleave or a charge as you only get one standard action a turn.
Cant see why you couldnt use power attack though as thats just a modifier rather than a full action replacement.

As of the current rules, you cannot use Vital Strike as part of a charge. Vital Strike is an attack action, which is a type of standard action. Charge is a special full-round action (excluding partial charge). You cannot currently combine the two.
The wording on cleave and vital strike perhaps needed tightening.

I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that you could indeed charge in and smack some vital strike on a guy, if you can put it like that, and that is what vital strike is meant to be used for, as far as it goes, since that removes some of the annoying part of having only one attack as you close in on your adversary....
Or am I misunderstanding something....
But I guess I'll have to read closely whether it's a standard action or part of a standard action...
And yes.. a more clearly worded explanation might be in order ;-)

It should also be noted that Vital Strike is a regular attack action (i.e. it affects the standard action that anyone can take to make one attack), while Cleave invents its own type of standard action ("cleave attacking" is a standard action which people with the feat can take and others can't).
What this means is that you can't Vital Strike and cleave at the same time, but you can combine Vital Strike with other things that work with a regular attack action (such as Spring Attack). Yea, these things probably could have been worded better.
In any event, you absolutely can take a move action before doing either; that's what they're there for. You can also make a cleave or vital strike on an adjacent foe then tumble away, denying them their full attack.

So basicly, you just can't charge and do the bad thing to the bad guy... A bit odd, but I suppose you get enough good action from the +2 to hit and the double move... Ah well... Can't win every time ;-)
But Vital Strike and PA is an okay combo, and what was that again? Cleave as well?!?
So stroll up to the guy and his friend, whack him with Vital Strike and PA and the Cleave his buddy also with VS and PA or just regular hurt?
Oh man, I'm so confused, but thank you all anywho! ;-)
(is this brain-leakage I detect?)

You can't combine Cleave and Vital Strike. Power Attack is fair game though.
