"Oy! I hope you girls are good shots!" Gandel shouts as he jumps down into the pit, attempting to draw out the drakes and provide his companions with clear shots.

Move action to jump down into pit - DC 15 Acrobatics Check to avoid damage from 10 ft. jump down: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

"Gandel-lad," the young gnome thinks to himself, "this has got to be at the top of the list of the stupidest things you've ever done!"

Landing in a crouch, Gandel fires his crossbow at the first drake to break cover, then drops his crossbow and draws the spear he took from the kobolds, taking up a defensive stance.

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage Roll: 1d6 ⇒ 3

After firing his crossbow, Gandel will take the total defense action to boost his AC by +4, giving him an AC of 20.

So, where is that cleric that was going to join us?

Half-Elf Ranger 2

Thorn fires off another shot and loads another arrow.
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Gandel (22)
Guard Drakes (21)
Sesinia (21)
Suny (18)
Thorn (16)

Gandel drops down into the pit, unharmed from the fall. Then he shoots one of the drakes. The drakes move out and attack him.

Drake Attacks:
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 201d6 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 121d6 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 81d6 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

Fortunately for Gandel, he dodges one, he armor takes care of the other's attack, and the one that gets him only nicks him (1 dmg). Sesinia's spell kills that one a split-second later. Then Suny and Thorn kill another, leaving Gandel in the pit with one more drake. And you hear the sounds of kobolds coming from the corridor on the other side of the pit! They'll probably arrive in a few seconds!

Emboldened by his companions' marksmanship, Gandel stabs at the remaining drake with his spear.

Attack Roll: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Damage Roll: 1d6 ⇒ 2

By the way, Gandel's AC is now 16.

OOC: How smooth are the sides of the pit? Would Gandel be able to climb out by himself? Or would he need to use a rope?

Hearing the kobolds coming from the opposite hall, Sesinia shoots a quick ray from her finger hoping to dispatch the drake.

Ray of Frost Ranged Touch 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 Damage 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Sun reloads her x-bow for this round,

"Are we got'a wait here fer the Ko-boilies? Sesina, I've a rope in me pack if'n Gandel don't look like they c'n get back up here in'a hurry. Another thought though, is there another way out o' th' pit down there?"

She throws her ideas out as fast as she reloads.

Half-Elf Ranger 2

Thorn spins, arrow ready waiting for the first of the scaly bastards to show.

Gandel and Sesinia's shots hit and wound the creature. However it's still standing and attacks Gandel. Gandel manages to avoid the attack.

Drake Attacks:
1d20 ⇒ 101d6 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

Then six kobolds arrive through the corridor and then the first two drop to the floor at the edge of the pit.

The walls are masonry, thus it's a DC 20 climb check. Thorn you can make an attack against a kobold if you want. You didn't say you were holding you're action, but I'm assuming that was your intent.

Fem Elf Bard 3

Third Round:

Suny adjusts her grip, smoothly shifting the stock to her shoulder she wastes no time in sighting upon the Drake within the pit.

Attack Roll:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Damage Roll:1d8 ⇒ 2

"Okay, Thorn? How's about you keep firin' at th' new guests across th' way? Sesina? How you doin' fer yer arcane stuffs? Ye may want's t' keep somat flashy fer when things get a mite more close an' personal? How ye goin Gandel? Ye be needin' that rope yet?"

I do hope we c'n deal wi' th' Drake soon enugh. Ye can't fight a fight on two fronts an' be hopin' t' win.

Sesinia turns her attention from the drake and shoots a ray of crackling electricity from her finger into one of the Kobolds drawing near.

Electricity Ray Ranged Touch 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 Damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 Shoot at a kobold within 30ft not laying down.

Half-Elf Ranger 2

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

"Come and get it you bastards!"

Gandel stabs again at the remaining drake.

Attack Roll: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Damage Roll: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Are the kobolds on the same level at the ladies, just on the other side of the pit? Or are they down in the pit with me?

Sunset wrote:

"Might not be a bad idea, when you get a second!" the gnome yells back to Suny. "But our new friends may not want me to leave yet!"

What is up with the 18's? I think that's the third one in a row in this PbP that the dice roller has given me. Not that I'm complaining!

If his attack kills or incapacitates the drake, Gandel will use his move action to attempt to pick up his crossbow and try to find some cover to hide behind from the kobolds. Possible checks needed (?): Acrobatics - 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17; Stealth - 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16

Fem Elf Bard 3

Um, new round?

Gandel wrote:
"Might not be a bad idea, when you get a second!" the gnome yells back to Suny. "But our new friends may not want me to leave yet!"

Suny nods at the Gnomes words, though she takes a five foot step to her 'left' around the pit, so as to make the group of the three woman standing/kneeling at the edge of the pit less of an area of effect target.

"Sesina, you may have t' be doin' th' honours o' gettin' t' th' rope fer Gandel."

She kneels again as she re-loads the x-bow this round, bracing the weapons bayonet against any potential charges from the small lizard like creatures she can now see.

"Geeze, ye're right Thorn. Skinky lil' critters, ain't they?" She grins,

"Hey! Any o' you lot speak common type o' words?" She yells to the group of Kobolds.

I be thinkin' th' Kobolds are up here wi' Thorn, Sesina an' m'self. You've just got the Drake effect down there with ye Gandel. (^.~)

Sesinia grabs the rope from Suny's pack and ties one end around her waist and throws the other down in the pit to Gandel. "Ready when you are Gandel." She says while kneeling next to the pit.

Gandel (22)

Guard Drakes (21)

Sesinia (21)

Suny (18)

Thorn (16)

Kobolds (15)

Gandel finishes off the drake before it is able to attack him again. Sesinia shoots and kills a kobold. Then she starts to let down a rope for Gandel. Suny addresses the kobolds and the one in better armor responds, "Yeah, what if we do, what's it too you?". Another of his companions is hit and wounded by Thorn's arrow, but he and the other kobold that's still standing join they're brethren at the edge of the pit. Then they fire crossbows at Gandel and Thorn. But none of them hit.

Kobold Attacks:
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 101d6 ⇒ 6
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 121d6 ⇒ 3
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 51d6 ⇒ 6

The kobolds are on the other side of the pit.

Suny can't help but giggle a little as Sesinia's tugging on her back-pack straps wiggles the straps about her torso.

At the one Kobold's responses to her call, Suny laughs,

"Right, mates! You heard the chirpy one. That's the critter we talk too after this tiffs been resolved." So saying Suny takes aim at the Kobold on the 'Speakers' left,

Attack Roll:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Damage Roll:1d8 ⇒ 4

"HA! Pegged ye, ye lil' bugger!" She chortles happily at her shot.

Half-Elf Ranger 2

"Why would we talk to a corpse?" Thorn quips as she fires another arrow off.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Gandel grabs his crossbow and crouches down behind one or more of the drake bodies, attempting to gain cover (+4 to AC) or at least partial cover (+2 to AC) from the kobold archers at the top of the pit. The plucky gnome pulls back the string on his crossbow, loads a bolt, and takes aim at one of the kobolds above.

"Um, so that we can better glean the possible displacment of this establishment?"

"An' cause we in't pirates.....yet...." She finishes over-ly loudly for every one else to hear.

Exactly how many Kobolds are left?

As Sesinia sees Gandel duck behind the drake's corpse for cover she figures he will not be needing the rope at the moment, so she fires another ray of frost at the Kobolds.

Ray of Frost Ranged Touch 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 Damage 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 @ one of the Kobolds shooting at Gandel.

Gandel (22)

Sesinia (21)

Suny (18)

Thorn (16)

Kobolds (15)

Gandel heads for cover, then Sesinia tries to blast a kobold with her ray of frost, but it goes over him. Suny manages to shoot and kill one herself. Thorn however, misses. The kobold responds, "Even if you kill us it won't do any good! Our priest is using a holy relic to summon a servant of our God to strike you down! We just have to hold you off until then!" Then they fire another volley. Two of them hit Thorn. (5 damage)

Kobold Attacks:
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 201d8 ⇒ 3

As the Kobold's bolts find their mark in Thorn's flesh, Suny growls even as the other 'elf' hisses in pain,

"Okeys then, Chirpy's done told us all we need t' know!" She returns fire with vengeance on her mind as she aims at the loud mouthed Kobold.

Attack Roll:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Damage Roll:1d8 ⇒ 6

"That'll teach ye t' open yer needle mouthed beak!" She snarls in anger.

From his crouched postion behind the fallen drakes, Gandel fires his crossbow at the kobolds. As soon as the bolt is away, he pulls back the string and reloads in preparation of shooting another kobold.

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Damage Roll: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Oooh! Suny, you appear to be threatening a critical hit with your crossbow's attack roll. Confirmation?

Half-Elf Ranger 2

Shaking with a combination of rage and agony Thorn curses loudly in Elvish.

She loads her next arrow with pained precision, aiming at one kobold as Suny targets the other.

"I am....NOT... going ...to die...in this....MUDHOLE... by one of .....you ...little .....%#^%&s."

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Since when does a crossbow crit on a 19?

Crossbow (heavy, light, and hand) critical threat range is 19-20 for x2 damage. It's this way in 3.5 and PFRPG.

Spoiler:
HP: 08/22, AC: 17(Max 21(T13,FF14), DR: 1(Water Based Critters), F:+4, R:+7, W:+2, Perc: +6, Init: +3.

Oops, an sorry I am fer that. *^_^*

Crit Confirm:1d20 ⇒ 17

Nope, looks like the Kobold's just gon'a wear th' six this time. Here's t' hopin' t'is enough t' crimp its day. (^.~)

Seeing Thorn's wounds Suny takes a five foot step towards her, the better to try and give her wounded freind some cover.

"Mates, mates! Have we anything fer Thorn? She be lookin' in'a bad way." Suny calls concern evident in her voice.

It's a Crit if your confirmation roll hits the kobold's AC - and you get to add your regular bonuses to hit to the roll. So you add your regular bonus to hit of +6 to your confirmation roll of 17 for a total of 23 to hit. Since you hit a kobold earlier with a total roll of 20, I believe (I hope!) your crit confirmation roll of 23 will likely hit the current kobold's AC.

Suny wrote:

"Ah, crap!" Gandel thinks to himself.

"I gotta lot of nothing in the healing department, except for a bottle of kobold liquor that'll probably kill you quicker!" the gnome shouts in reply. "Where's that cleric the Castellan was supposed to be sending to meet us?!?!"

"Thorn! Grab some ground and stay low!"

Sesinia sees Thorn get pelted with a few more arrows and decides it is time to do a little more damage.

Oh I think you put that bolt in his mouth. It's a crit all right

Gandel (22)

Sesinia (21)

Suny (18)

Thorn (16)

Kobolds (15)

Gandel hits and wounds a kobold. Sesinia hits and wounds they're leader. Then Suny hits and takes him out! Thorn hits and kills another. The last one gets up and then runs back into the corridor.

Half-Elf Ranger 2

With a groan, Thorn sits down with her back against the wall, slowly beginning the painful process of removing the arrows in her body.

"Yeild! surrender! Dangit STOP!"

Dang an' buggerit! I din't realize there weren't no way around th' dang hole in'a ground.

Yeah, I know t'aint smart, but.....

So, with a base move of 30 Suny can run at 120 flat out; 90 as a 'hustle' assuming she has to turn corners and stuff? She won't be trying to shoot the lil' bugger, just stab at him/it with the blade affixed to the x-bow, assuming the critter doesn't surrender. Heck, would it be easier to just thump him/it with the stock?

"Yeild! surrender! Dangit STOP!"

The only problem is you're on the other side of the pit

Suny shoots the kobold in the back just as he is grabbing something from his pocket. He falls over and dies.

Suny looks less than happy with the ending of the battle. She sighs,

"Ah, well Gandel? Ye think ye c'n get t'other side o' this set up an' me-be make a slight profit from them ko-boly tossers?" She looks down to where the Gnome stands in the Drake pen. "Sorry an' I am we weren't able t' distract th' lil' buggers from shootin' at ye." Turning she moves to Thorn,

"Ach, luv. Yer in'a state, ye've bleedin' all over th' place." Suny does her unskilled best to help with Thorn's wounds.

"Um, I'm thinkin' if'n we," She looks to Sesinia, "Take a lift under each o' Thorn's arms we c'n be gettin' her back t' town an' t' some better help fer fixin' up, hey?"

An' sorry I am fer puttin' up so many posts. I'll cut it back some an' let every one else be havin' more time.

Thorn works to bandage herself as best she can.

"I think you ladies did an admirable job distracting the kobolds," Gandel calls back up. "I'm just sorry that Thorn took the brunt of the kobold's ire."

Gandel takes a glance and a listen down the entrance of what appears to be the drakes' lair (Perception Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13), and then goes over to the wall of the pit below the kobolds and looks for a likely place to start his ascent. "I'll try to climb up and check out the kob's bodies. Maybe that leader has a healing potion or two."

Climbing at one-quarter speed means Gandel will have to make two Climb checks (DC 20) to ascend 10 feet:
First Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Second Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Oops! Looks like Gandel made it 5 ft, but then fell. Let's try again:
First Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Second Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Oy! Didn't even make it off the ground that time. Third time's the charm, right?:
First Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Second Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

Okay, one more time, and then Gandel may have to ask for help:
First Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Second Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Gandel suddenly remembers that he has a grappling hook and silk rope. The gnome sheepishly secures the hook to the rope with a tight knot, and tosses the hook to the top of the pit, hoping to catch a secure hold.

Per rules for grappling hook, must make a ranged attack roll, treating the hook as a thrown weapon with a range increment of 10 ft. Objects with ample place to catch the hook are AC 5. Well, let's see what we get:

Ranged Attack Roll with thrown grappling hook: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

If the hook is secured, Gandel will attempt to climb the side of the pit (again!) using the rope (I think it should be a DC of 5 now to climb).

First Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Second Climb Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

If the hook secured and Gandel made it to the top of the other side of the pit, he will search the kobold bodies while listening down the hall from whence they came (and frequently glancing that way) to make sure no kobold reinforcements get the drop on him (Perception Check 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20). He is particularly interested in trying to find any healing potions to take back to Thorn (and anyone else injured).

"Pretty magic lady!" Gandel calls across the pit in a loud whisper, "keep that rope of yours handy in case I need to make a quick getaway!"

If he hears reinforcements coming, Gandel will grab his grappling hook and jumb back into the pit (DC 15 Acrobatics Check to avoid damage: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25). He will then attempt to make an accelerated climb up Sesinia's rope (DC 5 Climb Check with a -5 penalty to move half speed: 1d20 + 4 - 5 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 5 = 15).
