The situation kind of reminds me of the school bus in grade school, vigorously, even angrily, debating which was better, the Super Nintendo (my side) or the Genesis (the hated David Watson's side). The month I started drawing in a pay check, though, the console wars ended for me and I've been an at least 3 console guy ever since. But that's kind of the deal, as far as video games go, if you want to play every game that comes out you have to own every system. If you don't, as is simply unfeasible for or perceived as unnecessary by many folks, you get to go where the horse you fixed your cart to pulls you. I will always lament that I never got to play Altered Beast on my SNES, but my psychologist has helped me through that dark part of my life.
As for our still largely in the dark iPhone venture, the stars aligned in such a way that we have the opportunity to do something neat with a company that has its resources at doing a specific thing in a highly visible but particular format. Our hopes is that by following this path we'll end up with something neat that people will like and might even furnish us with the opportunity to do more things like this. From there, who knows where things might lead. We're not trying to neglect or snub anyone, but we have the shot to do one type of thing right now and the options are take it or not. To take a cue from Lilith, it's like making peanut butter cookies, yay for everybody who can enjoy the first batch, and for everyone who can't have nuts, we'll try our best to make something you can enjoy with our next batches.
Gotta roll with Watson on this one.. Genesis all the way dude! Might and Magic was one of the best console RPGs of all time!

And no camera, for some dumb reason.
And no compass, like the new iphones.
Otherwise the same hardware. Most of the kids in my iphone development classes are working with ipod touch (myself included). I just can't reconcile paying three times as much for phone service as I do presently.
A camera on the touch would be nice, though.

My man! Final Fantasy VI! Aww yeah! One of those formative games for me, and really told me how NPCs can shine in a story, as well as the importance of giving the PCs some background and characterization.

*highfive* I am incapable of allowing Cid to die on the island at the World of Ruin beginning. Once I learned he could be saved, I could never bring myself to allow it, even if it did lead to an emotional scene with Celes.

Is there any *new* news about a Pathfinder iPhone app? I didn't care back when I didn't have one and was convincing myself I didn't need or want one, but now that that's over, I'd love to know if this is still in development and/or what a plan for release is?
lol
me too!
I'm an avid Mac fan, and finally ended the previous cell phone plan and got an iPhone. I expect to be getting an iPad later this year as well.
So ANY news would be greatly appreciated!

Working on it. This is our first iPhone app, so everything is taking longer than we thought it would. Couple that with wanting to make sure that they are the best.... But soon. Soon.

At a recent conference, Erik Mona mentioned that there were 3 apps being developed as far as I remember... are they going to be released together?

Check out the app named PFR (--> PathFinder Reference). It contains the actual OGL reference document for Pathfinder, including races, classes, skills, feats, equipment, conditions, spells, magic items and even the monsters.
Yeah I just found that...posted yesterday...
I hate being an early-adopter...but this might temp me for it. It doesn't seem like an official product, but that doesn't mean it's not quality.
I'm mostly afraid it'll be the SRD without anything else.
5.99 isn't much...
Somebody talk me out of this!

Thomax,
I presume you are the developer of the PFR app. I really would like to support a fellow gamer that developed an app for my favorite gaming system. However, I think you priced yourself out of the automatic impulse buy range. There are many articles about the downward spiral of the app prices on the Apple store and how it affects developers. I sympathize. At the same time I just can't help but be influenced by the current pricing trends and I need to figure out your apps worth to me.
My question would be, how different is your app than say accessing d20pfsrd.com in Safari? I presume that the information would be better formatted to the screen kind of like what Wikipanion does for Wikipedia. That is a valuable service (and I paid 4.99 for the pro version because I really like it and wanted to support the developer) but I would need to try it out before paying $6. Maybe more screenshots to showcase the formatting would help.
As I type this I feel really weird because I buy pdfs sight unseen (mostly) for $5 without a second though. Maybe my own impulse buy threshold is $5.
I don't know, I just thought it might be useful for you to know that the price point didn't fit into my personal impulse buy threshold and it forced me into thinking whether I actually need this and would I use it. I don't know how typical I am so take it for what it's worth.

So when is the non-iphone version coming out? For those of us with Droid or Blackberry phones.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, Avemar. I'm very grateful for some insight and advice! In my experience, impulse throw-away-apps must be priced very low ($1 or maybe $2), but the useful stuff which you use regularly can cost a bit more. But how much more? This is indeed a difficult question :)
On the one hand, I consider this app very useful, because I know me and my RPG-buddies will certainly will be using it a lot. On the other hand, I know I'm not going to get rich however high or low I price the app. And I also want to give back something to the community which conceived Pathfinder.
Torn between those opposing points of view, I ended up with $6. Which, after Apples cut, ends up at $4.2.
I will certainly take you up on your suggestion of adding more screenshots! What would be good and useful screens to see?
Also, let me add that the first update of the app will have bookmark functionality, eliminating the time it takes to browse your way to that particular spell or whatnot.

Great points. 5.99 is out of my "automatic buy" range but I'd pay that much for something that added speed or functionallity to just using a browser to get the regular PRD. Maybe a free 3-day preview or something to get me hooked?

Wait ... is THIS the iPhone app Paizo has been working on or is this something you came up with on your own?

Yup, 'tis so. I needed this app (the PRD easily browsable on my iPhone) myself. So I created it, and thought others might need it as well so I put it on the app store. I'm not affiliated with Paizo, and don't know what they're up to app-wise. But I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it :-)

Very cool. For those of us with the non-3G iPad, your app will definitely come in handy and the ability to bookmark would definitely make it worth the price for me.

I ended up buying it.
It's solid if nothing else. 5.99 felt a lot, but in the end, it's within an acceptable range of cost. As far as I can tell, this is SRD in iPhone format. But since it's an app, there is not a need to constantly wait for the pages to DL. It seems handy so far, but I haven't used in an actual game. Landscape view certainly fills nicely, but portrait is just a tad small. The obvious rules will easily be able to be found, but I am unsure if the less obvious ones can be easily found (like...lighting, encumberance, etc, things players and DM hate to bother looking up).
I'll keep people updated as I play with this more.
And I actually did encounter a solution yesterday where I wanted to have an iPad since there was no room for my laptop. We'll see if I break down a get an iPad (I hope not, I don't like that thing right now.)

New in this version:
- Bookmarking
- Improved menu page
- App remembers your last visited item
- OS requirement reduced from 3.1.3 to 3.1
- $1 cheaper. The app now costs $4.99
- More screenshots to see in iTunesThe PFR app really works well now, as an ingame reference. I used it playing Pathfinder two nights ago, and can give you my thoroughly unbiased testament that this app rocks :-D

Purchased. Very happy with it. Works as advertised and is quite handy.
Hopefully some success with this will encourage the author to create an iPad format version as well. The extra screen real estate would be great. I would be willing to even pay a little premium for the "HD" version.
Well done! Thanks for your work.

Hey Thomax. I just purchased the app. I have one quick suggestion. When browsing spells, could you throw in a "back to top" link at each letter's heading to take you back to the letter index.
I'm sure I'll think of more as I play with it.
EDIT: Scratch that. The big back button works fine for this...

Thomax, I had purchased your PFR iPhone app and I like it, it's a really handy way to have all that Pathfinder reference available anytime and wherever I need it.
Only one question: is there a way on the iPhone to make a search query through all that reference? If not, are you thinking of implementing a search mechanism? That would be "top" and awesome. Just imagine someone asking for that X rule and you give the answer the next split second :-)

Ah, yes, search would be cool :-)
So far I have only figured out half the solution (finding hits, but not sending the user to an interesting place). I need to ponder this some more. And in the meantime I think I'll give priority to making PFR run nicely on the iPad. And implementing other good suggestions like this one :)
