PFRPG Bookmarks all messed up

Customer Service

I don't know if it has come up (haven't been in on the boards really since Fireday morning), but the Bookmarks in the PFRPG are all messed up.

They often point to the wrong places, and there should be proper top-level bookmarks like "Classes" "Feats" and so on.

Yeah, the underlined links (like Unconscious in the Barbarian section) often lead nowhere, and things like "Designer Notes on Starting Hit Points" are filed under the Barbarian and also lead nowhere.

I'm more annoyed at the size of the images in the PDF. They make it so slow to scroll around in the document that it's really annoying. I tried to resample the images down to a more reasonable size, but the security settings won't let me. :p

I concur. I hope Paizo fixes this. Also, as noted, aside from the broken bookmarks, we have a lot of problems with broken links within the .pdf itself. So...

1. BOOKMARKS.

a. Please Create Bookmarks for each chapter, as well as the table of contents and index. Please place all subsequent bookmarks within/under those chapter-based bookmarks. It makes using bookmarks all the much easier.

b. Please fix the links between bookmarks and pages. (Classes are the glaring problem at this point, but I'm sure that there are others.)

c. Alternately, if you can, allow us - your customers - to modify/make bookmarks to our liking. (This is probably the easiest to do, if you are able and willing.)

2. LINKS.

This is likely a daunting task. But a great many links that I've come across in the .pdf are broken - either sending me to the wrong page or not sending me to a page at all. I noticed this especially when trying to link with various spells we used in Friday's game session.

As it is likely a daunting task, I'd prefer to see bookmarks fixed first and foremost. Thanks.

Made the mistake of buying the pdf, THEN coming on here to find out what was up...yes, they are horribly broken, and I'm kind of shocked it was rushed out in this condition.

Since the FIRST bookmark I clicked on was broken (sorcerer bloodline), and the second AND third, I would have to imagine that Paizo could have caught this using the very clever method of actually clicking on a few and seeing what happens before putting it out there.

I like the $10 price point...but I'd rather have paid $15 for a finished product. PDFs without working bookmarks are worth $0 to me. I guess this is an appeal to them to fix it quickly, but as noted above it seems like something they won't fix quickly.

Realizing Paizo's been around for a while, this was still sort of a "Big First" type of product - a chance to make a first impression...color me unimpressed.

EDIT: It seems like they're equally bad in the 'one file per' version, so I can't workaround it that way. Time to just put this away for a while and check in again in a few days.

Just as an fyi, keep in mind that Paizo does apparently have a system in place that let's them send you updates to your legally purchased PDFs. So most of those issues should be resolved once they get back from the Con.

Understood...just seems like quite a large screwup -- I get that they can post new versions like other publishers...it's just in the past when I've had a publisher send out new versions its for small adjustments, not because huge amounts of the functionality are hosed.

We did WAAAAAY more internal hyperlinking of this document than any PDF we've ever produced before, and we did almost all of it in the month leading up to Gen Con, which is the busiest, most chaotic time of the year for us even when we're not releasing the biggest print RPG product of the year.

That's not so much as an excuse as an explanation of how the problem crept in. Rest assured that we will meet first thing in the morning on Tuesday and we will resolve this issue as soon as humanly possible. If not for the fact that almost everyone is in Indiana right now, it would already be taken care of.

I apologize for the inconvenience, and I assure you that steps will be taken to make sure that this does not happen again.

Thanks for your patience!

Is this the right time and place to b~+$$ about the PRD (PSRD? PFRPGSRD? You know what I mean)?

It's mostly great, and I'm not complaining too much, but some "index areas" would be nice. Say, you have the spell lists page, and on top you have some general links taht send you directly to druid magic, or to sorwiz 7.

To be a bit more specific,
The sorceror and wizard's entry in the table of contents are wrong.
Some topics in the table of contents are capitalized while others aren't (half-elf, Half-orc)
There is also a topic '456.pdf'.

Could you also make a "pretty but memory-consuming backgrounds free" version as well, so we can load it on computers that are less than state-of-the-art?

Even my current computer doesn't run that PDF too fluently. It's not the newest PC (and due to be replaced), but it does handle stuff like Crysis well enough, so this is just brutal.

You way want to give the PRD a spin.

How will we know when/how the bookmark-corrected pdfs will become available?

You should get an email from Paizo stating that a new version of the file is ready in your downloads.

Has anyone got the above mentioned Email yet?
Is it fixed?

It seems really laggy and slow to scroll - and my computer kind of poops itself when I scroll about, load the PDF up or shut it down...

Is this because my laptop isnt superpowerd?

Could be. But my home PC isn't that bad - okay, it's 3 years old, but other than HD movies, it still handles stuff quite well, including some elaborate graphics-intensive games - and still gets panic attacks as soon as I open that file.

It's *probably* a question of memory. I don't have access to the PDF yet, so I don't know how big it is.

The first two questions are a) how much memory (RAM) is in you computer, and b) how big (file size) is the PDF?

Have you tried loading one of the chapters from the one file per chapter version to see if it performs more rapidly?

2gigs here. If you give me a week, I can tell you if 12 gigs help.

We're checking and rechecking the revisions as we speak; it's the #1 priority of several people.

However, we're not quite ready to roll it out; we've got some server improvements coming online in the next couple of days, and I need those to be in place before we begin inviting everyone to download it again. But it will be done soon.

My guess would be that you don't have enough memory; I'd suggest trying the one-file-per-chapter version.

A related inquiry: Errata.

I have heard that there's a downloadable errata file. Haven't found it. Perhaps an update/corrected .pdf could integrate the errata in as well. (Or is this asking way too much?)

Granted - it'll make the inconsistencies between my hard copy and my .pdf quite frustrating depending on which one I'm referencing ... but I'd still like to have one version that's completely up to date (and perhaps a downloadable list of errata to print and carry with my hardcopy). There - problem solved.

Still - errata? Include in the .pdf??

The most up-to-date errata can always be found at the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game resources page. The errata posted there as of today has been incorporated into the PDF already.
