Hi, Nightflier. Well, I'm here, and although I've trailed through this thread first, I'm unclear as to what the hard guidelines and theme to this campaign are.
This is from the recruitment thread:
I plan to start pbp campaign set in my homebrewed world. At the start it will be Ptolus-like, set in a crumbling, sprawling, decadent, corrupt city, with history that stretches thousands of years - a city that outlived several empires which ruled it, and continues to exist in some kind of urban unlife. This is a darker place than Ptolus. Some of city's most interesting locations are: Night Market, where you can haggle with Hags and deal with the Devils; Old Court, where vampires dance to the silent music and trade in blood and dreams; Slaveport, located at the confluence of two great rivers, where barges bearing fresh slave-meat from East and West unload their cargo; Nightingale Street, where you can find any and all pleasures known to man or dragon; Old Dungeon, located beneath ruins of Constabulary, filled with corpses when the Great Plague struck the city two hundred years ago; Troll Bridge, built by Trolls at the bequest of Lord Mayor hundred years ago, and in return they got the toll rights and land to build their slums across the Grat River; Lord's Castle, overlooking the rivers, but without any lord living in it for the last 90 years... you get the picture, I hope.
Number of players is unlimited and players are encouraged to create gestalt characters. Starting level would be 1st, but players can create characters with racial levels, which would not count towards the level advancement. For example: Onmarh the Troll decides to enroll in the Constabulary. His level adjustment would be +5. He takes one level of fighter, so his ecl is 6. To advance to the second level of Fighter he would need to amass enough experience to reach ecl 7, right? Wrong. His racial levels do not count. Onmarh would need normal amount of xp for reaching second level. I plan to restrict starting ecl to +4.

So, +4 LA 1st-level gestalt characters? That is suitably impressive :P
How on earth did a lantern archon leave Celestia though? They're tied to the plane, just like petitioners are to various gods' realms.
Klick on Leaf Hisical's avatar. There's a background. And Lanterns can become familiars, so why couldn't they leave Celestia?

So, hey, first and foremost; I appreciate the invite, nightflier! Next, I'd like to preface my interest with an admission that I am very far from familiar with most of the variant rulesets and such floating around out there for D&D. So I might be a little slow on CGen but I am a quick learner. If you're looking for players that are more accustomed to this sort of play-style I understand and will continue to look for a game.
If not, I have questions!
First, I don't know what a gestalt character is (some sort of mixture of classes, I'd assume, based on diction alone and looking at charsheets) and don't own UA. I may have a TT friend that I can borrow it from in the near future however, if it's necessary.
B) It's PFRPG Beta and 3.5 supplements (for templates, monstrous races, whatever)?
3 - Is any particular role lacking in the party?
Lastly: why do elves need to take so many vacations? Because they're always in tents!
If we're willing to be patient, I'd love to give it all a shot. The setting looks intriguing and the player characters all seem like alot of fun so far.
((Intense. Ha ha. I kill me.))

![]() |

Gestalt means that you take the best of each class you're playing. Here's a link that you may find useful: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/UA:Building_a_Gestalt_Character
Anyway, play whatever you like. The game uses Pathfinder Beta and all the other splatbooks out there. So, your only limit is your own imagination. There are character creation rules at the beginning of this thread.

Talk about options. And here I'm coming from a table-top setting where I usually just end up playing what nobody else wanted to play!
I'm still looking at all the class combinations and LA-appropriate race/template options. How flexible are you with, say, half-fiend alignment? If the concept fits and I can justify a neutral alignment is that kosher or are we sticking to always-evil as described?

No. You can play any alignment that you want. In fact, Cambions are known to sometimes go rogue and become neutral or even good. ALu-fiends as well, so... go right ahead.

Aehrick Oddskeeper |

Aehrick is starting to take shape as a concept. Half-Celestial Human Fighter/Cleric of Calistria (or like deity).
Brief, preliminary character sketch:
The fighting was less than frequent and he found himself running games of chance for the other troops (Profession/Gambler, also explains the taken surname) to keep them entertained. It was always easy enough to make friends but worked hard to keep himself at a distance, worried that someone would make some insight into his... touched nature.
I was thinking he'd find himself in Kaledun after the town he'd helped defended (as part of the militia) was wiped out by X monster, Y magical catastrophe or Z plague. Planning on going True Neutral but have subtle hints of his celestial parentage color his cleric abilities (channeling positive energy, for example).
If it's agreeable I'd like to tone down the physical manifestations of his parentage (give up the Wings and related Flying ability, primarily) and mayhaps just say in times of extreme duress his eyes glow, et cetera (as per the avatar)-- but otherwise he rolls incognito.
Any feedback is appreciated!
I'd also like to work something out between Leaf and Aehrick's background (OOC knowledge as to intertwined fates or some such) if Leaf's player is amenable to such a thing. :)
Rolled stats are STR 15, DEX 12, CON 11, INT 13, WIS 16, CHA 11 unmodified by race or template.
Edit: How do folks input the nifty formatting into their character profiles? Is it a template I can find somewhere or do you do it all manually?

I'm still in. Sorry about dropping out for the last few days. Had to go into hospital and have my leg pinned. Now I have 4 screws and a centimetre thick titanium rod holding my tibia together, also lots of staples. But I am back home now so am able to post again.
I thought it would be something like that. I hope that you'll recover fast and well.

It is manual, but I have made .txt file that holds the basic structure - if you'd like a copy you can get in touch at my username at hotmail dot com.

Okay. So, most if not all players will continue with the game. That's good to hear. I realize that real life can constrain gaming, so I propose that we limit ourselves to one post a day during the next few days. I will probably post more, because I work from home, so I'm always in the vicinity of computer. Just to remind you, the game can continue in several directions: You can 1) search for the missing girl and check out the sewers; 2) try to find the barmaid that tried to poison you (interesting fact: innkeeper says he doesn't employ any barmaids, but other patrons haven't notices anything unusual, judged by their reactions); or, 3) you can look for Valentine's brother, Severian.

Aehrick Oddskeeper |

Ugh. So sleepy.
So I got caught up in the character and didn't realize I should've been asleep three hours ago. No biggy.
Night, it's not all done but the broad strokes are definitely there. I'd encourage you to have a look at the background portion and give me any feedback or pointers you might have. I'd really appreciate it. If the stats seem different they are (a bit)-- I swapped Dex and Int so that Dexterity had the odd number. I don't see myself putting a point into Intelligence down the road.
Calixy: Thanks! Actually, I'm just a dork and didn't realize that the Profile automatically setup a left-alignment table for the statblock and your "About <Character>" stuff automatically formatted to its right. So it all worked out. I ended up going with a layout similar to what Paizo uses for their NPC entries on the adventure paths.
Sorry to hear you got hurt, Zissaren. I'm nursing a banged-up knee from roller hockey and a gnarly bruise and road rash is bad enough for me. Hope you mend up quickly.

Yep, I think the general consensus seems to be find the girl, then figure out who's responsible for the poisoning. (Luff has a pretty good idea of who is behind it, given the reaction the 'barmaid' had to his earlier question - but that can wait.)

Ouch sounds painful. About 6 inches of my left arm is titanium, I know how you feel, hang in there.

Aehrick, one thing I would change is the part in which you travel to Kaledun. Calistria is not worshiped in my world, so you would have to be traveler from Golarion. That is not a problem per se. Jack Ketch is from Golarion as well. But you should mention that in your background.
To all players: I forgot who got bonus background feat, so those of you who haven't - announce yourselves. At this point you can choose to receive bonus skill instead of feat, btw.

![]() |

Al got the bonus familiar advancement, but Luff's not had a bonus (I don't really think he needs it though, I had enough trouble choosing the feats he's already got.)
Just a quick question about the IC thread, is it just Al, Arathalia and Zissaren that are too large to fit down? Can Escape Artist be used to squeeze through?

The grate is foot wide, so Al and Zissaren can not pass for sure. Luff's wings are to large and sensitive for him to squeeze through. But, when I think about it, perhaps Arathalia can pass as well.
Luff realy deserves a bonus. He is a great character. Perhaps he can trade something with Svetlana to gain Knowledge (Kaledun) as bonus skill? If you can fit that in your background, the skill is yours.

If you have an analogous deity I can work with that or I can figure out some plane-hopping explanation. I saw the five deities of your pantheon listed earlier in the thread but there didn't seem to be anything appropriate.
@Smell/Leaf: I'm open to whatever you might want to do. Simple enough to say that it's more than a coincidence that they both arrive at roughly the same time. Maybe the archon wasn't being punished but tasked-- and it looks like we both went with a 'against the grain' type of concept so far as what is expected of them.
Maybe they're to help eachother live up to their potential-- to, say, earn their wings?

I'm gonna try to find some time to elaborate on the gods. Luck is domain of Luna, Lust and Fertility are domains of Gaia. Luna is often called Sister of Thieves and as such often opposes Sol, who is patron of Law and Commerce, among other things. There are only five human gods, but each of them has many aspects.

Sounds good. 'Against the grain' is a great way to quickly build personality.

I figured those were just the five main dieties in the city and have been happily inventing/borrowing my own.
They are Elder Gods. They are tied to planet itself and they are not dependent on worshipers for power. They tend to appear in many guises and differently to different civilizations. There are many other distinct gods, but they are the gods of humanoids, Elves, Dwarfs etc. Some humans worship one of the myriad of "small gods". Those are gods of dell and glen, of forests and springs. For instance, there is a god of River Grath. He is known as Grath Wetbeard. On the surface of the river he is greater god, but his power is almost nonexistent at the distance of 5 miles from the river coast. I hope this is helpful.

You know. I've read some books in my time and worshiping Elder Gods never turns out well!

Aaalright. It should all be done, pending your approval, Night. I went ahead and revised the background in several places-- expanding here, tweaking there.
If anything looks to be wrong or missing let me know. I worked from pencil-and-paper and then transferred it the character sheet here.

I guess rather than anything magical, the knowledge could be a result of in depth conversations they have while he's performing his chores.

Yes, it can. But the problem is how to explain why he haven't used his knowledge of the city so far. But that is small enough mater so it can be easily ignored, I think. You can add Knowledge (Kaledun) as bonus skill, if you don't want feat instead.

It could wait until next level, that way it can be a gradual learning curve - until then it can work like it has done so far, with you giving out relevant information through conversations with Svetlana.

I'd like to come in assuming Aehrick was sitting in the common room during all the poison/near death shenanigans. If he was asked, would the owner explain who the individuals were (generally)? Would the owner then confirm that there would be some reward for the troupe if they were successful in retrieving his grandchild?

No, he would not. He would be to afraid to talk about that to stranger. The group has proven itself to him when they confronted the guards, but you are unknown quantity. If you can come up with some tie to Leaf, you can join the rest of the group right on the street next to the sewer drain.

Aehrick Oddskeeper |

Alright, Smell, let's figure this bad boy out! My fingers is all a'jitter for wont of posting.
I'd like to play out the bulk of the characters interactions and not have that in the background as to avoid generating a need to constantly confirm what would've happened in OOC (and possibly slowing down IC progression). How long would you say Leaf has been in the city? I'd had it in my head that Aehrick had been around for maybe a day or two-- possibly three. Enough that he could stretch his legs and get a decent idea for how things are laid out in a relatively small vicinity but not long enough to become any sort of expert.
Perhaps the two kept bumping into one another with unusual frequency? Passing in the street, catching sight of one or the other on the other side of a crowded market. Something enough that suspicions are aroused but not dramatic enough to warranty any drastic action-- until now.
It looks like the part is going to have to find an alternate means of ingress to the sewers. What if Aehrick was nearby (for whatever reason) and the two just decided that this sort of thing was happening for a reason? Aehrick isn't obviously celestial-blooded to a layman, but mayhaps Leaf gets a sense of it just because he's spent the better part of his 'life' as an archon around them?
I am flexible and open to input. Let us, as they say, 'do this.'
Smell, if you prefer, we can start using the Spoilers to discuss it but I'm not really Captain Sekrits so it doesn't matter to me.

smell of orange blossoms in the |

no, yes, lets do it here. if either of us forgets to check here, maybe a reminder on the game thread.
So, Leaf's been in the city for 38 days now after apparently being booted out of Celestia.
He's formal, a little bit autistic, not 'with the program' or really aware there is a program.
He's an Archon and LG, but he's got the infernal bloodline and some sort of diabolical pact powering his Warlock skills. When he bothers to think about it, Leaf is convinced there are pieces of more than one soul jammed together inside of him.
Interacting with him might involve:taking pity on him; having been casually tasked ('hey, if you run into this idiot Archon...')to help him; being more aware of whatever plot made him what he is; just attracted to an 'obviously' friendly 'face'.
I'd appreciate it if the initiative came from your character - I'm trying to keep Leaf low-key: part of the supporting cast. Partly because I'm having fun figuring out his personality as we go and partly because I think he's got some abilities that would be annoying for everyone if I used them all of the time.
Sorry if this is extra-convoluted...typing while prepping dinner..

Aehrick Oddskeeper |

Fair enough.
So Aehrick arrived at night, in an alley, and the first thing he sees after chasing off street urchins and beggars is a glowing lantern archon zipping by the mouth of the alley. After a brief moment getting his bearings, he moves towards finding a transient place of residence and, as he enters the inn to make arrangements, notes another lantern archon collecting debris into some kind of wasp-style nest against the side of a building (or whatever).
The next day, after he's left to go about his business, Aehrick notes Leaf at the end of a street some blocks making casual conversation with a dog (whether it's a sentient blink dog or your everyday stray doesn't matter). And so on...
So-- the type of thing to where Aehrick might be under the impression initially that there are just tons of lantern archons flitting about the community but ultimately comes to realization that it's just Leaf and they keep bumping into one another-- seemingly by chance.
When your patron deity is a goddess of Luck you tend to take notice.
If this works for you I'll just pop into scene when it seems appropriate and strike up conversation/introductions. You can be reactionary as you see fit from there. :)

Aehrick Oddskeeper |

I am flexible wrt everything about Leaf, so if you have any plan, grand or otherwise, I can help with then I would be delighted to (help).
I leave the grand plans to the DM! I don't like setting out anything too firmly because I like to see how the character develops within the game. I greatly appreciate the help, though, and I hope it ends up being fun for everyone.
