I need some help, wondering how people handled this.

My PC's made it into the Vivified Labyrinth last night and on the first rotation ran into Sivit's Symbol of Insanity. One of the five PC's made the save but now had 4 allies under a permenant confusion spell. They do not know how the dungeon works and seem stuck. I rule zeroed the Symbol of Insanity and reviewed the remaining symbols in the module. They do not seem as bad.

My PC's now seem at loss how to proceed. The were reduced to trying to summon fodder via Pilt's Rod of Wonder to clear a path for them. This was fun for awhile but after the second flesh to stone/stone to flesh combo I could see this was not working. Should I simply remove the remaining symbols per the modules sidebar? Did others find these fun?

Thanks in advance!

My group just ran through this. They had 3 Dispel Magics, 2 on a wand and one in the head of the cleric. They shut down the first few Symbol's they came across (having made some saves and taken some ill effects). That being said, they avoided the insanity symbol with a lot of luck. The rogue noticed the trap and avoided it. The cleric then stepped up, made a nice will save and dispelled it. The Symbols were a bit of a pain, but the party really enjoyed them as a challenge they haven't dealt with before. That being said a bunch of poor saves and that place is going to get out of control in a hurry. There is nothing saying you couldn't move some of them. If they need a break from them just put them elsewhere. Also, you may have to figure out how to buy them some time to rest and get some Dispel's. A side note also. The Sorcerer in my group has a longbow with the Dispelling property on it. Allows him 3/day a +10 Dispelling. He figured out that if he cast true strike then closed his eyes he could avoid the save, and still have a good chance of hitting the symbol. Miss chance still, but it was clever. Unfortunately they got what they were looking for and booked out before running into another Symbol.

My PCs hit all the symbols, but mostly made their saving throws. The Symbol of Insanity was the only one of the symbols that gave my players any trouble. The party tank (fgt/dwarven defender) managed to get hit by that, but I quickly realized, were I to leave the Symbol as written, I would quickly end up with a TPK. They were in confined areas; the tank can deal out an unreasonable amount of damage, followed by Great Cleave; and it was only a matter of time before the dice told him to attack the nearest creature. I also rule zeroed it, mostly because getting rid of the confusion spell would be prohibitively expensive, but also because a permanent confusion spell is about as fun for the player as black lung disease.

Instead of a permanent confusion spell, the afflicted character lost his ability to speak anything but gibberish, but retained the ability to otherwise act normally. The player gets to be effective but only speaks using random noises. Now, five sessions later, it's provided for some great RP opportunities, and none of the players are whining, which is always a good thing.

That sounds great. I am often of the opinion that if it works it's not broken. The permanent Confusion was a concern of mine as well. Luckily for my group that was the first one the Rogue spotted and the Cleric then walked in and dispelled. No one but the cleric had to make the save and he aced it.
