Updated!
While Tier 1 slots are still full (and the waiting list is growing) we still desperately need help on Friday and Saturday night for the Betrayal in Absalom event. If you can spare 4 or 8 hours of your time and want some Paizo swag in exchange, volunteer for these two slots! This event is going to be good fun and you can help me, Tim Hitchcock, and Adam Daigle run this thing both nights.
Tell your friends! Tell your gaming group! We still need volunteers!

I just don't have the con time for tier 1'ing it - I'm leaving Saturday night to be home for our anniversary on Sunday. Curse you for moving weeks when you went to Indy, GenCon!
I'll be volunteering for 4 of my 6 slots at the convention, looks like. The afternoon slot on Saturday is too close to flight time to do more than wander :)

it's really interresting to be there but i'm on work and like others i'm on the other side of the atlantic. I'd like to be there with you, but it wouldn't be possible but if you do some event in europe it would be fun, and easy. well i remenber that there is an event in Paris if i remenber well it's the Toy show, there are all the french RPG Producer or translator. so there it would be very easy ti be there.
hope to have the same event in europe.

So Josh, is there a reward system in place for judges that judge an event but havent played it yet? (ie, awarded the XP, no faction prestige or items?)
A year ago when I discussed this with you in person, you said they had not finalized this yet. I havent seen on the official boards any change to this.
Having to 'eat' episodes doesn't encourage me to judge for Paizo or any event before I play them as I can not keep up with any of my friends also playing Pathfinder. I was hoping they'd addressed this by now. (and maybe they have and I just missed it)
Thanks,
Mark Lewis

Mark, no such system exists yet so if you eat it, you can't play it and you get no reward. Josh has said that something is in the works but I don't think anyone expects to see any changes until GenCon--at which point if you're judging PFS you've already eaten the scenario. With the character rebuild he could make the 'eating reward' retroactive, but I don't want to jinx this by speculating about it. Lots of us are eating scenarios to run events at GenCon. If we didn't then Josh couldn't provide many tables per slot because it would just be him and his co-workers & contributors GMing.

Which is why this year I didnt volunteer at all. I was a tier 1, judged every slot that was offered of Pathfinder last year at GenCon judge. (2008)
Josh mentioned something was being discussed a year ago at GenCon but that they didnt favor (at that time) any system to reward the judges. LG did a similar thing and over time there was a shortage of judges.
I had hoped that by now something had already been worked out as Pathfinder will lose quality judges due to their being no way to play Pathfinder and get 'behind' your friends that you play with back home.
I like Pathfinder (a lot) and I want to see it succeed. I am however unwilling from this point forward to 'eat' episodes. So I do hope they bring this one to the front burner and come up with a suitable resolution that fits. The easiest being a simple you gain XP, and maybe 1/2 gold for the episode but not items or faction prestige? Something along those lines should prevent it from being abused and yet allow faithful judges to at least play with their friends in episodes where they arent judging.
I would encourage Pathfinder developers to look at what LFR is doing. (and I dont think their system is perfect) They have though at least realized penalizing people for running their game isnt a policy they want to move forward with.

Mark, I agree with you and I think you made some good points. I haven't reached the point you have yet where I'm unwilling to eat another scenario, though. One saving grace is the low PC retirement level, which ensures that even if my local group out-distances me, I'll catch them the second time around.

There will be GM rewards built into v2.0 of the rules, which it looks like will be the next rules update for the Society. GMs will get some sort of credit for their PCs for running a scenario, though I don't yet have details I can share.
Is 2.0 releasing with the PF RPG changeover?

Very much tempted, interested, and willing.... unfortunately my bank account puts me in shackles, heavy adamantide shackles...magical enhanced ... or at least enhanced by a threatened lay off...
well, maybe sometime in the future. Give me a call when something like that is planed in Europe (or better Germany), though not in 2009... everything regarding my job and my (future paycheck) are to uncertain right now. For 2009... anything outside of Germany is just to expensive. But I will make to any future convention before December 21st 2012. ;)) And that is a promise.

Josh,
In addition to getting the advanced photo copy; will we be able to have access to the Gen Con version of the PFS Guidelines so we can be upto date with that as well? The thought occured to me as I was looking over the guidelines today that they would be getting updated as well and would be nice to know what changes to look for. Wasn't sure if they would release before Gen Con or at the convention so thought I better ask.

When should we expect to get the NDA and the photocopied rules? I'm not asking to have any sort of rush because I know the amount of work you folks are under.
I'm going out of the country in June for a week and I don't want either hold up my NDA from being completed or have a copy of the rules sitting on my doorstep unsecured. (I doubt the guys next door are gamers, but i also don't want it left in the rain.)
Just looking for dates, not promises. Thanks in advance.

Maybe I am not seeing it, but i was just at the Origins website and saw a list of Exhibitors as of June 5. There were no listing for Paizo having a booth. is that a misprint?
thanks
James, this is the GenCon thread BTW--but you are correct, Paizo will not have a booth in the vendor hall at Origins. It is simply too expensive and they haven't covered their costs the last few years. Josh explains it all here. There will be Pathfinder Society events at Origins, but they are being organized by "The Gathering", a cooperative of RPG organizers.

Here's a good question.
Will Volunteers need to purchase the scenarios they will be running, or will we be provided a copy before the game to go over?
Matt,
I know that Josh said the scenarios for Origins should be available this week, but the way they are delivered to the GMs is different based on the convention:
At Origins a host website called Con Support is being used. If you are confirmed as a GM on Con Support you should be able to download the scenarios from that website whenever they are added to it by Josh.
At GenCon, it has been my experience that the organizer will e-mail the scenarios direct to the GM. Josh hasn't assigned GMs to scenarios yet--I'm sure he's got his hands full with the final preparations for PAIZOCON this week.
I do not represent Paizo, I'm just a guy with an OCD habit of trying to answer questions that weren't directed at him. Sometimes I feel like Martin Prince from The Simpsons.
I don't think that you will be expected to purchase the scenarios if you volunteered to GM for Pathfinder Society. I would hope that you receive the scenarios well before the game needs to be run. I'm confident that all the GMs will get their scenarios with lots of time to prep. I hope that this helped.

Thanks Doug Doug! It's my first time volunteering, so I wasn't sure how it was done. Hopefully everything's the same.
Now get back in your tunnel and fill those creepy beasties with your air pump... ;)

Here's a question for those who have volunteered to GM for Pathfinder Society at GenCon before: as a tier 1 GM, how many different scenarios am I likely to be running? I think I see seven scenarios offered. Will I be playing the same one eight times, or will I be playing two or three?
Thanks ahead of time,
BrOp

On a similar note to BrOp's question, I'd like to play some of the PFS mods I'm NOT running. If that is even possible.
I'm a tier 2 GM myself but I'm not sure what to expect as this is my first time volunteering. Is it unreasonable to expect to actually play PFS mods at gencon if you're GMing and if so, do you just jump into a game if there's space or do you need to sign up for a game once you know what mods you'll be expected to judge?

Preface: I cannot address how Paizo/Josh is going to handle this, and I don't represent either in any way, shape, or form.
That said, in my experience GMs are usually in the right place at the right time, and familiar enough with the mustering process, that getting into games during free slots, with generic tickets, is usually not a problem. You're further helped by the fact that you are a single player, meaning whoever is doing the mustering can plug you in almost anywhere. In my experience is most often the groups who insist on trying to play together with generics that end up sitting slots out.
It can also help to play a healer. :)

Excellent question.... I'm hoping to get a look at the adventures early enough to perhaps bring some props like papercraft buildings or some such.

We'll have the copies mailed out well in advance. The book has to be done in the next couple of weeks.
Josh, you guys still mailing these? or have you decided yet that the shipping will be too much for you guys to eat?
If you are still mailing them... How much longer until we see them and the scenerios for the Con?

Josh the reason why I am asking the above is that you guys are quickly approaching the time period that I would not get the print up until after GenCon, due to the time it takes for Standard mail to get from you guys to me through USPS and miltary postal. On avaerage it takes about 45 days to get to me, rarely shorter and sometimes longer.
Priority mail take a week or 2 to get to me.
