Female Halfling Rogue 3

"Erizi get the Spiders not the Gnoll" Norn yells from the wall she has backed into.

Shimei grabs his bow. "Dog! Wake up! NOMBIR!"

Flavor only. Still waiting to see what Zaid does. I don't think he's got a silver bullet for this, but I'm hoping.

Nice, Scranford. Given the confused situation, blaming the gnoll makes a kind of twisted sense in character. Of course this isn't going to help our situation overall. Wish I had thought of it.

FW, Erizi brings back the question of Rova and Felliped. Also how big is the swarm and how fast? I'm wondering about running through it to get outside. Is standing going to count as an action?

Male Human Cleric 2

Assuming Nombir hears Shimei's call, he will get away from the swarm as best he can etc.

The Exchange

Does Nombir go inside further? or outside with Livvy and Erizi.

Felliped hardly moves at all. He was very tired so that sleep must be a deep one. Rova staggers up to his feet and sways at the sight, pulling out a small sized oil flask from his belt. "Burn them! Desert swarms are bad!"

The Exchange

I'll pull all the actions together once Nombir has stated his direction.

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

Zaid wakes up and sees the spiders.

Zaid has no silver bullet for this swarm. in fact since he has no memorized spells, he is just about useless. I think the burning hands is the best we've got.

"I have nothing that will burn them!" Zaid sorely regrets not picking up a flask of oil, or alchemists fire if he could afford it, and backs up more into the cave.

BTW I am back from vacation. I don't remember if I told you all I was leaving (I did in my other games for sure), but if I somehow missed this one, I apologize.

Dog starts to bark and backs further into the cave. Shimei draws his flint and iron and moves toward Rova. "Pour it out! I'll light it."

From outside, the others hear, "I can burn them again, but you need to be ready to run out in case they survive! Gather what you cannot leave behind!"

Erizi stops dead in his tracks at the mention of spiders. He then 'realizes' that Nombir is covered in spiders. What vile gnoll trick is this?

"Nombir run to me", Erizi shouts. "The gnoll sorcerer has tricked you". "And look he is trying to set fire to Shimei and Dog". "I told you he was evil".

Erizi is doing a lot of gesturing and pointing, and is obviously upset, but is also hesitant to approach that many spiders".

"Here dog, Here"! "Shimei come out of there, we must unite against this evildoer".

Female Halfling Rogue 3

Norn simply shakes her head in mild disbelief at Erizi before trying to edge to the exit.

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

Not wanting to be left in the cave by himself, Zaid edges along behind Norn.

Oh, it's good to have everyone back after the holidays. I've missed you guys.

We seem to be going a bit free-form, so I'm not sure if it's Livvy's next go yet or not. If it is:

Spoiler:
She will move to the edge of the swarm and burn as much of the swarm as possible, hopefully avoiding her friends -- but burning the swarm is more important.

Burning Hands damage, Reflex DC 14 for half: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 2 = 7

The Exchange

In the chaos that ensues with Rova and Shimei preparing to light the oil, Livvy finishes the swarm in one sheet of flames. The cave goes quiet.

Shimei stoops to light the oil just as Livvy's sheet of flame showers a across the swarm. Shimei reels back, throwing his arms across his face.

"May a hundred ravens feast on your beating heart! You could have burned me!"

Shimei looks at the gnoll for solidarity, after all they were side by side. Then he realizes he's looking at a gnoll for support.

"I'll see if there are any more of these vermin around. Dog, stay." Shimei pushes his way out of the cave.

Dog circles his spot on the cave floor and lies down, looking at Norn with arched brows.

Shimei of Merraketh wrote:
"May a hundred ravens feast on your beating heart! You could have burned me!"

Livvy sticks out her tongue. "Indeed, I could have. But I didn't. And if I had, it would have been a small price to pay to avoid being eaten by spiders one little nibble at a time."

She crosses her arms across her tiny chest and stands her ground defiantly as Shimei moves past her out of the cave.

"Unfortunately, that's all the energy I have for such magic for a while. If more spiders come, we need to have an alternative. Perhaps we do need to have a fire... Can we put one far enough back in the cave so that it is not visible from afar?"

She looks at the depth of the cave and at the others for suggestions.

Survival 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

Male Human Cleric 2

Nombir is a bit unsteady on his feet, but mumbles "are they dead?"

The Exchange

Rova puts his oil away in response to Shimei. He smiles at Livvy a big grin and almost purrs, "good magicks for pup, ho ho ho. Crispy dead."

With that roll it is possible that a fire could be masked deep in the cave.

Female Halfling Rogue 3

Norn keeps an eye on Erizi to see how he reacts to the situation.

After ensuring that nobody is going to die, Erizi walks boldly up to the gnoll (He refuses to give him a name. If his trusted companion 'dog' doesn't have a name this one certainly doesn't deserve one), and pokes a stout finger into his chest.

"You might have the rest of them fooled, but I know what you're up to". "I've got my eye on you".

He then scornfully looks at each of his party members and returns to his post in the forest outside, mumbling over his shoulder as he goes.

"Try to not get killed".

She crosses her arms across her tiny chest and stands her ground defiantly as Shimei moves past her out of the cave.

...

Shimei steps around her and keeps on going. Once clear of the cave he does a quick sweep of the area about 100 yards out from the cave.

Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Survival 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

The sweep provides time for the adrenaline to wear off and for his mind to clear. When he returns to the cave he pulls Livvy aside. "Sorry, little one, I should not have yelled at you. The labors of the day and terror of the night set me on edge. You did well." A long pause..... "Thank you."

Shimei wraps himself up in his traveling robe and couches himself next to dog again. He is determined to get every bit of sleep possible before it is his shift.

The stony look on her face softens into a shy smile when she realizes Shimei's not here to yell at her again.

She whispers, "I was so scared," her voice rising to a more normal tone as it speeds up, "I knew in my heart that my flame was the right weapon, but it takes a moment to bring it to hand, and they had gotten into the cave and the first flames didn't kill enough of them and and ... and then I had it, I was in the right place to miss everyone else, and it worked."

Eyes bright even in the starlight, she looks at Shimei and repeats it with intensity, "It worked! No one else was burned and the spiders were gone!"

Calming back down, she puts a tiny hand on the scout's. "You did no harm in raising your voice. I did not want to harm you or the others, but if I had to do a little harm to avoid the spiders doing greater harm... I had already made up my mind. You're welcome - because I believe you would do the same for me. Get some more sleep, my friend."

Livvy's pretty keyed up after the spider invasion. She doesn't sit down for the rest of her shift, shifting from foot to foot in her hiding place in the shadows.

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

"You did very well indeed Livvy," Zaid says, "and now hopefully we can get some rest."

He lays down again to sleep after everything settles down.

The Exchange

Cowed by the words of the pack leader, Rova slinks back to his bed blanket and curls into a ball, watching Erizi with one eye to make sure he does not upset the warrior further.

Eventually when the adrenalin wears off, everyone can get back to sleep. One by one people drift off.

Feel free to add in anything extra, I just want to move things along a bit. Erizi there is no forest, just bare rocks, and the odd scrubland bush tumbling about under the stars. Your camp is only about 40 feet away out of sight of the entrance but within earshot.

The quiet of the valley is broken by the occasional mournful howl of a jackal or desert wolf, yapping at the moon. Otherwise Livvy and Nombir soon find themselves alone again. The watch finishes uneventfully. Then Rova, Shimei and Norn take over and that is slow and quiet.

Erizi and Zaid are due up last.

Who fetches Erizi? and wakes Zaid? Perception checks from everyone bar Livvy and Nombir also.

Female Halfling Rogue 3

Norn goes to fetch Erizi

Perception

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Shimei will wait until Norn is back with Erizi before going to get Zaid.

He'll quietly address the mage, "Zaid, there has been little rancor between you and Erizi. Remind him that he is our eyes and ears now, especially while you study your book. If anything happens on your watch wake Norn, and I first. Livvy and Nombir must rest if possible."

Zaid nods at Shimei then approaches Eziri. "Ezirir my friend, you must be extra watchful this shift, essentially watching for two. I must study my book of spells for an hour or so and record yesterdays events in my journal, so my attention might be somewhat lacking."

Zaid then starts memorizing spells.

Well the dice are definitely against you guys.

As Zaid is nearly finished with his magical preparations, Erizi is shocked to see a gnoll rise up before him through very tired eyes. He hardly notices that this is part of a pack as the gnolls unleash a hail of javelins from close cover, only fifty feet from the entrance.

Now is the time to explain that I rolled 2 random encounters for the night with very low rolls and no chance of me fudging it at all. No one else had had enough rest for their magicks to be re-energised. Zaid can learn one less spell than max. for this fight.

Four javelins at Erizi in cover but flat-footed 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7, possible damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9, Second javelin 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5, possible damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8, Third javelin 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16, possible damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9, Fourth javelin 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2, possible damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

The hail of missiles clatter around the entrance.

Initiatives and actions, I have work tonight so I may not post again today. Cheers.

Zaid and Erizi are on watch, everyone else is asleep. Wait for it, Norn. Far too keen that halfling, far too keen.

Erizi fully awake not bellows at the top of his lungs.

"We have been betrayed". "Awake everyone...the dog faces attack"!

Erizi will move forward to attempt to engage the nearest gnoll.

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14 Tempest Attack / Raging

2d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 4) + 9 = 14 Tempest damage / Raging.

Oh yeah, Initiative

Initiative

1d20 ⇒ 10

S'okay. Perversely enough, I like random encounters and this sort of thing.

Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Dog stirs and growls softly, jostling Shimei. The desert son hisses,"Shhh. Sleep, dog." Then the clatter of javelins against the stone cavemouth wakes him fully.

He gropes for his bow and quiver and shambles toward the mouth of the cave.

"What is it?"

Getting up and equipped, and moving. If you'll give me an attack too, I'll certainly take it.

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

"Will this night never end?"

Zaid steps up and attempts to get into position to cast color spray without catching Eziri in it.

Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

At the sound of the javelins clattering to the ground, Livvy murmurs, "Uh-oh, you knocked over the woodpile! Now we have to pick them all up again!"

With Erizi's shout, she comes to, but it still takes her a moment to shake the dream and realize where she is and the danger they must be in.

No first-level spells, but cantrips are still available, yes?

The Exchange

Gnolls Initiative 1d20 ⇒ 9 and 1d20 ⇒ 18, Hyena 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

The gnolls are in close cover, that means no one can charge them. Erizi can reach one or two by running round or over the low rocks. Also they are at fifty foot range.

Zaid is inside the cave, that is about ten foot further in from the entrance. He can run out towards Erizi, but will not be close enough to cast. Decide whether you wish to follow him outside.

As Shimei indicated everyone else is probably getting up, getting gear and moving to the entrance in the first round.

Round 1
[ooc]Erizi 24 (runs forwards)
Hyena 18
Gnolls (2) 18
Zaid 12 (may follow)
Nombir 10
Gnolls (2) 9
Norn 7
Shimei 7
Livvy 3

Female Halfling Rogue 3

Norn will just go with her already mentioned actions.

Since Erizi can't reach them this round (Wasn't sure how far away they were, he would attempt to pick up one of the javelins on the move, and throw it moving however far he can from there. If he can't he'll just move

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 Acrobatics?

and throw is +5 instead of +10, as he wouldn't rage until in close combat.

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

Zaid follows behind Eziri, trying to use him for cover.

The Exchange

Erizi picks up a javelin and wings it at the rocks, but it bounces off, then he dodges forwards left and right forty feet.

Then a hyena charges out from between the largest two rocks and takes a bite at the wildman.

Hyena bite 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Another gnoll comes out at Erizi too but he is busy juggling his javelins and old scimitar as he approaches.

Erizi Perception DC13

Spoiler:
Erizi hears the gnollish words that sounds like "ugru noo." come from behind the rocks.

When Zaid breaks from the entrance after Erizi, two more javelins fly out from the left of the large rocks.

First javelin at Zaid 1d20 ⇒ 16, Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6, Second javelin at Zaid 1d20 ⇒ 19, Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Everyone else clusters around the entrance.

Round Two, Erizi is up.

2d6 + 9 ⇒ (5, 5) + 9 = 19 Earthbreaker damage

A quick step to one side of the hyena and Erizi is ready with the greathammer. The gnoll manages to get his scimitar up just in time for Tempest to break through the weapon and smash his face into a bloody pulp.

Erizi

Spoiler:
Should have checked your languages, the words sound like "go for pack."

The hyena continues its attack at Erizi, ten foot from the gap in the rocks.

Bite at Erizi 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2, miss chance (01-20) 1d100 ⇒ 20

Anyone who doesn't have darkvision needs to roll for a miss chance of 20% thanks to the shadows. Just remembered, me naff.

The other gnolls have disappeared from view.

The Exchange

Zaid and Nombir to act.

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

Zaid retreats back into the cave.

"That was foolish." he says as he pulls a javelin out of himself.

The Exchange

Erizi isn't the wait and give cover kind of a guy, is he?

Normally he would be more strategic, but he is trying to redeem himself in front of his "pack". Plus he thinks their prisoner is somehow behind this...but for the most part...no Melee is his thing...Plus I guess I'm having a little trouble understanding where everybody is in this combat anyway. Electronic mapmaking is beyond me at this point, which is why I don't run any games on here. I was under the assumption that Erizi was 30' away from the cave entrance under cover, and the attackers were between Erizi and the cave...so he was running to the rescue.
