Tripping with Pathfinder

General Discussion (Prerelease)

First I will start by stating that I do not have the pdf or the beta hardcopy by me at the moment (im at work).

My party monk has the tripping feet. If I remember correctly, tripping in pathfinder was nerfed.

If a monk with 5 flurry of blow attacks decided to make a trip attempt, he would only get one attack as tripping is a standard action (it is right?). Also, standing up no longer provokes an AOO under pathfinder (or is this wrong).

So my question is, is there a real benefit to a monk tripping as opposed to just whacking on a baddy 5 times instead?

I appologize in advance for not having the rule on me when posting this.

In PRGP standing from prone still causes an AoO that has not changed in at least the Beta rules. The only thing that was nerfed with trip if I remember right is the +4 bonus in Improved Trip and the bonus to weapons like the flail, spiked chain...

Tripping is made as part of an attack action and can be done as many times as you have attacks pg. 151

Also on the forums Jason stated that his original intent was that they couldn't be done as AoOs but that between the arguments on the forum and discussions with coworkers he changed his mind and any CMB that uses an attack roll (i.e. trip, disarm, sunder) can be made as an AoO, this means you can't grapple or bullrush as these are standard actions, but you can do the previously listed.

You no longer get the free attack unless you have the feat Greater Trip, which then allows you to make the extra attack.

Maybe I am thinking of the free attack when you successfully trip a person. Also, maybe he was refering to the tripping rule under alpha, but never checked it under beta. I will have to look into it at home.

That's the one I thought you were refrencing. In 3.5 you got a free attack if you successfully tripped your opponent and you had Improved trip. The AoO for the opponent standing was seperate and never went away.

In PF beta Jason removed the free attack from a successful trip with Improved Trip, but then put it back in in the form of another feat called Greater Trip, which was posted with the new feats for playtesting in the announcement section.

Basically you can do everything you did with 3.5 trip, it just takes an additional feat.

Well that will make the monk happy! Since hurracane Ike hit in September, we have only played 2 times so I missed the announcement. We are playing regularly again (finally) so this is good to hear. I hate tripping as the DM, but loved it as a player...

Thanks for letting me know about that feat!
