My FLGS is hosting it, well afriend of mine. Unfortanatley due to some mix ups our store signed up too late to get the kits but still got the adventures and pre gens (in pdf from wizards) so Thankfully with my overly unhealthy D&D minis collection and some pocket support of a friend who is putting it all together I'll be playing (at this point) and we will get to check it out.

Actually were in little portsmouth Ohio, and the demand for Game day down here isnt as crazy as real cities. We have a small community college here that somewhat supporst gaming but not very heavily. If were lucky we can usually get 2 -3 goups of 5 players together on game day, but usually it ends up at 2 groups maximum. Even the release of 4e was that way. But we like playing nonetheless.

Oh... So WotC changed the date of the Worldwide Gameday ?
Before it was in... october, right ?
I understand they want to promote their products, but changing the date of an anniversary is not a good idea.
Keeping the same date would maintain the tradition, which would also have a commercial impact.
They could have just brought a special event for this book.
Edit : Huh, nevermind. I just checked and realized that D&D Worldwide Gamedays were not on the same date on previous years.
It was in november in 06 and 07, but june in 08 and so in march this year.
Actually the D&D WGD is in fact a commercial launch of some specific products of WotC, not a celebration of D&D or roleplaying games like i wanted to believe.
Silly me.

Yep. In fact, I think I read that there would be another this summer for MM2. I'm not sure MM2 is so exciting it needs its own game day, however ...
Stewart Perkins |
Well to be specific the original idea of game day was in fact just a promotional day to play D&D, same day every year, but with the launch of 4e it became a PHB Day event. I'm ok with this as long as they are doing good for the hobby by promoting their game with a fun event with some free swag to generate good will. Heck I'm ok with the event being book launches with just a free adventure to encourage people to organize and check out the new material for free before deciding on purchasing (like how the ph2 classes and abilities are being shown). But thats just me.

Yeah, I was asked by the owner of the FLGS if I would be willing to DM for Game Day. It will cut into my weekly Second Darkness game, but since I run those games at the shop, I thought it would be the least I could do for putting up with all my games.

How's the SD campaign coming along? I know sayler mentioned about adding a new player.

Yeah, relatively close. The store is "A Hidden Fortress" in Simi Valley.
The SD game has been going pretty good I think aside from a few hiccups. The new player hasn't actually showed up yet so I'm not sure what is going on there. Currently back to four players and with an odd mixture of classes, but considering everything I think it is going pretty good still.

I am running it in my home in Lincoln, NE via RPGA/Organized Play Network. Not much RPGA going on in my FLGS as far as I know. I should have at least one full group, with another in the works. I am also running an RPGA Living FR module that night.
My basement is decked out in promo swag. Kinda nifty.

Hey, Zynete, switch over to the post, Worldwide D&D Gameday and we can discuss the mod. I skimmed it yesterday and while it's more sophisticated than that first gameday mod, it's definitely a simple plot.
I still haven't seen it yet, I asked Wednesday and the game store had not received it yet. I was going to check again later today.

Ah! I felt the same way, especially when I ran my first game with the powergamers in the rpga. I then discovered something: they know the rules and are more that willing to let you know. However, they'll point it out to each other and they'll always acquiesce (at least in my group) my decision. The game was actually easy to run since if anyone, including me, had a question, one of the rpga members would voice the solution. Made the game move fast.

Nope. Not me. I have the hardcopies only.

I've heard that someone will set up WWDDGD here in Seoul, Korea, but I haven't volunteered yet. I've run events in all but one of the events so far (when I was in Iraq), but this year I'm not sure if I'll run a table.
My group didn't switch to 4e like I thought we would (I'm running a 3.5 CotCT campaign), so I'm not really up on the 4th edition rules. I'm familiar enough to run a short game like the ones they have at game days, I suppose, but I'd feel a lot better if I had been running a 4e game for a few months.
On the other hand, it might be fun for me to just show up and play for a change.

Joela: Waiddaminute! You have copies of the actual "One Night in Weeping Briar" module for D&D Day? Holy crud!
So could you give a spoilered synopsis for those of us planning to run it--with maybe a list of some of the kinds of monsters we'll be running? I always end up wishing I'd bought a mess of extra monsters to make for bigger battles. It would be great to have enough advance time to actually pick up some singles in time to get them shipped here.
P.S. You're such a stud.

Well now I've got it so it's not such a bit deal. Heh. Going to have to mod it a ton before I run it and yeah I'm not even sure how to fix that goshawful ugly map they packed. It's like they aren't even doing cartography for game day anymore--they're just ripping graphics straight out of Streets of Shadow and slapping them together in pretty sloppy ways. Side one isn't bad, but the other two are horrid. Think I'll be forced to try and mod something together. Too bad I didn't get this until a week before I have to run it or I would have had more options.
*sigh* Well we do what we can.

My husband and I will be running a couple of tables at our FLGS (Blackthorn Game Center, in Dickson, TN). We haven't seen the materials yet; hopefully, he'll have them when we get there today for our weekly game.
Last time, for the Forgotten Realms-themed adventure, WotC somehow managed to forget to ship to his store even though he was signed up, and even though they sent the pre-package with posters etc.; so we're also prepping a quick adventure of our own in case the materials never show. And we've got some spare Common minis from older sets we can donate as the "free swag" for our guests, if we have to. But hopefully we won't have a recurrence of that particular problem...

TigerDave, the only thing the mod needs is a decent backstory. It's a simple "save the town" mission, not exactly scintillating for 11th level PCs.

Ah. Okay.
Well, to be honest - what do you expect? It's just a demo game that is supposed to run for 2-3 hours, which means it isn't intended for in-depth RPG, but just a preview of the new races and classes. I kind of expected that after reading that the preview characters were level 11.

I'm a member of the RPGA and run similar length mods all the time. There are some real excellent ones so I know WotC is capable of providing a decent backstories with demos.
Hmmm. Maybe I'll substitute the PHII day story with one of the RPGA plots and just keep the monsters....

Here's the story as presented:
You go hunting a dragon and fail (all backstory...you don't actually do it). Heading back to town, everyone's gone. You spot a quickling (!?) and a dire bear, as well as two troglodytes, menacing the first person you've seen so far--the miller's daughter, Solphi. There's a skill challenge of chasing her around town, then she tells you the "plot".
She's been hearing horrible things, and one of them is a voice pleading for its release and that if she helps it, it will make the voices go away. Turns out an archmage locked away a bunch of Tharizdun demons in a runed prison under what's become the grain mill. The voice belongs to a mezzodemon. The other guys in town (the quickling et al) are cultists of Tharizdun from up in the hills who are there mostly by accident. You go into the mill, kill some more cultists, go downstairs and kill the mezzodemon and his pet bearded devil (magically enslaved). There's also some weird little demon turtles and some constructs. That's it.
...and here's what I'm planning to do with it.
Okay, it's weird that the main demon is a mezzodemon. They aren't subtle manipulators, they're hulking bruisers. They're not interested in worshipping a god of the end of everything, they're looking to get paid. I'm subbing him for a Shadow Demon--they're cooler, they're manipulative enough to have a pet devil and to seduce a little girl into helping them, and they're tied to the forces of entropy and madness, which is very Tharizdun.
It's also weird that the cultists include such a random smattering of members; there's a minotaur, a quickling, and a mess of troglodytes. I think having troglodytes is fine, they love awful gods--but I'm teaming them with kuo-toas, with a grell philosopher so it's mostly an underdark thing. That way it's got a theme to it and it fits the backstory better. I kept the dire bear because I like the idea of troglodyte bear wranglers who use their stink to compel the bear to go where they want. It's quirky and funny in a way that a quickling with a pet dire bear just isn't. And let's just face it--it lets me make disgusting armpit noises.
I'm having the dragon hunt mean more in context of the story--a Catastrophe Dragon the Tharizdun cult was using to collapse the village and hopefully bust the runes keeping their demon friends sealed up. When that was looking like it was going to fail, a horde of the cultists stormed into the village to find it and break it themselves. It just happens the girl did it before they could find it.
Aside from the composition of the battles and beefing up the numbers with lots of minions, I'm not changing the encounters much. I put some kuo-toa javilin chuckers on top of one of the buildings just to play up the terrain a bit more (also using the encounter to introduce the slave-devil as a cameo, since he's on the cover of the module an' all!) The final boss has random squares that damage non-demons, but that's no fun--so I'm changing them to the original containment runes, that do damage to demons that the PCs can shift into them. That should be better.
Oh and I also tied in some rumors that the cave system where the hills dwelling cultists have been living are an extension of a massive labyrinth of tunnels leading to a forboding structure over the hills to the west...the Temple of Elemental Evil. I like the tie in. It'll make it feel more "Paragon" I hope.
I'm also running the game a little late in the day, so in case folks have already played it, I'm also prepping a second adventure based on the story continuation idea on the back page of the module. Basically once the cult figures out that the girl is special, they abduct her away to one of their affiliated cells in the horrible city of Nocturnis (from Open Grave). It turns out she can feel and understand the awful emminations of the dead and dreaming Primordial beneath the city and they're taking her to it to try and raise it into some enormous undead primordial world-eater. The PCs get to fight all kinds of awful stuff in this one, especially some particularly vile hook horrors.
Looking forward to it.

I too just got back from WWDDGD. I played the warforged barbarian and I loved the class, especially during the first two encounters. That said, I hated the final encounter and it didn't help that I had to run two paragon-level characters (the players of the avenger and invoker had to leave before we started the 3rd encounter). Personally, I thought that the final encounter was badly designed. First, you were essentially forced to enter the encounter all bunched up, and it was hard to spread out and avoid some really nasty artillery demons because of all the difficult terrain. Second, I thought there was an excessive use of hindering terrain; I played two melee strikers and it just left me frustrated, especially when my barbarian got caught in the trap, which left him stunned and at negative hit points. Third, even though you can technically use monsters that are level+4 in 4e, IMO, you shouldn't really use higher-level soldiers (at least not that high; come one, an AC 31 versus characters with an attack bonus of +15! I loved that 25% chance of hitting). Maybe I was just cranky, but I found the whole thing to be an excercise in frustration, and walloping on the mezzodemon with whatever dailies we had left (thankfully, they had miss effects) didn't really make up for it.

Thank you for the information. I am not running my game day until tomorrow, due to scheduling conflicts. I will keep this in mind when I DM. Maybe I will give the party some extra time to spread out before I open fire.
I have also found that any monster at Level+3 or higher is a real pain for parties to deal with. Even a Solo at Level+2 is a potential TPK. I try to design my adventures with Level+-2 as a guide for monsters and try to keep solos at or near Level.
Again, thanks for the report. I will put it to good use.

We didn't have as much trouble with the 3rd fight. I helped by using the invoker daily that gives everyone +6 to init, and so we got out of that chokepoint pretty fast. Overall, while most of us ended up bloodied, I thought that was the easiest of the three fights, though by no means a walkover. Maybe we approached it differently from your group, or maybe the fact you had 2 people who had to double up made it harder, since it's easy to miss abilities on 2 level 11s. I enjoyed all of the encounters and found the delve to be fun.
ghettowedge |
My Gameday went great, even with two players that had never played 4e before (one had never even looked at the rules.
I only had 4 players, so I adjusted all of the encounters. I think the biggest problem for them was that nobody wanted to play the invoker. It didn't show until the last fight, when the baddies had a huge advantage over battlefield control. The paladin got hosed by the traps in that fight, spend 4 or so rounds stunned, but the avenger took the worst of it when he teleported himself behind the demon and devil (he brought the devil with him), and went into negatives seperated from the others. Luckily, with a little prodding, the paladin swam over to save him. In the end the party won, and everybody had fun.

Yeah, in retrospect, we should have called it a day instead of trying to run two characters each, we definitely fumbled how we played the avenger and invoker (that said, I did enjoy playing the avenger). Our original invoker player used that daily power in our first combat; it would have definitely proved useful since everyone went after the demons and devils, which gave those nasty runespiral demons plenty of time to blast us!

I had a lot of fun. The only gripe we had was the book has plenty "how to use this to continue the campaign" stuff, but not even a single wrap up paragragh. No and they lived happily ever after or anything... just seemed like a waste with all the other descriptive stuff. Also the pcs pretty much automatically make all perception checks and the diplomacy use in the skill challenge was stupid easy for the Bard and Paladin. In the end I had a lot of fun as the Bard, never hardly used my majestic word, and no one took a single second wind. the first encounter was the toughest since we had to basically pick up and learn 4e paragon strength characters for the first time, but the second battle was a breeze, invokers +6 init daily and we took down the minotaur in 2 rounds (and thanks to unluck he never hit in his one chance). The runespirals are stupid tough, the trap in the last encounter is mean, but the barbarians charging ability is really good... he was throwing 25-40 damage around alot. Our group started slightly after the other group of the day and we finished the whole thing just after they started the second combat. Once we finished the first one which was really long, we breezed from there thanks to finally figuring out our strengths. I have to say I really like the bard, it may be the best version of any edition so far.

Actually, in the middle of the module, at the end of the flavor text descriptions, it says something like the townsfolk throw a big celebration and Solphie rewards the heroes with a big hug and a huge smile.

The rest of us had a great time though running my super modded version of the game. We had to speed through it a bit since I got there for the post-lunch shift and a lot of my players had to bail. That said, a few of the guys in our group are really new to the game and totally enjoyed themselves, which I love. I tried to build a lot of backstory into the pregens which ended up making some of them (mostly Squeaks and Roswyn) into genuinely beloved characters--they guys who played them did great.
The encounters played pretty nicely toward the front part--the troglodyte beastmasters playing sort of lite warlords made it fun to use them to direct the dire bear to maul people, and I gave the dire bear an extra ability to swat folks who damaged it, pushing them and knocking them prone for lightish damage. Worked nicely. I needed more minions though. These level badguys just have too many hitpoints, it just ended up taking forever even to bloody any of them.
But yeah, it was a fun game and everyone had a great time. Certainly the extra wrench-time under the hood paid off in spades. Can't wait for the next one. I've been trying to figure out what big monster is slated for a comeback. It's gotta' be something iconic. I know the rust monster and xorn are in the new book, but I can't imagine it's about either of them? Then again it's called "Into The Silver Caves" or something, so...maybe?
Anyway it'll be nice to kick back and take a little break. That D&D Day wore me out. Heh.

Game Day was great. My local FLGS hosted it. I just walked in and was given a table to play at. Thing is...this...was...VERY special to me. My son...age 10 asked me if he could game with me not to long ago. I was very moved by his request.
This happened after and incident in which I caught him playing with my mini's in the basement. It was cute...I sent him down to unload the dryer. He didn't come up so I went down and saw he had out a manticore, about 6 PC' looking minis and a couple of wolves that a ranger looking mini was ordering to attack the manticore. He was doing voices for them and little sound effects. Oh GAWDS it was cute. That was when he just turned 9.
Anyhow I told him "someday" I would teach him. Thing is...I had no "simple games" to show him. I was leaning to old school MSH RPG since I still have it somewhere. Then Game Day came up. I have looked at 4E and have some of the material. To me...the PHB seems soooo simple. I keep thinking it's just the quickstart rules. I am like "thats it"? When Game Day rolled around, the Friday before I decided sure...why not. Let his first game be this.
He LOVED it! We walk in. He was the only "kid" there rest being every stripe of geek from fatbeards to skinny pasty with t-shirts to the rare "girl" gamer. A few came over said hello and commented like "ahh you couldn't find players? Had to make your own right?" as a joke. We got a table with a married couple around my age, clean cut looking not geeky on the outside whatsoever, and another guy I know who is a hardcore grognard. My son looked at each character sheet, stopped on the dragonborn and warforged and asked about the warforged. I explained and he said "oh...a magically powered droid right?" He loved "Squeeks" and had SO much fun raging and using Devestaing Strike on things.
He was mad we had to stop. He wants to play more and have an ongoing game now. He even asked if he could get his own set of dice. I must stay...I cried a little that day. So what his first game isn't something I am a HUGE fan of. He has different tastes then me...thats fine. I am just glade he wants to be a gamer and we now have something other then martial arts to share.

I tried to build a lot of backstory into the pregens which ended up making some of them (mostly Squeaks and Roswyn) into genuinely beloved characters--they guys who played them did great.
Details?
The encounters played pretty nicely toward the front part--the troglodyte beastmasters playing sort of lite warlords made it fun to use them to direct the dire bear to maul people, and I gave the dire bear an extra ability to swat folks who damaged it, pushing them and knocking them prone for lightish damage. Worked nicely. I needed more minions though. These level badguys just have too many hitpoints, it just ended up taking forever even to bloody any of them.
Like what you did with the bear. Agree with taking forever to take the opposition down. My players, all RPGA members, b~@!@ed how much faster the game would have gone with their optimized, but lower level (9th) PCs would have been.
Anyway it'll be nice to kick back and take a little break. That D&D Day wore me out. Heh.
Ditto. I also played in the mod afterwards and man! It takes a lot of the player, too (but in a fun way).
