Hey Gene - its great to see this project continue after all these months, now years...

Tomorrow night, the PCs are confronting your Thoon Hulk and a contingent of evil halflings and minotaurs!

They're finally rescuing that PCs soul that got VOID from the Deck of Many Things. The PCs soul was purchased by what is know as the Soulgrinder (thoon leader). They've crossed worlds now and find themselves in Castle Blackmoor (of the Arnesonian design) and must fight their way OUT! LOL.

Its gonna be marvelous! I've got a 7x5 dungeon tile layout built, replete with minis. I haven't picked up the new minotaurs, but I've got tons from the old sets.

There will be blood. Mwahahahaha!

Liberty's Edge

Heh, yep, been a year since the 9th of this month; I wanted to do something special for the one year anniversary but it totally slipped my mind! I'll have to remember next year I guess! :p

Castle Blackmoor, eh? I feel sorry for you players; they've definitely got their work cut out for 'em, that's for sure. I'm sure it'll be a helluva session (or many sessions I would assume)! :D

The Thanksgiving dragon has arrived! Soon, all your vegetation will be turned into brittle dried chaff! How you'll long to give thanks then, but it will be too late!

Sovereign Court

Happy One Year Anniversary v.3.5 Stat Blocks for 4e Minis Thread!

Thanksgiving dragon - - - HA! I first think about a plump dragon breathing out mini pumpkins and spitting cranberry and stuffing. Next, I envision the smoldering but juicy husk of the dragon, stuffed and set upon a grand giant table.

Don't know that any of that makes sense, but it made me laugh. Caption reads, "Adventurers Give Thanks. Elves and dwarves sit together to celebrate the slaying of the tyrant dragon."

HAHAHA!

Maximized Sleep Spell Effects and
Methane Gas + Fireball!

Okay - new cartoon image in my mind now!

The Thanksgiving Dragon Family Dinner was always an explosive one, when Uncle Exunthicus Vox Kabor Tebor Rimanthric Arcanthor a.k.a. "Smellydoom" played a game of "pull my finger" with the hatchlings.

Minotaurs out of the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary last night fell pretty fast to the 9th level party.

Didn't finish the dungeon though. The bbeg, champion, evil priest are still alive. I set out the Thoon Hulk mini, and those who have been playing the game for centuries had NO flipping clue what was ahead.

Thats the best part about using these stats you make Gene - not only are they well made, but it keeps my players guessing.

Its then end of the dungeon crawl (4 game sessions long) and next week they will die or live to tell the tale. I'm a bit old school, and everthing they do is earned, paid for with their dearest blood!

Mwahahahaha!

Sovereign Court

quick threadjack/

... M & Gene et. al: The PCs did not walk through the fire archway, managed to pull minotaurs out of bbeg's room and destroy them. A couple channel energys and they're at full, except the Sorc is out of spells - now feebly using staffs and wands. All things considered, in the next room they face:
>Cr7 LE CL
>Cr10 BBEG Thoon Hulk Gene-style
>Cr7 Champion Minotaur MMIV-style (the earthglider thingy)

My question is: what buffs or area spells should I drop as the GM to keep this fair but well-challenging? My PFRPG Bestiary minotaur minions got roached. Or, do you think I'm fairly set for an interesting battle that can tip either way? (which is what I'm going for... party failure here is fair/epic and would fit perfectly, so I'm not pulling punches.) Thoughts?

end threadjack/

Sounds like you're having fun, Pax. I'd play test the encounter a couple of times to see how it might go. You can always come up with a plan A to strengthen the encounter and a plan B to weaken the encounter, if it's so close and you think you might really need them on the fly.

Personally, I'd have the minotaur greathorn sitting under the floor of the room with its earthglide (assuming the floor is stone or dirt, of course) then have it rise up as the party enters and use its earth warp ability to throw out a nice large area of rough terrain (which I'd say it'd ignore 'cause of its earthglide ability).

In regards to the thoon hulk; I would, of course, have it charge into melee and start brutalizing whatever is nearby. I assume your cleric is loaded to the hilt with buffing spells; if the group knows the party is coming (which, I suspect they would), I'd have him pump up the thoon hulk and himself as much as possible. Probably hit the thoon hulk with a bull's strength and bear's endurance spell followed by a group-wide prayer spell. Maybe cast a righteous might spell on himself followed by a nice divine power spell.

That alone should make the fight quite difficult and it's probably only used up a small amount of the cleric's spells (2 2nd level slots, 1 3rd level slot, and probably all of his 4th level slots).

Sovereign Court

Gene - could you please do the Shade Knight from Dun of Dre. I looked at that mini again, and I would love to use it in a new way - something gene-style! I'm thinking of picking up four of them. Seems like it would be a cool challenge for a 12th level party. Something wicked cool. I like the translucent effect of the mini, and it hints of incorporeality -but I don't know anything about 4e and plan to keep it that way, so could you have a look and consider doing it for v.3.5/Pathfinder RPG. Thanks.

P.s. Yeah...... The Thoon Hulk released the latch to the treasure room, from whence an Armored Guulvorg charged out. It was ugly. Playtest of the Oracle - shortest playtest ever. lol. Man, the look on the groups faces was precious!

Wow. You were committed. Glad to hear you are still having fun and buying minis--seems like I don't hear from you guys as much these days, so I guess we're all pretty busy. Happy Thanksgiving, guys!

Nifty looking miniature; I've added it to the list. I think I'm going to take a break from the iron dragon to get the minotaur thug and the shade knight (looking like the shade knight will sit at CR 8 or so) stated up.

Hehe, nice, those are the moments that players tend to remember for a looooong time. How did the oracle class run?

Yeeaah, I've been a bit too quiet lately, entirely my fault of course. I'll try to get back on the ball and updating with new stat blocks regularly. I blame shifting to a different website. :p

Hope Thanksgiving is going well for you guys; I get to cook the turkey this year and I fear it.

Sovereign Court

Oh yes. The cocatrice cooked up fine. Hope you both had a very happy thanksgiving! (along with everyone else following this thread).

Made my saving throw versus Tryptophan, and did not nap on Thanksgiving at all!

Nice to hear from you both. I think we should all work on a game project together (I'll contact you privately).

Take care!

P.s. They're still in Castle Blackmoor - fighting their way out. The payout will be very big in terms of xp, prestige, renown, and also the finding of an artifact fragment (hint hint). This season they are hopping to different TSR worlds as a course of nastalgia on my part, but also part of an grand adventure idea I have in mind to publish one day... (project anyone?)

Liberty's Edge

Two (!!) monster updates today. No iron dragons (yet), but I kinda skipped ahead on the list a bit and did something new for a change.

Today I've got the minotaur thug, and shade knight up for download. Here's the links:
Minotaur Thug
Shade Knight

The minotaur thug was easier to put together than I thought it'd be (just a stock minotaur, really, just a bit weaker) and the shade knight was loads of fun to stat up. Should be a fairly challenging melee opponent, too (though I'm sure there are those who would disagree with that).

Starting soon I hope to get updates flowing nicely again. I've been doing a lot of work on my new website and it's eating up the majority of my time (just doing all the relinking has been hellish), but it'll be worth it once it's done.

Following that I'll be getting back to the overall update of the monsters so that I can get everything flowing nicely and fix little errors that I've likely made everywhere.

Also on the horizon (very near future; either later tonight or tomorrow sometime) is a Creature Conversion Compendium update.

Anyways, that's all for now folks. Stay warm out there (it's cold here :p )!

Gene! First run through looks good. I think you were smart to switch to something else if the Iron Dragon was stymieing you. Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Glad they look clean for the most part.

I'll get to the iron dragons soon, just needed a bit of a break on them. I'm thinking on writing an Excel document to do all the base stat calculations for me to save some time. That's got to be the most difficult part of it all -- filling out those tables.

Liberty's Edge

New (kinda) critter for you folks today. This time it's a redux of the remorhaz:
Remorhaz

For this one I just took the stock remorhaz and beefed him up a little bit while giving him the new ability from the miniature card. Should be different enough to catch players familiar with them off guard.

Up next is the minotaur battle shaman. If all goes well I'll have it up later tonight (I've got free time, and dammit I'm using it for mini stating!).

BTW, my daughter gave me an elder green dragon booster for Xmas. And what was in the invisibles? That's right, an adult brown dragon. Later, I went shopping with a gift card and bought a Goristo booster, which contained another brown dragon.

Liberty's Edge

Awesome, awesome. Hope your players like fighting dragons. :p

I'll probably start rolling some more stat blocks out once the new year's rolled around.

Happy holidays everyone!

Liberty's Edge

Just a quick notice for folks:
Over the next few days I'm going to be removing all material from my site that contains WotC product identity (currently, this amounts to five monsters (the Carrion Crawler, Galeb Duhr (both of 'em), Shadow Flayer, and the Thoon Hulk), two base classes (my rewrites of the Hexblade and Marshal), and a prestige class (my update of the Master of Chains)).

Just a bit of forewarning for anyone who wants to snag any of that material before it goes *poof*. Also, since I'm not going to be messing with things relating to WotC's product identity, this also cuts out the Yochlol Tempter from my future stating projects.

Oh! One more thing. Before any conspiracy theories start flying; I want to make it perfectly clear that I'm doing this of my own will and I've not been contacted by anyone from WotC and asked to do this; I'm doing it because I want to better conform to the OGL, nothing more. I have no problems with the more general stuff (take the various kinds of demons and devils, for example), just with stuff that is explicitly their creation (such as the aforementioned materials).

Still, in the future, expect materials that will replace these 'lost' beasties in new and interesting ways.

---

That said. New critters are forthcoming (currently working on that minotaur battle shaman).

And I just got my Yochlol Tempter, too...

Liberty's Edge

Okay, here's what I'd recommend. Open up your Monster Manual and find the Phasm.

Now, switch it's type to Outsider (you'll have to increase it's BAB by 4 points, increase it's saving throws to 9 + ability score modifier, and allocate additional skill points (6 per HD)) and alignment to chaotic evil, finally and change its subtype from (shapechanger) to (chaotic, evil, extraplanar).

Once you've done that, switch out its slam attack for 2 tentacle attacks that both deal 1d8+StrMod damage. Also, increase its natural armor bonus to AC by 8 points to give it a base AC of 25 and give it a +10 boost to its strength score (bringing the total to 22 with a +6 modifier). Also, give the critter a climb speed of 20.

Following that, remove its Resilient (this lowers its saving throws by 4 across the board) and Alternate Form special abilities.

Replace that thrice-damned alertness feat with something worthwhile (I'd recommend ability focus (maddening web)) and give the critter the following abilities:

Amorphous Flurry (Ex): As a full round action, the yochlol tempter may make twice as many tentacle attacks as normal (4 instead of 2). If two or more tentacles successfully strike a single foe, that creature suffers a -4 penalty to its armor class for 2d4 rounds. The yochlol tempter may employ this ability once every 1d4 rounds.

Maddening Web (Su): As a standard action, the yochlol tempter may conjure forth a web that not only holds its foes in place, but also slowly drives them mad. This ability functions like a web spell (caster level is equal to the yochlol's hit dice (15 in this case) and save DC is equal to 10 + 1/2 yochlol's hit dice + yochlol's Charisma modifier (DC is 19 in this case)), except that creatures entrapped within the web suffer 1d4 points of Wisdom damage at the beginning of their turns.

Poison Resistance (Ex): The yochlol tempter gains a +4 bonus on all saving throws against poison.

Spider Queen's Cruelty (Su): All drow fighting with a yochlol tempter as an ally are terrors to behold. Any allied drow fighting within 60 feet of a yochlol tempter gains a +2 profane bonus to attack and damage rolls, and a +5 profane bonus on rolls made to confirm critical hits.

---

Once you've done that you basically have a Yochlol Tempter that I'd gauge to be around CR 11 or 12.

Thanks, Gene -- great ideas, and would make a much tougher Yochlol than the one in Fiendish Codex I. Got any thoughts on the Demon Binder?
[Not that you have to address this particular point, but just my reaction: I looked at the PrC in Drow of the Underdark, but instead of those options and "useless flapping limbs," I'd rather have either a genuine transformation that gave the DB permanent extra usable limbs, reflecting the Spider Queen herself, or maybe a temporary spiritual transformation that manifested the limbs for a limited time.]

Liberty's Edge

I totally forgot about the yochlol in the Fiendish Codex! Yeah... mine's a bit tougher. I s'pose you could always say that the above would net you a greater yochlol. :p

As for the Demonbinder... if you wanted to use that class, I think that allowing a demonbinder with a bound yochlol to spend 2 damnation points (or possibly more, maybe) to gain a yochlol's tentacle attacks (that being 2 tentacle attacks for a d8+Str damage) for 1 round.

As a more permanent option, I could see a demonbinder-like class that focuses on a single type of demon instead of whichever kind is convenient. For this, I could see a pair of tentacle attacks being a decent payoff as a higher level ability (5th level on a 5-level PrC and probably 8th or 9th level for a 10-level PrC).

'Course, in the case of a new PrC, I'd probably make a demonbinder remake a bit more beefy than the one presented in Drow of the Underdark (probably d6 or d8 HD and a moderate base attack bonus progression). I'd probably have it sacrifice a couple spell levels though (I'd keep it at 1 in a 5-level PrC, but probably two or three in the case of a 10-level PrC).

For a more Lolth-centric demonbinder, I'd probably have the capstone ability allow the demonbinder to shift into the form of a very large and very angry spider.

The extra packaging is to prevent shoplifting. I can't count the number of boosters I haven't bought because the bottoms were open, usually from chain stores.

And glad to see your still hating. I hope it keeps you warm at night.

I picked up the Storm Titan booster pack today, and it had two rares in it!

What are people doing with all those blue slaad spawns?

GW, yeah, I know what you mean with the opened booster packs. I would think that there new set up (one visible and better distribution) would also go a long way towards that. BTW, your mailer box is not an immortal part of my mini organization system, which has spilled over from two crates into three. Yay, Christmas!

You're lucky. I've sold off all my rares and around 600 commons and uncommons, yet mine are still taking up an entire bookshelf in the spare room.

Btw, you and everybody else that bought from me contributed too a fantastic wedding and amazing honeymoon. Thank you doesn't even begin to cover the memories I expect to have for the rest of my life.

I was happy to make a small contribution. Just sorry it couldn't have been more.

Quick question... what size is the earth archon rumbler?

Looking at pictures it looks to be medium-sized, but I can't be sure.

It's big body looms above it's medium-sized base.

MM2 lists it as medium size.

Sovereign Court

instead of starting a new thread somewhere else.......... got a question.....

I WANT TO WASH MY MINIS. I've had them on display and each one has accumulated just a touch of dust. They're easily wiped, but that's not my point. I wish to wash/rinse etc., such that they are shiny clean.

Assuming this is what i want to do, should i be using anything more than slightly warm clean water?

Is there a recommended solvent, such as those used in bars, or for cars, or collectors? Just wondering before i do this?

Note: I am not looking for ideas on storage to prevent dust. I keep 1000 in closed vaults where 100s of orcs reside, or 100s of gnolls, goblins, drow, etc., live. But I also have about 1000 minis I keep displayed on 5 large shelves in my game room. Please advise? Should i use a light soap of any special kind? Instead of just rinsing them, I was hoping to soak briefly then rinse - but ONLY if there is a recommended solvent for collectors?? just wondering?

Thanks,
-PAX
