Yes, I've read them. I haven't seen the movies but they bear little resemblence anyway. I enjoyed them but they are not very cheerful - Russia is a gloomy place. In fact, they are interesting about post-communist Russia more than anything else. They are also morally ambiguous, without very clear-cut goodies and baddies. I would try the first (Nightwatch) and see how you get on. Each book comprises three interlinked short stories, and once you realise that they make a lot more sense.

Thank you. So it must have to do with the english translation, the fourth book appeared in germany a while ago, only the the title is completely different (and no, I don't mean the language;) ).
