Has anyone read the english versions of Sergei Lukyanenko's Nightwatch books and are they worth reading.

The Exchange

Yes, I've read them. I haven't seen the movies but they bear little resemblence anyway. I enjoyed them but they are not very cheerful - Russia is a gloomy place. In fact, they are interesting about post-communist Russia more than anything else. They are also morally ambiguous, without very clear-cut goodies and baddies. I would try the first (Nightwatch) and see how you get on. Each book comprises three interlinked short stories, and once you realise that they make a lot more sense.

I have the movies and thought they were pretty cool. The plot in the Nightwatch movie meandered a bit but the second movie, Daywatch was just full of awesome.

I just ordered the Nightwatch book from Amazon also.

Does anyone know the status of the last book "Final Watch"? I preordered it on Amazon and was supposed to be released, oh, a coouple of months ago, but then Amazon sent me an email saying that they couldn't find it or somesuch. Now I can't seem to locate it anywhere. What gives?

The Exchange

Didn't know there was one.

Is "Final Watch" supposed to be the fourth or a fifth book?

Fourth book. It goes Nightwatch [Nochnoi dozor], Daywatch [Dnevnoi dozor], Twilight Watch (or Duskwatch by some translations)[Sumerechnyi dozor], then Final Watch [Posledni dozor].

Thank you. So it must have to do with the english translation, the fourth book appeared in germany a while ago, only the the title is completely different (and no, I don't mean the language;) ).

Got it a couple of weeks ago here in the UK, it's called 'The Last Watch'. Had ordered it from Amazon but they never delivered so got it from another site instead.
