Problem: Clerics, Fighters, Paladins, and Sorcerers (and to a lesser extent, Wizards) get too few skill points (levels, ranks?) to properly express certain background choices. This problem, IMO, is even worse than in 3.5. In 3.5, a Cleric with an Int of 10 would have 8 skill points to spend where he would. He could max out two skills, or spread them out over more skills, but with less training in them all. He could only put a maximum number of Level + 3 in a class skill and only half that in a cross-class skill. Unfortunately, cross-class skills also cost twice as much.
In the current rules system, that same Cleric now has 2 skill ranks. There are only two skills that he's going to have any kind of training in, either minimal (it was a cross-class skill) or full-blown (it was a class skill). There's no spreading out your skill points like there was before.
Suggestion: Classes receive 2 + Int (or however many skill points the class allows) skill points per level just like it is now. Classes receive 4 times this amount at first level (like how it was in 3.5). A class skill costs one skill point per rank and a cross-class skill also costs one skill point per rank. The maximum number of ranks in a class skill is Level + 3 and the maximum number of ranks in a cross-class skill is Level + 0.
This way, characters that want to max out a class skill can still do so, just like the current setup. Characters that want to max out a cross-class skill can still do so (as much as is possible), just like the current setup. The difference is that if a player wants a few (or even one) levels in a class skill because he wants to be able to express training in other skills, now he could do so.

I can't agree with this.
I've been converting COTCT NPCs to Pathfinder for my campaign, and in every case, their skill bonuses are bigger with the consolidated skill list, improved skill feats, and the training bonus and reduced penalty of cross-class skills. I think the skill system is pretty good as-is.
It seems that everyone is forgetting the favored class bonus gives 1 skill point per level. If that's not enough, why not have a feat called Skilled that grants a further 1 skill point per level?

I would say no. Bumping the 2 skill class to 4 skills would be a far easier fix. Death of the x4 at level one was one of the cleaner fixes. It just crippled the 2 skill classes worse then b4.
The fix is easy don't use 2 skills per level.
Agreed. Anyway, the chance of any skill system other than changing everything to 4 rank/level right now has slim to none chance of getting anything done, just read the sticky at the top.
