I posted this under product discussion but it's for an older item and might be ignored.
Question - In your view how would a Paladin (of Sarenrae) react to an item such as the Soulspeaker from Hollow's Last Hope? The one in our group is having a moral dilemma.
As DM I'm enjoying the group roleplaying this out. However I'm not sure if this will ever expand into other magic items (Hand of Glory, Hand of the Mage) though I see a distinct difference.
So what do you think?

I do not see where the paladin of Sarenrae would have any choice in the matter. The fact an enslaved soul is involved would dictate the paladin striving to find a way to release the soul so it can go to its final resting place.

Going by the printed description I agree, but I'm making them pay for an Identify before they get the item description. (my earlier 'assumed' mention is my add) Coupling that with Knowledge Arcana. Still I'm cautioning them it won't be 100% solid info.
The NG cleric of Desna and the CG bard are having way too much fun with this thing. If the paladin convinces them to free the soul I'll give him an XP award. But, the party will be out the treasure value so I may have to throw them a bone later.
They tried to get a POV from the NPC cleric of Iomendae who was willing to 'look over' the item overnight. Despite its 'pagan' origins. They didn't trust that the item would survive said examination.
It's fun that seemingly innocuous items can lead to such good role-playing, and examining alignments.

I'd be concearned over the NG and CG characters. No good character should enjoy an item if they have [i]any[i] reason to beleive it's existance could entrap a soul.
I havn't looked at the item in question so I don't know the specifics, but if the party don't have any reason to keep the item around other than "it's useful" then they really should try to destory it...otherwise I'd start giving them evil points.

It probably depends on whether the soul within reads as evil. If it's an evil person who ended up in a bad situation, it's simply tasteless to keep it around, but not taboo. If it's a good soul though, trapped in its own private hell, the cleric and bard should be just as willing to destroy it, as CG types are even more concerned with freedom than the LG are.
One of my groups had a similar issue with a possessed dagger. The Paladin lied and said it was a good soul. The thing needed to be destroyed either way (let the soul be judged by the gods), but he knew he'd have to spin a good reason before his greedier friends would let it go.
That paladin was always tricking his party members into commiting good deeds.

always a tough job...i agree i would give XP to the player for destroying such an item, it doesn't matter if the soul is good or evil... no one of good alignment should have pleasure in the fact that someone else is suffering for something that is just mere practical...

Yep we're definitely into the alignment arena.
Since the item doesn't go into the background too much I'm running it as a 'pagan/forced' totem, especially since the forest witch that had it was fond of 'extracting' unique prices for her services. Read the free module for the inference there, or check this
At the very least the item has a necromancy component.
Yep, even the smallest item can open doors to the character personae.
