Hi Everyone,
My archivist character is rapidly approaching level 9, and I'm seriously considering taking leadership for my next feat. The character is an archivist of the forge god, and I was thinking about having some sort of construct or construct-themed cohort, but I have no idea what's out there. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd also like to keep the LA below +4 to make it fairly robust.

well, you're probably not allowed a Warforged, but that would be my prime suggestion
other than that, the construct guys aren't really good for Cohorts so much as villain-smashy-bots.
perhaps someone who was half-golem'ed and you freed/repaired/enslaved them?
or if you really want to get crazy, a nimblewright. although i personally wouldn't allow that in my game.
how about another forge-god-worshipper, perhaps one pursuing the Green-Metal Adept class from Complete Arcane.
of course, you can't go wrong with a straight human cleric or bard, for simplicity and utility.

It may be contrived, but I'd consider the make-up of the rest of your party when choosing your cohort. Most every game I've played since 2000 has included a cohort, and the ones that have been most appreciated have been the "gap-fillers." For instance, if the party lacked an effective healer, a Cleric worked for us. When one Eberron character, a halfling Bard, was far less mobile than her companions (a mounted Paladin and speedy Monk), a clawfoot dinosaur cohort kept her in the action.
Do you have access to the Artificer class? That would be my best suggestion. They're extremely versatile, and in addition to being thematically appropriate for what you described, can fill just about any gap your party has--even more than one gap.

We've got no warforged and the DM does not allow the artificer class, citing that they don't fit into his game world. I wanted a Maug, but that was nixed too. :(
Good suggestion about gap filling. I have considered the roles that need bolstering and it looks like we need some fire support, so I'm starting to think about ideas along that line. Best I can think of is a lantern archon celestial bloodline sorcerer. The archon powers, combined with additional HD and arcane blasty spells would do nicely.
Problem there is the absence of that mechanical theme. I suppose servants of the various gods could have differing appearances based on their portfolios.
Any other ideas?

Hmmmm... I was strongly considering playing for the first time a "level progression" monster, a hound archon as detailed in the Planar Handbook, in our Red Hand of Doom campaign. Two of the three other players had melee characters, though, so that was out. Still, it was fun to imagine 'leveling' a character in the Savage Species style.
If maug and artificers are out, your DM might well nix them, too, but nimblewrights came to mind when you mentioned "mechanical stuff." They're from Monster Manual II, and appeared in
Can't think of any other non-standard cohorts with an artifice slant at the moment, other than golems.
