What is the PFS ID card for?

Paizo Employee Director of Brand Strategy

Other than providing players a reminder of what their faction and player number are, is there another purpose for the downloadable cards? Are these supposed to be given to GMs like business cards? I think they're a neat thing to have, but I am curious as to the intention of Paizo in making them.

I'm gonna hand mine over next time I get stopped for speeding.

And the police officer is going to also be a Pathfinder member and say, 'You better say you were late for a game, buddy!'

Better hope he's not from Qadira. Those guys have no respect for the haste required to protect the relics of antiquity.

The main thing I can think of is that they are proof that you are the member with the pathfinder number that is at the top of your character sheet. without them I could go to a con, having played all 4 adventures currently out, and replay one of them with friend X's character. The cards associate a real life name to the player number, which can be checked against their name tag at Cons

Mainly they're to keep your player number handy.

Because if the special black helicopters land at your house and you don't have your player number handy, you will be sad.

I hear you can get a drivers license with one in California.... :-P

I just signed up and downloaded my card.

It has Chelix as the faction but I was never given a chance to choose my faction (was probably going to go Andoran). Is this a problem for me? Am I stuck as Chelix until July?

Nope, if you do not choose a faction, it puts a random symbol on the card, this in no way reflects your character's faction

Even if you do choose a faction (I'd chosen Qadira) it sometimes puts a random symbol (I've got Taldor) on your card ...

I could still do that now.

Or are you suggesting that people aren't allowed to play without showing their physical cards?

You can still play, But if you forget youe number you won't get credit for it.

And I would highly recommend you keep your card with you anyway, just so you have easy access to your number. Reporting your results under the wrong number could be bad.
