I think the knight should be banned from chess.

Only because of puns like that.

It's spelled "pWns," Fale Earnfardt.

Only because they keep on playing second. Nimzovitch proved that by playing 'pawn to King four', white automatically loses the game.

Can we please stick to the points of the OP?

I notice nobody seems to acknowledge my totally awesome and thoroughly universally true Chess Strata, which systematizes the value of each chess piece compared to the others. I'm pretty sure Plato would have included it in The Republic if he could have worked it in.

I'm sure Dana Plato would've seen it was full of fail, and Arnold would've said, "whachoo talkin bout, Fal Dorak?"

Pathfinder Chess should have animatronic pieces, and good artwork.

Bah, your Strata system is completely wrong. The points system was in place long before, and my 9 point queen is the true power on the board.

Getting back to the OPs point: The knight should move any direction two spaces. And, if there are two opponent pieces back-to-back it can take them both.

This fixes it!

That's way overpowered! You leave my knights alone, they don't need a power boost!

Scarab Sages

Okay, plenty of suggestions here, but none of this prevents a player from switching the pieces on the board when the other player goes to the washroom. We need rules to prevent this, or some sort of "game master" to oversee the rules of the game.

None of my players use knights anymore. We normally use Warknights from the Complete Checkmate.

Perhaps they should be that powerful. That is why they get to wear the shiny steel armor. And, have their way with the queen.

Which proves how broken that they are already.

I use point-buy to replace all the pieces but my king with an AH-64 Apache Longbow attack helicopter.

Then again, I think that's an acceptable gesture in rock-paper-scissors as well.

Scarab Sages

Funny, my opponents never complain about my chess-playing. Maybe that's because I only play chess games in my head.

Gary Kasparov is an idiot, I could beat Deep Blue (any iteration). But only if I am allowed to play in my head, and choose Deep Blue's moves, also in my head.

Real chess is for suckers.

EDIT: Little known rule, if you flip over the chessboard during play, you automatically win the game. This is known as the "Rocket Launcher" rule, as it was first used by Afghan resistance against the Soviets, when they didn't have time to play an entire game, frequently knocking over the board while reaching for their rocket launchers.

Pfft. In the latest edition of chess, they fixed the knight be removing it from the game and replacing it with a black checker. And you can get multiple kings. It's an easier and more fun version of chess.

That just results in contests going on for longer, when you have to hunt down and destroy multiple kings. I thought that they were supposed to be speeding up the game.

I wupped Bobby Fischer.

He opened with kp-e4. Then I smacked him in the head with the chess clock. He forfeited.

That must be the real reason that he fled the US, and none of that nonsense about his playing Spassky again without approval.

Well, he shouldn't come to Texas talking all his garbage. We ain't fraid a no Russian grandmasters here.

Scarab Sages

Chess should totally only be played with pawns. I mean, with kings, queens, and knights on the board, there's definitely nothing for the pawns to do. Those higher level pieces are always running all over the board and snuffing out problems as soon as they occur. And they never leave anything for the pawns to do.

Scarab Sages

Bah! Real Men play with Dragons!

...and Mages!

...and Oliphants!

Check out Knightmare Chess for a bit of unpredictability. Also, see Byzantine Chess. There are many variations of chess - there is a version called Grand Chess, with 24 pieces per side.

Incidentally, the knight's L-shaped movement was designed to simulate a lance's attack from either side of a horse.

I know this thread was in humor, but I have a certain love for historical games. :P

Paizo Employee Director of Brand Strategy

Why has no one attempted to balance the Artificer chess piece from Complete Chess? It's way underpowered now, because all the standard chess pieces have such an unreasonably high boost! You know, not everyone just plays with the pieces that come in the box. There's much other fun stuff that's being overlooked here. I'm going to play backgammon instead of this revised chess.

Knights!? Pawns are totally unbalanced. You think sure it's just a pawn I'll allow it, no big deal but after playing for awhile they get out of hand. At a later point in the game suddenly it turns into something else. And it's like WTF? How'd I let that get in there? The game just ends soon after almost all the time. I've done the math.

Plus that little variant where they turn into queens and bishops almost randomly? What's up with that? I think they should turn that ability into a choice any of the pieces can take.

I've always foound that pawns try to get in the way of my loosing streak so I have started to ignore them after they go so far across the board...

Simple, every square the pawn is further from their side is equivalent to 1 level. When they get to 7th level they can cast polymorph and win the game.

Knights aren't overpowered. I houseruled that they can't do any 'L' shaped jumps to the left and they are perfectly fine. Leave them as they are.

Please. Complete Checkmate is one of the most unbalanced supplements ever published for our game.

And don't get me started on the Warknights... I'll just say something everybody will agree is totally out of place in a low-moves chess campaign: "W" movement!
What use do we have for a Queen or a Bishop with the Warknight on the table?

Don't worry, they may sound bad but they're like an old married couple and Jal Dorak is their bratty teenager. ;-)

Oh and by the way, knights rock. They're my favorite piece because no one knows how to use them and they always get the sneak attacks.

But only when you have another piece on the other side of the one you're sneak attacking. Personally, I just have my Bishop team up with the mage in the castle to buff and hide the king. I always seem to win by default.

Maybe you should try using them in the correct way instead. Your logical failings are not hidden through your mangling of the English language.

Also, if Paizo is really listening to me and the important things I have to say, instead of paying lip service to the concept of listening, they would understand the absolute truth of my views on chess. What we need is a two tier economy for upgrading pawns - a white pawn should first switch color and then upgrade. Otherwise, everyone will just play the game to have all their pawns move to the other side, become queens, and enter into a battle royale which breaks the game.

Sovereign Court

I can't believe you guys are expecting me to wade through two pages of insults and ad hominems to see if there is any useful information in here. The issue is simple:

1. Is the knight broken?

2. If so, what should be done to fix it?

I'm not saying that any answer is right or wrong (although the OP is totally off his rocker IMHO). I'm just suggesting we cut the drama and stick to the issue at hand.

Personal experiance in my group tells me that they all have fun with this and there is nothing wrong with it. therefore, there is nothing wrong with the game that needs to be fixed. although somehow one of them found a combination in a splatbook that allowed their knight to become divine rank 0. totally broke that game.
