I posted this on another thread, but was afraid it might get lost in the shuffle. Any thoughts?
After careful consideration, I think that Weapon Training could benefit from borrowing the concept behind the Ranger's Favored Enemy mechanic.
Weapon Training
Starting at 5th level, select one group of weapons, as noted (see Pathfinder Beta, pg. 27). Whenever a fighter attacks with a weapon from this group, he gains a +2 to attacks and damage.
Every for levels after that (9th, 13th, and 17th), a fighter can select a new group, gaining the benefit listed above, or choose to further his mastery of an already selected weapon group, gaining an additional +2 to attacks and damage.

So... you want to co-opt the ranger's main combat strength... but make the fighter better at it?

At the risk of being more complected what if we opened up the uses for the ability and not just by adding more damage?
What if every time you took weapon training you had options of different things ? maybe the weapon groups or styles of combat kinda almost like a talent tree? Not sure but maybe we need to expand the training somehow.

Here's a repost of the idea I floated earlier in the thread in question.
Weapon Training (Ex): Starting at 5th level, a fighter can select one group of weapons, as noted below. Whenever he attacks with a weapon from this group, he gains a +1 bonus on attack and +1d6 on damage rolls.
Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th), a fighter becomes further trained in another group of weapons. He gains a +1 bonus on attack and +1d6 on damage rolls when using a weapon from this group. In addition, the bonuses granted by previous weapon groups increase by +1/+1d6 each. For example, when a fighter reaches 9th level, he receives a +1 bonus on attack and +1d6 on damage rolls with one weapon group and a +2 bonus on attack and +2d6 on damage rolls with the weapon group selected at 5th level. Bonuses granted from overlapping groups do not stack. Take the highest bonus granted for a weapon if it resides in two or more groups. Additional damage is of the same type as the weapon (slashing for Longswords, bludgeoning for clubs, etc.).
This idea got some traction in the other thread (you can go there to read the back-and-forth if you wish).
One of the nice things about this idea, in the vein of Seekerofshadowlight's comment, is that the additional d6's of damage can open up Fighter feat possibilities similar to the Rogue Ambush Feats from one of WotC's books (I don't remember which; Complete Scoundrel, maybe?). Trade a d6 of Weapon Training Bonus Damage to inflict a 5' movement penalty, or blind the opponent for 1 round, or daze them, or any number of possibilities.
But in answer the OP's request for thoughts, I don't think +8 damage/hit after 20 levels is very significant. I think you really have to get into bonus damage dice to cause a significant bump in damage dealt. At least 4d6 (with a mean value of 14) is about enough to generally counter DR15. Besides, static bonus are kinda bland. With rolling dice there is the anticipation of whether you're going to have a good roll or a bad one.
Sorry to threadjack you idea with my own.

yes please do not add more bonuses to hit and damage--they are unecessary and dull.
If you want to add something add something new.
