Okay guys you can do your posting hear.
I'm thinking of going with the PI concept, but I think I'll focus on the Dunwich material instead of the Mansions of Madness stuff, since we have a player who is pretty familiar with mansions of madness.
Hopefully you guys can find a way to differentiate your characters. Start thinking of some ideas for concepts we can bounce them around a little.
I'll post a few more ideas once I look at the material a bit more and decide how I'm going to mesh the PI and Dunwich stuff together.

Tigger_mk4 |

My thinking is that I could play the secretary who works for the detectives ; intelligent but pretends to be the ditsy-innocent blonde type to get extra info from the clients and so forth. The tpye who sizes up the clients before they talk business to the guys.
I'm thinking some charm/con,perception/psychology and interpersonal skills, plus typing, filing, use handbag in melee and "look charmingly innocent" as a skill :-P
That would leave more room for everyone else to be the more traditional PI/detective character types.
(p.s. I'm a guy in real life, but playing la femme will make a nice change...)
p.p.s Which ed of Coc/BRP for character gen - e.g is it Edu x20 or Edux15 for skills./ I'm assuming the newer version ?

P.H. Dungeon |

I have the 5th edition rules, so those are the ones I was planning on going with.
To some extent I share scranford's concern. However, I'm already hearing ideas come out that are showing promise towards getting around some of those hurtles.
Think about their previous occupations as well.
For instance, We have an anitquarian PI, We have and adventurous secretary/PI, we might have an ex military/PI or PI occult expert.
We can consider ways to split up skill selection
For instance one Pi might be really good at rogue type skills (stealthy, perception, picking locks etc...
another PI might have more firearms and combat skills
another PI might have a lot of academic skills
another might have lots of social skills.
When you create a character consider having your character be a PI, but necessarily have the PI profession for skills. The antiquarian PI might instead have the antiquarian profession. The academic PI could have the professor profession, the social skills PI might have the socialite occupation.
Also I don't mind if you swap your abilities scores rolls around a little. For instance if you role a great strength, but shitty charisma and you want to swap them, that's fine.
I'm mainly posting to get the dot on the page. It's going to be tough to come up with five private detectives that don't cross each others paths, but I'll give it some thought and see what I can come up with.

Tigger_mk4 |

Just throwing out off-the-top of my head ideas for others who might be stumped here:
-- Sherlock Holmes had a flatmate who accompanied him on investigations, -- Magnum PI had several associates who came along for muscle/transport/assistance
-- Superman/Batman/Spiderman are often in cahoots with a reporter or two (Kolchak?!)
-- an author might be writing a book on the PI business,
-- in The Scaryfiers (a terrific comedy-horror audio series set in the 1930s thats available from the UK) Lionheart has Professor Dunning & Aleister Crowley to help him out in "unusual cases" .
-- Hobbyist sleuths (Jessica Fletcher, Miss Marple) might already be involved who join forces with the PIs
-- Jealous Girlfriends keeping an eye on their man ("So, you're telling me you and your secretary are going to do an all-night stake out ? a likely story!")
-- A representative/relation of the patron going along to make sure the money is being well spent....

How about Father Patrick McCovey. Former Catholic priest, turned author whom assists in investigations involving the occult. Has seen many things in his time, and been involved in Exorcisms, Sanctifying cursed sites, etc., both when with the church, and now that he's an independent consultant, and author of several locally popular short story collections of hauntings. Resigned from his position in the local church, due to refusing to back down from his recounting of what he saw happen in an abandoned warehouse downtown seven years ago. Still loved by the community, but many think he has tipped the bottle a few too many times. (they're not completely off base; got to have some way to deal with the things he's seen), but he is indeed a staunch opponent of evil.

P.H. Dungeon |

Sounds good. You should read Lovecraft's "Dreams in Witchhouse" that would be a good haunted house for him to have investigated.

Tigger_mk4 |

I'm a bit held up with the curse they call "Work" today.
I'll definitely be taking Flapper as a class, with Shorthand and typing as the professional skills... I've got a whole character write up in my head, but not time today to write it down...
I'll try to post the full character tomororow.

Tigger_mk4 |

Margarita (Rita) Scarlachi was born twenty six years ago, the youngest child of an italian-american family in New Jersey. Growing up with three older brothers meant she learnt alot about baseball and (American) football, and developed a belief that woman was as good as any man,, regardless of what society may say. The loss of two of her three brothers during the Great war heightened her independance.
The increased freedom of the 1920s/30s drew her towards the flapper crowd. While bright, Rita never managed to quite cut it in upper class society; her inability to lose her "New Joisey" accent always held her back.
Although a reasonably talented secretary, her independance made her too "uppity" for some lower class employers and her accent made her "too common" for higher-class others. Moving from job to job and place to place, she eventually made a home for herself in Arkham. Whilst there was no more work there than in the big Apple, her new boyfriend Hymie Bishop bankrolled their evenings out at the speakeasys.
Then, a couple of years back, she began to suspect her boyfriend Hymie had run out on her, and the determined woman hired a private eye to find out why he'd been going out late at night (and where had he gone !)
As it turned out, Hymie wasn't stepping out with another girl at night -the good natured (if somewhat dim) man had gotten involved with bootleggers in an effort to earn more money to buy her a ring. Unfortunately he had been caught and imprisoned by the Feds and too ashamed to tell her. five years was a long time to wait for him, but heck she loved him, didnt she, the big dumb galoot.
On the bright side however, it turned out the PI's needed a good secretary and Rita needed a job not too far from the prison...and she's been working with them ever since...

It looks like the characters are coming well. I look forward to getting started.

She's looking pretty good and average, just as secretary probably should. Still, I think she'll be fun to play.

Heh, don't fool yourself. She is definitely below average but that's fine, Cthulhu isn't about power gaming. That first set of physical rolls was just abysmal tho. So, even with the second set of roles don't expect her to be terribly successful. She does not have ANY combat skills. If we encounter anything even slightly dangerous (what are the chances of that?!) she will be absolutely no help.
Actually, I just noticed Fergus Garrity has none either, were doomed.....lol

P.H. Dungeon |

So it looks like 2/3 of you have your characters done. I'm going to try getting the pbp going either tonight or tomorrow. Even if you haven't quite got your character fully finished feel free to start posting once it goes up, and finish it as you go. I won't be asking for too many skill checks and such initially.

P.H. Dungeon |

From the looks of things none of the first two characters have any real combat skills. You might want to consider having at least one character who has a little training with fire arms. On the other hand we can go as is, and see how thing run. I'll try not to make it too too dangerous (at least not initially).

Tigger_mk4 |

Sorry aobut the slight delay in stats, real life intruding a fair bit - I've posted on the story thread to help keep ticking over .
I have the day off work tomorrow (friday), will put up stats then.
<p.s. Part of my recent tasks has been to put up an audio of myt groups CoC game online, if there's any interest in that sort of thing...>

Really? You don't think I am posting enough P.H.? I think I am averaging around 2 posts a day. I think Rita has averaged about 1 post a day (so pretty good there too). Fergus admittedly is on the slow side but hopefully that will pick up as soon as RL calms down for him. If your refering to us not charging into the thick of things well after many hard lessons, in Cthulhu, I have learned to make sure I explore all avenues before taking that plunge.

P.H. Dungeon |

Not you. It was mostly Fergus's character that was holding us back. But he's essentially made it clear now that work has been keeping him away for now, and that hopefully in a couple of weeks things will be better. Anyhow mostly I just wanted to start a second CoC. I'm enjoying the rping going on so far. I just like it best when all the players are more equally involved, especially when you only have a small group. I'm fine with the pace you guys are taking. Investigation and role play is all part of the game in CoC. Charging into the thick of things tends to make a very quick and messy end for PCs in this game. I have no real complaints about this game (other than the minor one I mentioned above). I hope I didn't make you feel like I did.

![]() |

Well, it would be nice just to have a third at this point (Yes, I know Fergus will be back in posting form toward the end of the month). I think a fourth would be nice to fill in some of the gaps we have. Not a single one of us can fight at all. All it's gonna take is one fish dude and we are all chum....
I also didn't intend for Evelyn to be the face of the group really at all (which is why I am leaving some of it up to Rita, as a secretary she is usually first contact with people before we see them). Yeah, she'll talk to people and all that but she is much more interested in things that look pretty, have some historical value, and are rare. She also deals with the law when it pertains to estates and such. When Rita pointed out in the police station that this case had to do with the estate of the Whatley's I was like, "DOH! It does, doesn't it." I was being a brain donor and didn't see that angle until she pointed it out. Thanks Rita! :)
P.S. Get over and save Sykala will you P.H. but read the discussion room first ;)

P.H. Dungeon |

Thanks for getting that ready, I'll try to work you into the campaign as soon as possible. Due to the speed of pbps, it will probably be a couple of days before I can have you make your intro, but I'll keep you updated. In the meantime you can keep working on your character.
Good Morning Ladies and Gent..My name is Robert E Jackson and I am here to make your lives a little brighter.

P.H. Dungeon |

Wellard feel free to start following the thread. I've started putting in posts for you. Try to keep up as best you can because the party is split up right now and I'd like to try to get everyone together in the near future. Your character will be responsible for delivering some important information to the other investigators on behalf of Professor Armitage.
