Born in Charlottesville Virginia on May 22nd 1896, the son of John Hancock Jackson(a distant cousin of Thomas H 'Stonewall' Jackson) and Alicia Mary Lee ( an even more distant cousin of Robert E Lee) it was Robert's fate from an early age to be educated at the Virginia Military Institute his fathers alma Mater(John H had taken part in the celebrated charge of the VMI Cadets in the battle of New Market in 1864). His family background made it difficult at first as his instructors expected him to show an example to the other 'Rats'due to his ancestry. But Robert was equal to the challenge and eventually graduated in the top ten percent of the class of 1916.

Whilst waiting for his commision to come through..Robert( who had been obsessed with flying machines from an early age and had learnt to fly during his holiday periods) answered the call for volunteers to serve in the Lafayette Escadrille.

Two hard years of war followed, in February 1918 the squadron transferred to the US Army Air Service as the 103rd Pursuit squadron and Robert found himself in American uniform at last. Flying until the wars end Captain Jackson as he now was survived with only minor injuries when his aircraft was downed in the last days of the conflict. He was captured but that captivity lasted only 4 days before the war ended. All in all he had a 'good war' but it was enough excitememnt to last him a lifetime

Returning to the USA Robert resigned his commisson and began a course in anthropology at Miskatonic U graduating from there in 1921. Since that time he has been closely involved in the work of Professor Armitage as one of his field researchers.

His parents are both now deceased and he makes an income from his land as well as from the job
