One is for the writers; the other is a solicitation for advice regarding a character's background.
First,
Second, one of my players is playing a fey-pact warlock (yes, 4th edition). I have been struggling with the motivation for a powerful fey creature to provide the arcane insight to a tiefling to allow such power and thought some of you bright folk might be able to help me come up with the fey's goals. Obviously, it wants something. I am leaning toward the Runelord Sorshen connection but haven't come up with anything specific. Can anyone out there think of something that an amoral fairy would want from the Material World?
Thanks for any and all help.

How about the fey forseeing that if the war between Korvosa and the Shoanti barbarians would destroy things that provide power to the fey court or things they care about. To prevent this the fey sought out something that they could influence that might prevent this outcome and so responded to the PC and subtly moved the PC to be someplace that would help prevent this war.

Interesting idea ... although I'm not sure what the potential target could be, given the number of battles already fought on this land. It would have to be something (or someone) relatively new.
I also haven't decided if I want the fey to be altruistic or primarily selfish.
Since the character in question is a tiefling, I had already decided to go with the idea that
So, I had thought I might make the ultimate fey goal something as ephemeral as "a royal kiss" (my wife informs me that fairies are always after kisses). The fey in question, having some secret knowledge regarding our hero, provides him with the power to make himself "royal." My only issues with this concept are:
1) What will happen when the PC kisses the fey?
2) Why doesn't the fey let the PC in on his lineage, ruining the drama of the situation?
Thoughts?

1) The fey has a connection to the royal bloodline of Korvosa, the most powerful (sorry, Magnimar) city in Varisia, and can influence events to its liking over the next few centuries.
2) It's fey. They don't *have* to have a reason to act strangely. They just do.

Or/and it could make him fall in love with her, announcing that she is to be his queen. She could choose to live away from the city and use that influence through the king or she could take to the title and set herself to reshaping Korvosa(which much of hte populace might not be thrilled with). She might not even be interested in the prestige of the title, it could just be a temporary fancy she's indulging in; it's all one big game to her, and the city and the power of royalty are playthings.
It really depends on the nature of that fey. Make her an urban type of fey and things get mixed up again.
2. Guess it goes back to the fey thing again. She could see it as a game, dropping hints here and there and teasing him with a truth that she knows and he doesn't, either out of genuine innocent playfulness or meanness. Hell, she could be playing him that way out of a sense of theatrics.
Then again, she might see it as something not necessary for him to know, so what's the point of bothering to tell him? The old "You didn't ask." bit.
What details about that fey have you set in stone so far?

Almost nothing has been set in stone thus far ... so far, the PC has only met her go-between: a sidhe by the name of Kathilios.
I like the idea of potentially setting herself up as queen of Korvosa in the future. I imagine her sending the PC on a very Alice-in-Wonderland-style quest which will make it seem that he has rescued her from the clutches of some evil menace (that she has, in fact, constructed herself). Kind of like Neil Gaiman's "Stardust," only with the Star in on the whole thing.

Possibly, (for the purposes of your game) the actual 'Curse of the Crimson Throne' where the sucession has been plagued by various mishaps (most recently the crimcumstances surrounding King Eodred II's demise) could be related to some sort of fey curse in reponse to something that one of the early rulers did.
Fey maneuverings to have someone tied to them on the throne could be the end result of a vengeance which has been slowly coming to the boil for decades.
If I recall correctly there have often been two (rival) fey courts featured in mythologies; maybe Ileosa could be the candidate (for whatever needs doing) of one court, and your PC the other.
Please be careful, if you are making one PC so important to events, that this is fine with the players of other characters, and have a plan for if the PC in question should for any reason leave the scene (death, crippling injury, inescapable imprisonment, etc, etc).

Some very interesting thoughts here ...
And I'm actually working on making ALL the PCs important to the various events; If all works out correctly, at the end of the campaign ...
one PC will be Blackjack
one PC will be king of Korvosa
one PC will be in charge of the Sable Company
one PC will be headmaster of the Academae
one PC will be Aroden reborn
one PC will be ? (still working on this one) [dragonborn paladin of Iomedae]
None of this is set in stone, of course, and it all depends on the players' choices, but this is where I see things heading.
