I'm a new Pathfinder looking for a group in the Macomb area. I will be at Michicon this Friday and Saturday for my first Pathfinder Society session as well as my first Pathfinder session. Old DD player and have taught my sons DD 4.0 but find it lacking and find my self missing the old days of DD.
Oh no! If you're playing Friday, that means you'll get stuck with the worst (and only) 5-star GM ever! Never fear though, on Saturday there's a 50% chance you'll get stuck with a good GM!
All kidding aside, welcome! I think Doug and I are the only one's running scenarios at MichiCon (I won't be there Friday). Doug is probably the best GM for new players as he's GM'd over 200 organized Pathfinder Society slots and understands the organized play rules better than anyone (even Josh).
Bit of advice for playing at Doug's table: Pay attention and you'll be just fine, and you might actually enjoy it. ;-) Otherwise, his enchanted dice will activate and you'll watch with horror as your brand new character is rent before your very eyes!
Have fun and see you there!

it's a D&D meetup group in K-Zoo, I don't know if they are going to play Pathfinder, but you could always ask!!
And if you're ever going to Grand Rapids, drop me a line.
The post is still valid. I'm coming to the next meetup on Aug. 27th.

Kyle,

If not how much notice do you need, as I would LOVE the help running running games?

Our home PFS gaming group is about to see some rough times as one of us is taking classes on Monday evenings that interfere with the only time the rest of us can all get together. While another player's work schedule is getting screwed with and she's been having to work Monday evenings for a while.
So, we're looking at expanding and starting to open it up as a public game at a local library. We're still in the discussion phase just now, but I was wondering if there was any interested players in and around Gratiot. We've been playing in Ithaca, but we're looking to start playing at Alma Library. If anyone is close and interested, let me know. We've been wanting to expand to a game store, but that moved further away, so we're hoping the library pans out, and we can get at least a few more players. We've got 2-3 GM's willing and able to run, we just need players.
Thanks.

What day are you looking at playing? I can probably get you 3-6 players if it's on a Saturday.

We've been playing on Monday. Sundays three of us play a non-pfs game, while Saturdays one can't play until sundown for religious reasons, and two others work evenings. Up until now Monday has been the only day that has worked for everyone.
Where are you from Mr. Pleasington?
Alma. Just down the road from the library actually. Saturday is the only day that all of us have off, so if you can get one going then please shoot me a line. We'd love to meet some fellow PFS players.

LFG in northern/central michigan. From saginaw to tawas. Can play weekends.
Off the top of my head, I believe there is/was a group in the Midland area. Which is in that "range" you provided. Also, due west of there in the Alma/Ithaca there are two groups.
Do you have anyone else that you play with, or is it just you? Have you considered trying to start up a group in your area, or somewhere in that range? If memory serves there is a game store in Midland as well, or maybe that was Bay City.

Ok stopped there today before work. Nice store that does run pathfinder society. They have not run one since September though. Did not have a lot of pathfinder books and no minis in boxes. Had individual minis though. Said mini boosters go fast so i just assume the books do as well. Will definitely stop there again. Will bring in some kobold quarterlys for him to look at. He seemed interested in it

If you other Michiganders weren't aware, we're starting to direct all session coordinators and in our region to Michiganpfs.org. The goal is to have one site for all of michigan to use as a reference for gaming instead of the dozen or so ways public games are used.
I would not count on Metro Detroit jumping in on this. I appreciate your ambitions to get the rest up Michigan up to speed as far as Pathfinder Society goes. We are doing fine with what we have over here.
You can throw a link to us athttp://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Pathfinder_Society_Southeast_Michigan/
on your page if you wish.

I have a different point of view on Detroit's status. From what I've been told about numbers of tables in 2011, and numbers of tables this year. There aren't as many being run, and less being run every month that passes. I can only find one group still running regularly (The Warriors). That tells me Detroit needs help. One of the reasons, I can personally citate due to my email and PM's being constantly pinged, is for people looking for games, but not knowing where to look.
Unless you know someone over there, who tells you about the yahoo group. You won't ever know it exists. That's not good, and is one of the reasons this site was built. 20 different groups using 20 different ways to generate interest in their tables is extremely inefficient. I can only see further use of that system as a detriment to PFS Statewide. The statewide website was used to great effect in Georgia (Mike Brock's original stomping grounds), and I look to emulate that success in Michigan.
So, here is what I ask. Help bring cohesion back to Detroit, and help Detroit be part of Michigan and not it's own little island. Let people know what tables are out there to be played. We've tailor built a website specifically for PFS and it's needs. To fight this, I can only see it as slowing down the growth of PFS in Michigan as a whole, and worst yet, specifically in the Detroit region.

The issue in Detroit has not been a lack of players. It is a lack of folks willing to organize a game day. That means finding a venue willing to host and finding enough judges. There is a fair amount of cat herding involved. I am aware of 5 different game days in metro Detroit. All can be found in the yahoo group I gave you before. A group with a current member total of 178. Obviously not all of these folks are active or even local. It is far from trivial to get that many people to move over to a new site without good reason. You have not offered a good reason.
My suggestion to you. Show up to our game days. Make the effort to find who is running them, and offer to run the special or some other thing. Or actually build play numbers in the part of the state that you DO represent before you try to horn in and claim our work as part of your success.

Let me offer a reason. It brings your entire regional community together. It lets players in Detroit know when something is happening in Kalamazoo. If someone wakes up on a Saturday and sees that everything being run in their area has already been played, they can look at other areas to see if there is something they can play. It lets players talk about regional issues and build a community.
As Daniel is currently the only person in Michigan who has stepped up to be a campaign volunteer he DOES represent all of Michigan to me at the current time, not just western Michigan as you elude to. If a game day or convention in Michigan wants product prize support or special Chronicle sheets, they have to go through Daniel.
Daniel has done exatly what I asked him to do. He helped to oversee a website was built to try to bring all your regions players together. I don't think he is trying to claim your work to build PFS, Doug Miles work, or anyone else. I think he is trying to build one, complete community of PFS players in Michigan to make it a much better success instead of staying with the status quo of several pockets of players that don't know what the other is doing.
When I became a VC in Atlanta, we had scattered groups using Facebook, MeetUp, personal website, and various other means of coordinating PFS. When I had Georgiapfs.org built, it brought all of those players together. We went from 2-3 public game day tables scheduled each month to more than 30. Players were able to find a game at a different location, go there and meet new gamers, expand their personal gamer base for home games, and find new people they could play with at conventions as well as game days.
You say there are 178 people on the list and there is not a good reason for them to move. Isn't cohesion of your entire Michigan playerbase, instead of Detroit just doing its own thing, a good enough reason? Isn't offering up more options of game days to your local playerbase a good thing and not a bad thing? Isn't having 400 people, compared to 178, working together to coordinate and grow PFS an awesome reason to consolidate all of your regional players into one place?

Ok, memory refreshed. You're officially the furthest north pathfinder I know of. As of currently I am not aware of any others near you, but take heart, that doesn't mean you're the only one. Just the first to wander across us on the internet. If you find anyone, or know anyone else around you. Direct them to here and MichiganPFS.org. We'll all do our best to get you playing.
Eric Clingenpeel Venture-Captain, Michigan—Mt. Pleasant |
Previously, I think the northern most PFS player I've known about is in Big Rapids. We're slowly spreading north. As the VCs have said, there's currently not much your way that we know of. All you need is three other players to make a legal table. That's how we started here in Ithaca and we've gotten 8 players the last two years. Now that I think of it, one of those 8 moved up to TC... Though he only played with us once...
I know there are Pathfinder players in the UP (Dot Games in SSM had way too much PF books for there not to be).

If anyone is in the Midland, Michigan area, I'll be starting up a monthly (to begin with at least) PFS game at Collector's Corner in Midland on Friday, January 18th at 7 pm. I would have started in December, but its a crazy busy month so we'll start after the new year (assuming the world doesn't end in December...)

In case anyone checking here isn't aware, this is what's going on in the Detroit Metro area. I'd love to see gamedays develop in Flint, Howell, Waterford and Mt. Clemmens/Clinton Twp. These areas are all under-served right now. The ground is fertile, it just needs a seed planted by someone.
