Starting equipment

Something that varies a lot from one group to another is what level of basic equipment the PCs are expected to have. This tends to be particularly significant at low levels.

Can we, for example, take the "other gear" carried by the iconics in Burnt Offerings and Edge of Anarchy as examples of what the PCs are expected to carry? Some notable absences from their gear which spring to mind are waterskin, bedroll and a change of clothes, plus they generally only have 3 or 4 days rations.

I'm coming at this primarily from a weight perspective -- waterskin (4) + bedroll (5) + change of clothes (5ish) + a week's rations (7) = 21 lbs, which is a lot for a low STR character, but which are things that characters might reasonably be expected to have in many games.

Relatedly, presumably the PCs can have equipment they don't carry with them during a given adventure?

Liberty's Edge

An excellent question my Chelaxian once countryman. And what of homes in which to store equipment not carried? And upkeep costs for those homes?

Speaking from experience with other "Living World" games. You are never going to stop and pull out a ration, drink from a waterskin, or visit your landlord to make rent as part of a scenario. I wouldn't lose too much time/weight etc about this level of detail. Certainly anything that goes on in this first year will be retroactively acceptable should major changes be introduced by Paizo at some later point where rations/rent become a factor.

Generally speaking (again from past experience with other living worlds) they will steer clear of the mundane stuff and we just get the cream at the top :)

I plan to avoid upkeep like the plague.

I want everyone to adventure like Indiana Jones, not like Better Homes and Gardens.

You should generally shoot for realism as your GM may get on you about not having rations etc. But don't worry about where your extra stuff is stored--you're a Pathfinder and you have access to many lodges around Golarion. Don't lose any sleep over it, though. :-)

Good to hear, given that clothes & jewelry account for more than half of my character's starting cash and a third of her light encumbrance.

5/5

The last thing in the world I want to spend time doing is calculating the encumbrance of every PC in our campaign. That's between you and your GM. :-)
