For Radavel

Spoiler:
The bird flying into the dining area before Tokie had quite had a chance to leave startled her, but not so much as to make an overt display or to be loud about the matter. Instead, she watched the small bird fly around, fascinated by the seemingly easy display of magic. She herself knew it was no small feat; but she loved watching the work of those more powerful than her. It made it seem effortless, and her own future as a shugenja very bright.

Once she responded to it by holding her hand out, she almost forgot herself once more at seeing the mark on the scroll. She could feel her face flush with pleasure and nervousness at being so personally addressed by one of the Elemental Masters. It seemed to be specifically an address by the Master of Fire themselves; her own chosen element. The concept of such filled her with joy.

Holding the scroll close, she wended her way out of the dining area and into the wide open spaces outside the inn. The beauty of the city was lost on her as she found a bench or seat to settle herself on, immediately out of the flow and bustle of traffic. Once there, she split the scroll open, her eyes scanning the contents quickly.

Dark Archive

For Hida Nagatsuna

Spoiler:
The walk from the hill was exhilarating. There is nothing like physical exertion to clear the head. Hida Tarugo, the delegation head, is a strict practitioner of the Crab duelling traditions. That is he drinks a lot of sake and he insists that you and Hiruma Denbei, the other Crab contestant, should likewise exhibit the same dedication. You recall the late night drinking bout and knew that were it for your leader’s long experience you would have gotten the better of him.

You snap out of your revelry and consider the Crane building before you. There is a dainty, almost effeminate quality to them. They are nothing like the buildings back home. Then you notice a sake house. Its sign has long faded and the rest of the building ill-maintained. Then you hear familiar angry voice. ”I’ll have you know I am a great hero!” It’s Tarugo-dono!

For Mirumoto Hanzo

Spoiler:
You walk the clean streets of Tsuma. Here and there you see results of over a thousand years of tradition. Commoners bow and wait for you to pass. While, eta kiss the dirt in your presence. You wonder how Mirumoto Rosanjin, your delegation head, take in all this.

Your wandering have taken you to a row of sake houses and there at a far end you notice the hulking form of Hida Nagatsuna. A loud voice can be heard screaming from an ill-aspected sake house, ”I’ll have you know I am a great hero!”
Defense Roll noted by the way.

For Matsu Ume

Spoiler:
The sounds of violence in the other room stopped though the sobbing can still be heard. You hear a panel slide back. Then a voice outside your room can be heard, “Domo-arigato, I am Otomo Gunbei. May I speak with you?”

For Bayushi Tatsuya and Moshi Tirishu

Spoiler:
Benten’s shrine is full of petitioners ranging from the very young to the very old. Then you notice a very beautiful lady wearing the colors of the Crane. She and her ladies-in-waiting move through the crowd gracefully. She is like a ray of sunshine, blindingly painful.

You wonder who she could be.

For Isawa Tokei

Spoiler:
You read the clear and precise words of Isawa Hochiu. Without much preamble he exhorts you to not only do your best but win the Topaz Championship. He claims that there have been precedents in the past where a shugenja won the Topaz Championship. Hence, you should emulate their achievements.

“Give everything for the Phoenix.” After reading the missive, the words catch fire and disappear without burning the paper. You look up and notice that the chrysanthemum trees are almost in bloom. Perhaps, tomorrow.

For Daidoji Yasuo

Spoiler:
You recall one of your many training sessions in the Academy. You can hear clearly in your head the voice of Kakita Noritoshi as he explains that, “The secret of Kakita’s technique is not simply the speed of one’s blade, as many believe. Nor is it merely the precision of your strike. Kakita’s ultimate lesson is one of subtlety. Without subtlety, no amount of speed and precision can make you a master of the Kakita style.”

Then your revelry is shattered by a rather loud and impolite ”Stop!” It is a female voice and it came from one of the rooms.

Radavel-sama

Spoiler:
Noticing the contruction of the buildings he snorts in derision and thinks, everything these people do shows the weakness in thier hearts. Effeminate? No! The crab women would be insulted at such useless structures.

Struck out of his inner reverie by the sudden commotion, Who is foolish enough to anger Tarugo-dono? Whoever got between him and his sake will pay a heavy price. Nagatsuna enters the structure to not so much help his fellow crab but to witness the regret in the eyes of whomever is the target of Tarugo's ire.

Dark Archive

For Hida Nagatsuna

Spoiler:
Make an Perception/Awareness Check. You enter the sake house and the stench of the place rivals the Shadowlands. No wonder Tarugo-sama feels at home. You see him having a drinking bout with three ronins.

Radavel-sama:

Spoiler:
Perception/Awarness roll (2d10.extra(10)=8) Having not played this system before I am not sure I am doing the rolls right. If I understand correctly, that was a roll of 2d10 (my perception rank) which I keep 2 of (my awarness rank). Is that correct? Or am I simply just rolling perception or awarness, whichever is higher rank?

Dark Archive

For Hida Nagatsuna

Dark Archive

For Hida Nagatsuna

Spoiler:

Radavel-sama:

Spoiler:
His deep voice rumbles through the room, "I did not think I would get a chance to redeem my honor so soon." Seeing as he has no commitments until the next day he sits and prepares to defeat these whelps along with Tarugo.

Heh, making me regret dropping my Earth back down to a 2 for all these skills ;p

For Hida Nagatsuna

female Akodo Bushi 1 - Insight 123

GM:

Spoiler:
Otomo? An imperial visitor? Ume nearly would have jumped up, and lost all decorum. She managed to contain her feelings for the moment, though. Quickly checked if everything was as it should in regards to her clothes and appearance, and answered. "I would be very glad to receive you, Otomo-Sama"

Dark Archive

For Matsu Ume

Spoiler:
Your imperial visitor appears disheveled. Having introduced himself, the man then asks for your name.
After getting an answer, he then proceeds to plead for your pardon, "I crave your pardon for disturbing your peace." He then bows low, lower than one to which you are entitled to.

Radavel-sama:

Spoiler:
Earth roll vs. TN 8 (2d10.extra(10)=11) "HA! of course they did. What would be the point of a tournament without the Crab?! To determine the best child? No! We make this tournament about men!"

Dark Archive

For Hida Nagatsuna

Spoiler:
"That is true." Replies Tarugo-dono.

One of the ronins excuses himself from the table.

"You lose your stakes!" shout the other ronins.

Then the cup again makes another round.

Raw Earth Roll vs. TN 9

female Akodo Bushi 1 - Insight 123

GM :

Spoiler:
Matsu Ume matched his bow quite neatly, not wishing to leave a bad impression. "If there was any disruption, i scarcely noticed it, Otomo-Sama." Awareness + Etiquette: 18

The fact that someone as highly-placed as him made sure she wasn't going to take offense either spoke very highly or very lowly of him. Either he was truly and sincerely polite, or he was insecure and felt the need to make sure noone even though of taking offense.

Dark Archive

For Matsu Ume

Spoiler:
Your response causes the man to relax. "Domo arigato goseimas for your discretion." The man then exits your room. The sobbing can still be heard from the other room.

Radavel-sama:

Spoiler:
Earth roll vs. TN 9 (2d10.extra(10)=4) Ah, knew my luck would eventually run out. Can I effect this with void? Hmmm, the room was spinning a bit

Dark Archive

For future reference, Void Point use should be announced prior to the roll.

For Hida Nagatsuna

Spoiler:
Considering that this is the first time, you may re-roll with Void this one time.

It's 2:44 PM where I am. What time is it where you are?

female Akodo Bushi 1 - Insight 123

GM:

Spoiler:
Ume smiled, and waited until the man was good and gone. His apology had roused her interest a bit more deeply than before... and maybe, just maybe, this was going to be more interesting than she expected.

Help me a bit. Now that the Otomo is gone, how rude would it be to politely ask if the person inside needs any assistance? Could this be phrased correctly, or is it right out?

It's 8:50 AM here

Dark Archive

For Matsu Ume

Spoiler:
The man, presumably the husband, having already asked for your apology, it would be extremely rude to intrude upon their affairs, unless the woman first asks for help. An inquiry you cannot initiate unless you are willing to violate convention.

You hear the voice of the Otomo and you hear him order the woman to keep silent.

female Akodo Bushi 1 - Insight 123

GM:

Spoiler:
Ah, ok. I thought he has left the living quarters altogether, and she was still inconsolable. If he has gone back to his quarters, then nevermind.

Why couldn't the man's apology quieten her down entirely? Maybe because of her mother's family, and their predisposition towards action on the basis of urge, instead of tactical thinking. But there was nothing to be done, the matter was closed.

Maybe some reading would take her mind off things, until her kinsmen returned. That, and it provided a convenient reason for her staying in her room. So she took the excerpts from "Victory" she had been studying, and opened it up where she had left the thin silken marker.

Radavel and Tatsuya:

Spoiler:
Tirishu stares at the woman, a little dumbfonded, untill his sense of propriety reasserts itself and he lowers his eyes again. He glances at his companion, whispering, "Fortunes, she's beautiful... Do you have any idea who she is? Do you suppose the monks know?"

Not waiting for an answer, he approaches one of the monks, bowing low, and says, "Forgive me, monk-sama, but if you please - who is that woman of the Crane Clan? Surely she must be blessed by Benten himself to be so beautiful!"

Spending Void point:
Awareness/Etiquette (4k3=27)

Dark Archive

For Tatsuya and Tirishu

Spoiler:
The monk rubs his eyes, "Oh, her. I see you have a keen eye for beauty. She is the Lady Doji Sakura, youngest daughter of the provincial governor. I pray that she meets a man worthy of her. I hear her father is looking for a suitable suitor."

Radavel

Spoiler:
Looking up at the trees blossoms, she thought upon the words of the master. She could hear them in her mind as if they were being spoken to her. Everything around her seemed to fade away as she started a silent prayer, only hoping she was up to the task set before her.

'Which task, Kie?' The other thought and voice intruded upon her prayer and she looked around, startled. It was only her imagination that had put that voice into her mind though and she sighed, starting yet another prayer, but this one for a nice, quiet day without...interuption.

She brushed her hands off rather unnecessarily, a nervous move on her part. Without looking around, she started off on her walk again, once more wondering where the other Phoenix were.

'Surely I wasn't the only one sent? It can't have been, there must be other representatives of the clan...'

For Radavel

Spoiler:

Daidoji Yasuo tucked the note into his kimono as he heard the rather loud and impolite noise. It was a woman's voice and her volume had invited investigation. Daidoji Yasuo left his room and strolled towards the direction in which the apparent ruckus had come from.

It has currently turned 9:51 AM where I am located.

For Radavel:

Spoiler:
Hanzo hears the bellow, and, curiosity piqued, enters the sake house.

No worries, I had read about void and knew that's how they were meant to be used. Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss something about them, being this was my first time. So I'll take my lumps. No reroll. FYI-it was 12:44 here (mountain time) and I went to bed :)

For Radavel and Nagatsuna:

Spoiler:
Hanzo's eyebrow rises almost imperceptibly more as the Crab slumps to the floor. Hanzo then approaches the table, and bows to the ronin seated there.

"Konichiwa, honored ones. I see that our friend here has warmed his belly sufficiently. If one of you could assist me in getting him to his feet, I think I may be able to return him to our inn."

Spending a Void point on the Awareness/Etiquette roll to gain their assistance.

Awareness/Etiquette=21

Nagatsuna-kun is sleeping off the sake.

For Radavel:

Spoiler:
Hanzo bows graciously. "I am Mirumoto Hanzo of the Dragon Clan, and most honored to make your acquaintance, Hida-sama. Our friend must have been fatigued, and perhaps should sleep. May I join you until he wakes?"

Dark Archive

To fully earn Tarugo's trust and respect you must succeed in the following rolls:
Raw Earth Roll vs. TN 6, TN 7, TN, 8, TN 9 and TN 10

Signing off for the evening.

For Radavel:

Spoiler:
Hanzo stares a moment at the cup of sake. He is young and unused to alcohol. But this is something new to experience, so he bows his head and accepts the cup.

"I do not know if a Dragon will be the equal of a Crab in such a contest, Hida-sama, but I do not fear to try."

With that, Hanzo drinks.

Raw Earth rolls for drinking sake=7, 23, 3, 8, 11)

Hanzo has troubles after his third cup.

Radavel

Spoiler:
Tokie will seek out the two of them then, looking for the 'company' of her clansmen.

Radavel and Tirishu

Spoiler:

As Tatsuya noticed the woman his eyes narrowed a bit in thought. She was truly beautiful and he had to wonder if she was a native to this village or just another representative. However he kept his focus off of her directly and more in the general area she was in so that he couldn't be accused of staring at her.

When Tirishu spoke to him his gaze snapped to the Mantis. "No, I've never seen her before. I haven't spent enough time in the courts for that to help me. If she lives here they might..." It was only after a few more words he realized he was talking more or less to himself, Tirishu having gone over to the monks. Chuckling softly Tatsuya followed him over to them and gave the monk a low bow. "If not blessed by Benten, the blood of Doji runs strong in her family."

When he heard the monks words he turned to Tirishu and gave him a slight grin before leaning in to speak. "Perhaps some close ties to the Mantis clan are in order for a certain Crane." Pulling back he winked at Tirishu looking clearly amused.

Radavel and Tatsuya:

Spoiler:
Tirishu blinks in shock. "What? Me? Her? No, no, no, that's... I mean, she's clearly... and I'm not even..." He catches his breath for a moment, then visibly composes himself. "No, Bayushi-san, you are clearly teasing me. I have no doubt that a woman so much in Benten's favor is clearly destined for a samurai of rank and nobility. I would not dream of setting my sights so high." For a moment, a faraway expression appears on Tirishu's face, but it is gone almost at once. With a bow that might contain just a hint of mockery, he adds, "You do me great honor to suggest that it might be, however." As he straightens, he offers Tatsuya a small grin.

Before the two leave the shrine, though, Tirishu takes a moment to light some incense and offer a prayer, and who can say whose face he sees as he prays?

Rising, he rejoins Tatsuya, and they move back out into the street.

Radavel

Spoiler:

Daidoji doesn't pull any conclusions from the appearence of the disheveled man from the room of the lion. Though he tries to judge if the "Stop!" had come from there and the Lion had to teach the gentleman a lesson. He waited a moment before stepping into the hall and strolling in the direction from which the loudly noise had come from.

Radavel and Tirishu

Spoiler:

Tatsuya chuckled softly and nodded his head a bit to Tirishu. "A bit of levity to keep the mood light never hurts." He said no more, praying nearby to him and lighting incense to the woman who clouded his thoughts. However when they got back outside he looked to Tirishu with a small smile.

"To be honest it was not just teasing my friend. I believe firmly that a Samurai should hope for the world. Hope is a very powerful part of our lives. Even if something is to never come true the mere ope that it might is usually enough to keep us going. Hope that we survive a battle or at least die gloriously, hope that someone who we... admire can be ours someday, hope to attain rank and station and so on. Contentment with what you have is all well and good but it never hurts to wish things get better."

Shrugging a bit he looked around the city. "Hope is a very strong weapon. Say for example someone was to hope that by winning the Topaz Championship their lot in life might improve or someone who they wished to train under might take note of them... These are very much the people to watch for." He continued to walk with Tirishu as they spoke, looking around the city and wondering just what exactly lay in store at this tournament.

Radavel and Tatsuya:

Spoiler:
Listening to the Scorpion's speech, Tirishu gets a look of undisguised surprise on his face. After Tatsuya finishes, Tirishu pauses a moment before saying simply, "Well said, Tatsuya-san." He then lapses into a thoughtful silence as they walk on.

Where to next? Is it lunchtime yet?
