Isawa Tokie was raised to believe in her family, the Kami, her clan and to understand that her place was below all of them and in service to them. It is a lesson she has learned well and one that she cleaves to in her day to day life to give her focus and strength of will.
Coming from a small family, she herself is the youngest member; both her parents married when they were much older and she is the only fruit of their union. She has only older cousins, most of them well advanced in years and well past the age of starting families of their own. As such, a great deal of responsibility is placed upon her to carry the family's name to greatness and honor.
As a young girl she and her family were delighted when she was allowed to begin training as a Shugenja. She showed an affinity to the elements very quickly; it was whispered that the Kami favored her. In order to facilitate her training, her mentor Isawa Kujojin decided on a different approach with her: Isolate her from her family and let her focus on her studies. It worked and she took to her training with a methodical and clever approach. Tokie made sure to study and practice her lessons so that she knew them well, allowing her to push them to the side and rely on her instincts when appropriate.
Her studies having gone so well so far, Tokie is confident and hopeful that she will soon be able to prove herself further, bringing her parents back some of the glory and honor that faded away from them. She also hopes to remind the Phoenix that her family still has a place among them and not to look them over like many dozens of other small families.
Deep in her heart, Tokie truly wishes to see her family well placed again within the clan and within the Isawa, but she also hopes to discharge any debts that they have incurred. However she must go about it, she does not wish to see her family fade into obscurity.
