About Isawa Tokie

Age: 15
Clan: Phoenix
School: Isawa Shugenja
Rank:1
Insight:138

Appearence
Isawa Tokie prides herself on appearing to be the self possesed, confident shugenja that will bring her family honor. She always makes certain that she is neat and presentable, keeping her long hair braided and pinned away from her face in a practical and neat fashion. Her nails are likewise always tended to fastidiously, kept long as well and groomed in the manner of one who does little to no physical labor. She wears very little in the way of jewelry but has a metal pin with a brightly colored and riboned Phoenix on it that she always wears on her collar, the one piece of frivolity that she always allows herself. She proudly wears her clan colors at all times, varying between robes of red, yellow and orange depending on her own personal mood. She is of medium height but very slight build, appearing almost waifish at times in her robes. Her features are very striking, standing out in her face.

Background

Spoiler:
Isawa Tokie was raised to believe in her family, the Kami, her clan and to understand that her place was below all of them and in service to them. It is a lesson she has learned well and one that she cleaves to in her day to day life to give her focus and strength of will.

Coming from a small family, she herself is the youngest member; both her parents married when they were much older and she is the only fruit of their union. She has only older cousins, most of them well advanced in years and well past the age of starting families of their own. As such, a great deal of responsibility is placed upon her to carry the family's name to greatness and honor.

As a young girl she and her family were delighted when she was allowed to begin training as a Shugenja. She showed an affinity to the elements very quickly; it was whispered that the Kami favored her. In order to facilitate her training, her mentor Isawa Kujojin decided on a different approach with her: Isolate her from her family and let her focus on her studies. It worked and she took to her training with a methodical and clever approach. Tokie made sure to study and practice her lessons so that she knew them well, allowing her to push them to the side and rely on her instincts when appropriate.

Her studies having gone so well so far, Tokie is confident and hopeful that she will soon be able to prove herself further, bringing her parents back some of the glory and honor that faded away from them. She also hopes to remind the Phoenix that her family still has a place among them and not to look them over like many dozens of other small families.

Deep in her heart, Tokie truly wishes to see her family well placed again within the clan and within the Isawa, but she also hopes to discharge any debts that they have incurred. However she must go about it, she does not wish to see her family fade into obscurity.

Obligation (4)
-- Isawa Hatsuyo was a Crab bride, cherished and loved by her family and allowed to marry into the Isawa as an alliance between families. When she was 'accidently' murdered by a Crane seeking to humiliate Hatsuyo's father, the Crab blamed the Isawa and Shiba for the loss. Because she was only in the presence of her husband, a powerful shugenja, the Isawa assumed the entirety of the blame for the incident. The Crab demanded reparations. The Isawa family that Hatsuyo married into would be responsible for routing out her murderer and seeing him punished. The family is well aware of who this murderous and deceitful Crane is, but has been unable to see him dead or humiliated. Tokei is the last of her family directly related to the man married to Hatsuyo and still young enough to do something about the slight to the Crab. The Crane is still alive and well but grows old; if something is not done to him soon he will die without the Crab being vindicated. It is Tokei's responsibility to ensure that in her youth she is able to discharge the family debt.
