Can soeone explain to me why it is that Tsuruchi Bounty Hunters still don't get katana? It was "cute" back in the Clan War, but now it's just annoying...

Ok, I have now determined that I no longer have the original L5R rulebooks (they were 1st ed. anyway) but only the Rokugun knockoff d20 book. So unless someone can give me an idea on where to find the rules or how to make a character than I don't think I'll be able to join you. I was trying for a Crab clan samurai, berzerker, or somesuch....

You have your starting equipment. You guys receive your daisho upon successful completion of your gempukku during an elaborate ceremony where you are proclaimed worthy to bear the title "samurai". For the meantime, you each carry a bokken or in case of the Crab a tetsubo.

Technique: Fury of Hida
Whenever you engage in combat, you may enter an enraged state as a Simple Action. While enraged, you ignore wound penalties for a number of rounds equal to your Earth Ring x 3, plus 1 round per School Rank. You may still suffer Wound points, but you suffer no penalties because of them. Further, you may roll and keep a number of extra dice equal to your School Rank when rolling attack and damage. All damage rolls made against you receive a +2 bonus to the total.
When you are not in an enraged state, you gain a bonus to your TN to Be Hit equal to your Fire Ring plus your School Rank. At any time, you may come out of your enraged state by making a Raw Willpower Roll against a TN of 20. If you succeed in calming your rage, you lose all bonuses and penalties granted by this technique while in the enraged state. If you calm your rage within 100’ of an enemy, you may not reenter the enraged state for the rest of the day.

Having looked over the Akodo War College, i love the concept, but the abilities seem a little, how to say... "poopy" in a small PC group. So it is probably easiest not to open that can of worms, and instead go with Akodo Bushi. She probably would have tried to get in, but was probably not accepted.

It's even worse with this particular scenario, since almost all of the official events of a Topaz Championship are solo, tournament-style contests. We're far more likely to be competing against one another than working together for the "main events"...
I am going to play a Kakita Crane using the typical Kakita Bushi school. I will begin working up a character fairly soon.
I do not know how different 3rd ed L5R is as against 1st ed L5R but I do recall that ancestor advantages previously available in 1st ed are no longer available in 3rd ed.
I was making my character and gave him a point in what they call a Heritage Table (from The Way of the Crab) but realized afterwards that this may be the Ancestor Advantages that you mentioned earlier. Got a decent roll too :(
Am I still required to take Death Trance as an advantage for the Berserker? Says so here in The Way of the Crab but not in that write up you gave me.
Ah, I put a point in it mostly to get a better handle on my character concept and give him a little random interest. I rolled 7 (Distinguished Past) and then a 1 (Venerable Blood). Seemed pretty decent but I have no real clue. I am cool with you doing the rolls too, whatever works.
Oh, got another question. If I am reading this right the skills from our school all start at Rank 1 and then you buy them up from there?
Can I make the skill Kenjutsu a specialty skill in Katana or do I have to leave it as the general skill for the school?
Whats the cost for Crab Hands in 3rd ed.? I have two different cost listed in Players Guide and The Way of the Crab.
Character background written up now. I also saw a mention of dojo - I picked one for him, but I haven't done anything with the actual mechanical benefit until I confirm that we are, in fact, using them.
Pretty close to done, here, I think. Anything else I need?

Hida-san, under 3rd ed. kenjutsu is the general skill while katana can become the emphasis. Please wait for a more detailed discussion later as I do not have the books with me in the office.
Schools skills are considered at rank 1, as a rule, then you buy up skills and ranks up to a maximum of two ranks from its previous level. For example, you have defense as a school skill you can raise it from 1 to 3. On the other hand, if you have taken a non-school skill like say sincerity then you can raise it only up to 2 since it would start from zero.
Crab hands cost, please wait for that. If anyone has his book out, please feel free to answer the question: what is the cost of Crab Hands?
BTW, rolls on the Heritage tables are free for the first time. But you can buy two more rolls for 1 point each.
Moshi-san, just wait for your free heritage roll, unless you wanna buy one or two more.
Terranova pointed me this way and I've been reading the thread, sounds like fun. I'd be interested in taking up the Scorpion clan slot if that hasn't already been fulfilled. I don't think it has but it's possible that I missed it.
Oh and according to the 3ed edition corebook Crab Hands costs 8 points. I don't have any of the other optional stuff for 3rd though so if it was changed or something I dunno.
So yeah....I hopped onto the Terranova train and decided to post interest, if that's ok. I would be interested in playing a Phoenix Shugenja.
Oh, and Misfit says that the Crab hand ability is 6 points for Crab's to purchase, not 8.

Off-topic, anyone here read Lone Wolf and Cub?
I had the full series, but had to part with it in one of my all-too-many moves. Neat manga. I also enjoy Blade of the Immortal.
I'm a huge fan of Shintaro Katsu - I have 20 of the Zatoichi films on VHS (I'll pick up the DVDs sometime). And I think it's high time I watched Chushingura again - the BEST version of the 47 Ronin story on film.
