Holy crap. I just realized I haven't visited the messageboards for 7 months. How time flies when your boss is screwing you over!!
I need some help from the best gamers in the world.... I'm prepping my first campaign as a DM and I wanted to use some music/sound.
First: One sound I'm having trouble finding is a "haunting female voice singing." Something like Enya, but just the voice. I'd use Enya, but can't find anything a capella. Any suggestions?
Second: Any suggestions about a freeware/shareware audio editor that could (a) allow me to strip the instrumental from a vocal? and (b) allow me to play/record a song in reverse?
Third: A good source for sound effects?
Any help would be appreciated.

Odd. This post is not appearing on the main thread list under "Music and Audio."
Very strange.

I guess I know where to find the sound of Silence.
ROFL. I KNEW someone could help.
After pondering this, I think I know what happened. On the days I originally posted, the stream of posting was more like a firehose, and the topics vanished off the "recently posted" radar fairly quickly.
So I will wring out my hanky and wait a bit longer.

This might be a little late, but...
A haunting female voice... Hmm. How about this?
You're right, it is tough finding a female vocal with no background music. :/

A good free editor is Audacity. It works on multiple platforms.
I'd just google sound effects.

I like it here because people will jump in to help if someone has a question.
Oh, and I like lilith's cookies too.
ditto on the cookies and help. As to smarts, well; IQ, yup, Education, not so much. I lack muck that others take for granted, basic Com Pewter knowledge for example.
But on the plus side, I have a 5ft range increment on thrown kegs!Skeld |
Third: A good source for sound effects?
Something I've been experimenting with lately: taking the sound effects and voice overs from the Neverwinter Nights games. They've got some pretty good "ambient" sounds (waves lapping against a ship's hull for example) that I've found handy.

Thanks for all the tips--Keep 'em coming!
I.Malachi, thanks for the suggestion to Audacity. Wow! what a piece of software. Still haven't managed to strip the instrumentals yet, but I'm still looking. I finally took a 3-minute piece of an Enya song with minimal instrumental intrusion, reversed it, and slowed it down.
Voila!
The thing is enough to give you nightmares!
Still having trouble with sound effects, but I hadn't even thought of NWN ambients. Thanks Skeld!

Maybe I can suggest the songs of Trio Mediaeval, three women singing a capella.
Not haunting at all, but with Audacity you could make it be, I suppose.
