Yes, thanks for that. My mandible sent me a postcard from sunny Pismo Beach.

MULE was my game of choice on the C64. That and Ultima IV. Oh yeah, Archon too. Um, Impossible Mission also.

I remember that one.
Mairkurion {tm} wrote:Such an awesome arcade game. How can the Jade work that into a future episode?Behold the glory.
Very cool. I have Dig Dug on some arcade games collection disk for Playstation and a bunch of others. Those collections are so worth it if you grew up with that stuff. Although, for some reason, the first Easter Egg I ever found, in Atari's ADVENTURE (a dragon slaying game), was stripped from the version appearing on the collection. You went into the red dragon's castle and grabbed a black pearl, then placed it on a border that made the border passable and you entered a secret room with a game credit.
** spoiler omitted **
The original WOW! I forgot about that one.

I ate slept and breathed Ultima IV, Lode Runner, and Bard's Tale 1 and 2 for the Apple II E. Dude, I was just thinking about Ultima IV yesterday while tooling around in Dragon Age for Playstation 3.

What is auto-tune?
Kinda like a vocoder or something...ever hear someone sing where their vocals sounds like a harmonized distortion? There were some singers on the Grammys the other night that were doing it ... although I can't remember a name for the life of me. R&B rappers tend to utilize it quite a bit. Perhaps someone more intimate with the genre can direct to a musical sample; it's not necessarily my niche.

Say Jade, can The Atomic Array get more Auto-Tune?
Hey, taig. I'm not sure what you're referring to. The only Auto-Tune I know is that vocoder effect for digital sound editing that allows you to take someone's voice and give it the pitch of any note on the keyboard... like Cher did in that "Do you believe in life after love" song. It was all the rage ten years ago and paved the way for people who couldn't sing at all getting a chance to create seemingly on key music in the studio.
If that's not it, please enlighten me. I'm always the last to know. ;)
Edit: Urizen beat me to it.

The Jade |

What is auto-tune? And why aren't all you AA fans rioting over at Uncle Woflie's house over this Open Design Podcast hiatus?
Hasn't everyone listened to the Ed Greenwood episode? The Tony di Terrlizi episode?
Those were two of my favorite interviews on that show as well, your M-inence.

Don't forget, it's picked up popularity lately, and is generally being used by people to mess with other audio, as is explained here.

Okay, enough auto-tune explanation. Back to the topic: Surely Taig is not the only one behind me here. Urizen is playing catch-up. What about everybody else?

That's it. I just figured since you're playing around with opening themes, you could jump on the current Auto-Tune obsession bandwagon. Ya know, for crossover appeal. :)
I forgot about it being around 10 years ago. I guess I didn't pay any attention.

Great video. Thanks, Davi.
I used auto-tune on an end phrase of a chorus just to get a (Rick Derringer's) rock and roll hootchie coo type discp feel going on a heavy rock song. I sometimes use pitch tools to raise or lower a voice for effect, but never for note correction.
There is nothing I sing on tape that I can't sing live. The way so many can't sing their own songs live these days withers me. I can understand the difference between a purely studio album for its own sake and live performance, but when many of the top groups can't perform live without massive back-up vox tracks or outright lip syncing, it starts to feel a little End of Days.

CrimJ, if you aren't getting into them, give those two I referenced a listen. Awesome stuff. And I hardly know beans about FR and I still feel in bromance with Greenwood.

If you and taig want Kazoos, YOU'RE GONNA GET YOU SOME KAZOOS BY JING!
And I actually do play the Jew's harp and harmonica to no great acclaim. Peter Frampton talks through his guitar and Sambora did it for Livin' on a Prayer or sumpin.

Huhhuhuhuh. The green guy has green wood for Greenwood. Huhuhuhuh...

I may have actually just barely skirted that joke during our Gen Con coverage on AA. I think Ed and I said something to that effect but then exed it for the final mix. Not that Ed would have minded, he's a naughty fella I tell ya.

Dueling banjos?
My friend is a monster banjo player (what would that template be called?). Despite my ability to fingerpick guitar decently, banjo playing and I didn't get along the first time I tried at age 18. Its plucking technique struck me as almost backwards to the way I approached guitar. On guitar you often arpeggiate by starting with the lowest note of a chord and then sounding each note higher. Banjo, or so I recall, had you sound the low note but then switch to the highest note and pluck your way back down at a blistering speed. I found it difficult to tell my hand to suddenly do what it was used to backwards. I could probably get it to work these days but I've yet to have someone request a banjo tune. Could happen, I guess. :)

You could accompany him on something a little more string-challenged friendly: the ukulele! Can you still do Peter Frampton on the ukulele?

The question is not can you do it but rather should you do it. Some things man was not meant to experiment with.

1. I'm going to need two bags of cheetos after hitting this!
2. Riiiiiiicoooooolllllaaaaaa!
